The original by Simon and Garfunkel was totally soulless. The whole debate of the Disturbed cover, too much bass, solo singer, no harmonising with another singer, total and utter BS.
The reason why it's far and above the better version than the original is the feeling, the emotion that aught to have been in the original. THAT'S why it brings people to tears.

Wow!!

This is exactly the reason i posted it here. It had me all emotional this morning.
You're spot on in what you say, well said.

A clear vision of the population subject to the technocrats and nano net minds.

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools, " said I, "You do not know
Silence, like a cancer, grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells, of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence

It really must be based on how our brains process sound uniquely as I find the Disturbed version soulless compared to the original.

Guess that goes for any music, artform, politics, pretty much everything once I think about it.

I remember listening to Sirius when they debuted this. I was skeptical. But they nailed it! I can’t decide which I like better the og or the cover.

Hey man i get it.
The original is an all time classic, Garfunkel's voice is amazing. But to me, it was always kinda watery. Light. Still a great tune.

But when i listened to the Disturbed version yesterday morning it moved me like the original never did.

Yes it could be how we process sound, but also how in touch one is with their emotions? Maybe. I love good music, if it stirs something within me even better.

Disturbed knocked the crap outta me yesterday
