She thought it was a private message, reportedly.

A Mississippi elections official became the subject of social media fury over the weekend when she tweeted that she was "concerned" about an increase in black voters.

"I'm concerned about voter registration in Mississippi," Gail Welch, an elections commissioner in Jones County, Mississippi wrote. "The blacks are having lots [of] events for voter registration. People in Mississippi have to get involved, too."

The Clarion Ledger reported that Ms Welch wrote the comment on Sunday on Facebook. The comment then went viral across social media.

Not a good look Ms Welch.

Ms Welch defended her statement claiming it had been intended to be private and that she wasn't trying to be racist, but rather encourage voter turnout.

"We've always in the past had whites really participating in registering to vote. So many people don't seem to be concerned about [voting]," Ms Welch said. "I was just trying to strike a match under people and get them to vote - to get everybody to vote. This was not intended to be anything."

Sounds like she's alarmed that blacks are turning out in such numbers that whites may not have a voice. Still? Mississippi? The reddest state in the deep South? I mean blacks are highly unlikely to make this state go blue anytime soon so it was stupid on her part to react at all, especially given the current atmosphere concerning race.

By the way, the 'people of Mississippi'? So blacks don't count in that definition? Not a good look.

Well, it’s Mississippi.

I don’t know what to say other than that.

That could have been worded better.

I just love it. Are people that afraid of minorities voting even in solidly red states like Mississippi? Makes no sense to me. Heck, I even scoff at the idea of Arizona or Texas going blue anytime soon. Rather not risk to complain about it if you're that racially inclined?

Do you think you could word a complaint made about black people registering to vote any better?

Now so? Do we take out the racial terms then? Despite the fact this is a racially charged comment?

Color me curious.

Well if you believe her explanation...Sure

I think she was attempting to say everyone should get out and vote.

That or maybe she’s just a racist idiot.

Good question, since he's the son of God, what color was God?

Complaining about blacks registering to vote? What more is there to explain? You don't see issue with this? From an elections official?

God is a spirit and spirits are white in the movies.

Politics. If she is a Conservative it would worry her, because there are more black Dems than black Repubs. No racism needed at all for her to make that comment. Just racist people interpreting it.

I wonder if she's Democrat or Republican. She probably meant what she said she meant. If blacks can have events to register voters, why aren't you whites doing the same thing. Part of her job is to get people to register to vote.

Personally, I'd like to know what "black" events are. Are whites excluded from these events?
