Yeah, I came to that realization a few years ago when for some reason I was struck by the sheer ludicrousness of it all. Those dystopian movies from the 80s like The Running Man, along with stuff like American Gladiators got it wrong because they couldn't imagine how much more bombastic it would be with their brilliantly colored high tech armor and flashing displays and intense drama on the sidelines, detailing the strategy, following injured players like a soap opera. And that's before considering the billions of dollars it generates because it's still something men will sit down and watch -- and bet on!

I can't watch it now that it's become so ridiculous to me.
