If this is indeed a true story.... wow! I had no idea.

Still wouldn't motivate me to tear it down but yes, I see how that's one hell of a bad mark. At very least, this information should be told with the history of the monument but taring it down is destroying history.

I believe if we tear down something that we hate from our past, we forget about it's history and the lessons we learn from being aware of it. The worst thing you can do is destroy that history and taking the greatest chance that we wont repeat it. If history is lost, we're doomed to repeat it. If we learn from it and it's in our face and we somehow don't change the true meaning of it... we may actually overcome.

edit on 30-6-2020 by StallionDuck because: apparently I don't know how to spell tear! lol

Tearing down statues is wrong. It's fine to have them. It's wrong to glorify them. That's what those statues are, glorification. So my suggestion would take a couple of bucks to solve. Any statue that people find offensive for whatever reason, rather than tearing it down erect a statue right next to it depicting the children they oppressed with a plaque describing the atrocities that were commuted.

I agree with you 100% on that. History is history and should be preserved, studied, and remembered.

But is this a different scenario? This isn’t just history for these people that still live and exist today. That look at it on a daily basis. For them this isn’t history, it’s the present.

I really don’t know the answer to this one, but it is a nice thought experiment.

If during WW2 Nazis had carved a giant swastika into St Peters dome in Rome. Would catholics around the world still have the desecration up on display today to remember history?

Would Muslim’s allow a giant Star of David to remain on the Kabaa to remember history?

I realize I just inadvertently compared Mt. Rushmore to a Swastika. This was not my intent but it is a step in understanding how the Sioux must see it.

When they blow this thing all to hell can I have Teddy R's pornstache? It puts Ron Jeremy's to shame.

After all...they were both 'Rough Riders'.

I stopped here. Fake news. What I did see on Twitter recently was Trump tweeting a video of very fine people chanting "white power".

That's the issue though isn't it? Historically it's common for cultures to build over or completely destroy structures/sites that are sacred, especially of their enemies.

The aim is to destroy the opposing culture. There's rare cases like the mosque-cathedral in Cordoba, where the conquerors spared a beautiful building or cultures that would adopt others beliefs and god's or even practiced religious freedom. These are certainly not the rule though.

MT Rushmore is a modern day representation of religious oppression. If you don't like the idea of sacred sites being disrespected, defaced or otherwise destroyed then realistically you shouldn't like the sculpture on that mountain. It's desecration.

Yet I fully understand the conundrum here, it's a catch 22. Either way you stand you're supporting the destruction of a site held dear to people.

I didn't know Native communities built Mt Rushmore.

They must want to start a war. The voice of that entire party is pure idiocy.

Were there any actual calls to destroy MT. Rushmore?

LOL, right behind the permit requests to tear down the Albert Pike statue in DC, or any of the other statues that were taken down by an angry mob under the cloak of darkness. These assholes don't want to follow rules and junk, they just want more temper tantrums.

They all need a good spanking and some nap time.

This is caused by the deterioration of the family unit. Thrice divorced bitter Mom has to work so she isn't there to make Hot Pockets for Junior in the basement when he does battle on the internet so resentment builds and an outlet is needed... or maybe Junior just needs a girlfriend?

That's the only place Junior and girlfriend can talk, via social media. When they get face to face, they just stare at each other and giggle.

I'm not worried about Mount Rushmore, but I have a feeling Stone Mountain might be up for a smashing if things continue.

The article starts with “Trump has disrespected Native communities time and again”

A lie.

Which is where i should have stopped reading.

The dEms have a playbook. It’s called ‘how to lose votes’. And they’re following it to the letter.

Interesting that something as simple as "South Dakota's Mount Rushmore Fireworks Celebration 2020" has caused such a ruckus.
Independence Day celebrations are in no way a new occurrence.

Well Trump is supposed to be there so it's really just their attempt to stifle his 1st Amendment rights. And they might as well tear something down while there. The childish level of minds these people have is unreal. I hope the National Guard is able to teach them a lesson.

I hope it simply goes on without incident.
Celebrations on Independence Day are a tradition in the usa.
Best way to spite them is to have a great party.

If a person can agree that tearing down a national monument is appropriate, then they would also fall in line in destroying the Constitution.

They are cultural Marxists, cowards, authoritarians.

They disgust me.

I'd spit on them but they aren't worth the phlegm.

I think they’re trying to lose the election.

Makes sense. I wouldn’t want to deal with the aftermath of the Peiking Pestilence either.

Ok as someone who use to vote for the democratic political cult then went independent 3rd party in 2016 and now is going vote for the Republican political cult in 2020 because it seems strategically the best thing to do from my perspective.

Calling a trump rally white supremacist is such a sensationalist line and it is beyond yellow journalism.

This is the sort of woke garbage that the democratic party and its media allies have hitched their wagon to that has made me politically homeless and made me leave the democrats.

The wokeness just got pushed to far for me and all the illogical nonsense that comes with it like calling a Trump Ralley a white supremacists gathering .

I may have issues with trump Im sure that even people who voted for him do but believing that he is a white supremacist is sheer lunacy but the scary thing I realize is that there are many people that absolutely believe this and they are stuck in a media echo chamber that keep reaffirming it.

unfortunately the new gen of far leftist have seemed to have lost all ability to think critically or look at facts I find it very alarming as well.
