I am 50/50 on that...geopolitically and domestically speaking. . . a drawdown is definitely a good idea.

IMO a new plan is long overdue.
There will be no tank war in europe.
We are free of middle east entanglements, as we have become energy independent.
Where can we not reach within hours?

Bring them home.

It makes sense - SHAPE is already there.

Yep, EUCOM and SOCOM-Eur to go to Belgium.

Cheers

But tanks are so pretty...
I do see Moscow if that dreaded invasion we are always preparing for happens (it won't) using large ground forces though. So it's good to have some personnel stationed there. I guess...
No one really wants to fight anymore.
Except maybe China.

I guess I don't have a problem with modern democratic Germany having their own nukes.

Any past debts from Germany have long been repaid, and they are a mature, modern nation state.

There is no reason they should not have tactical and even intermediate range nukes, for defense and deterrent, in the current world. Who knows? Most actual German citizens I have met (but not all) don't even WANT any nuclear weapons in Germany. Period. So, maybe it is time to take those weapons out, with the troops too in time completely, if needed or even just desired by anyone involved, IMHO.

I say bring them all home.

I agree.
Especially from europe.
Let the eu defend themselves.
We have paid enough of our tax dollars to subsidize their defense.

ROFL

Germany is a logistics hub for pretty much all US deployments in the Middle East.

The only things defended there are American interests.

If we lack overseas bases, then no we cannot deploy anywhere in the world in a matter of hours.
Luckily there's always new bases to replace older ones.

Hawaii
Diego Garcia
Puerto rico

We dont need bases to do what needs to be done anymore

The plan needs updated, dumping boots in europe is not the answer, or south korea as well.

Ground bases give the advantage of close support for live operations. Plus Strike groups themselves require sophisticated logistics networks. I don't suppose you recall how those networks maintain those supply lines?? Pretty sure it's a spider web of bases and partner facilities.

When we limit our bases we limit our force projection to a proximity of the nearest bases.

Poland, however, will suffice just fine as just such a replacement hub.

It has nothing to do with "europe". It has to do with using our resources wisely.

Yeah okay. So I misunderstood you, when you wrote

Why do we need to deploy US forces to other countries in this modern age? Maybe we wouldn't get involved in needless conflicts.

Seriously. If a Country wants us there, they should pay all the costs of maintaining our forces there.
