While listening to a talk on the rights movements in the 1960's this "poem" came up as an example of the extremism every such movement reaches with no lead, center or control before it ultimately burns out, as the Black Panther movement did. This would seem shocking today, but 50 years ago this was printed in news papers in the Oakland area.

These are the words of a world famous poet, even at the time who has gone on to receive many honors including the NAACP image award and had the dubious distinction of being a teacher for the Virginia Tech shooter, who although read her poems and interpreted them as written was chastised for failing to "read between the lines" which is double speak in an era of words are weapons.

“The True Import of Present Dialogue, Black vs. Negro” challenges black people to reject their middle-class complacency and adopt an angry revolutionary spirit in the quest for liberation of the black community. The title establishes the polarization of opposing attitudes among black people during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960’s—on one hand, “Black,” or those of a more revolutionary bent and, on the other hand, “Negro,” or those with a more bourgeois mentality. Here Giovanni insists that the revolutionary approach is the only one that will guarantee a meaningful future for black youth, who will be the beneficiaries of their efforts to liberate the black community from domination and possibly annihilation.
