Today in Florida just had the biggest spike in reported deaths since this began. Usually, there is a spike on Monday because reporting catches up from the weekend. I would say our average is in the high 30s to low 40s through the week but today's spike of 120 deaths is going to raise that. The previous record high in one day was 83.

Perhaps. But if one is aware of the effect it might make one less prone to fall victim.

The theory of cognitive dissonance proposes that people are averse to inconsistencies within their own minds. It offers one explanation for why people sometimes make an effort to adjust their thinking when their own thoughts, words, or behaviors seem to clash with each other.

www.psychologytoday.com...

In this case, someone is convinced that COVID is not a big deal and evidence which conflicts with that paradigm induces cognitive dissonance. The results in the mind producing "explanations" for why the evidence must be incorrect. It's not a conscious process. And the greater the dissonance, the more extreme the rationalization.

See above. The evidence is that the number of infections are rising. This conflicts with the paradigm so the mind reaches for an explanation, "the testing is wrong!" This gets more difficult as more and varied evidence accumulates. The next step becomes, "they didn't die because of COVID" , even though there is a clear correlation across all the data.

More infections = more hospitalizations = more deaths.

No use trying to argue with peoples political agendas.
Yup. It's got nothing to do with the truth, it's got to do with re electing Trump. Scary times when people think a politician is a God.

Remember 2017 when 959,000 were hospitalized for flu and 80,000 died?

Me neither

We're pretty far beyond both those numbers with COVID, and it hasn't been a year yet.

Your source:

Provisional death counts are weighted to account for incomplete data. However, data for the most recent week(s) are still likely to be incomplete.

Yes, the death rate was down for a while. It's now rising again. Along with new cases and hospitalizations. The three seem to go hand in hand.

The real number of covid deaths is close to that number if not below. How many thousands of people died "with" covid and not "from" covid but were still labeled as "covid" deaths? Like Dr. Birx said in April..."The intent is...if someone dies with COVID-19, we are counting that as a COVID-19 death."

live.healthday.com...

fox6now.com...

"“COVID was not listed on the death certificate as the cause of death,” Deavers said, the paper reported Wednesday. “I disagree with the state for listing it as a COVID death, and will be discussing it with them this week.”

News reports have identified the man as Sebastian Yellow, 35, and reported that he was found dead by police May 4.

The Montezuma County Public Health Department also was refusing to report Yellow’s death as a COVID-19 death. “The state is reporting that death as a COVID death, but our health department wanted to let people know that even though the person did have the virus, they did not die from it,” the agency said.

In response to a request for comment about Yellow’s death, the Colorado Department of Health told KCNC-TV that it classifies a death as confirmed when there is a positive SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) laboratory test.

Last month, the same agency reclassified three deaths at a Centennial nursing home as COVID-19 deaths, challenging the findings of attending physicians who ruled the deaths were unrelated to the virus..."

and then subtract the deaths from the nursing homes where covid positive patients were placed...

looks like about only 25% of hospitalizations from this source

ycharts.com...

or this one

AND...the flu data is from the flu season...November to march...so both data sets encompass about 5 months...

"Therefore, weighted counts of deaths may over- or underestimate the true number of deaths in a given jurisdiction."

"Summation (rather than estimation) was chosen to account for the possibility that some jurisdictions may have substantially incomplete data while other jurisdictions report may more deaths than expected, these negative and positive values will cancel each other out when estimating excess deaths for the US directly using the Farrington surveillance algorithms"

All I can see is this:

Influenza activity in the United States during the 2017–2018 season began to increase in November and remained at high levels for several weeks during January and February (6). While influenza A(H3N2) viruses predominated through February, and were predominant overall for the season, influenza B viruses were more commonly reported starting in March 2018. The season had high severity with unusually high levels of outpatient influenza-like illness, hospitalizations rates, and proportions of pneumonia and influenza-associated deaths.

But I suppose that COVID hospitalizations and deaths will come to an abrupt end now. But both numbers have exceeded the numbers for that "flu season."

"Therefore, weighted counts of deaths may over- or underestimate the true number of deaths in a given jurisdiction."

Yes. And with all that:

Provisional death counts are weighted to account for incomplete data. However, data for the most recent week(s) are still likely to be incomplete.
