One lazy afternoon long ago we took a detour
On a whim-- A lonely and unassuming exit
Unpaved, throwing up dust in a fine coat
And the sea of grass swallowed us up.

And all the cares tying us down to earth
Were at once loosed
And the wind and the sun became reflections
To remind us from whence we came
And of where we are going.

We took a drive down memory lane
And there our spirits soar still
Leaving behind the illusions and lies
Patched into a Frankenstein skin.

We took a trip down memory lane,
forgetting all that we knew,
Shedding identity, guilt, fear, and lies
And returned to the pavement with brand new eyes.

And thus were they baptized
in that sea of grass,
as witnessed
by Wind and Sun.

Note: That's my impression of your poem anyway.

I wasn't sure if I liked the word "pavement" there... then looked up the etymology and sure enough, it was perfect:

" from pavire "to beat, ram, tread down"

I love words

Returning to the pavement was key to re-assuring me that your poem wasn't about something more permanent.

It was a relief really.

Found this today and I made a few edits:

One lazy afternoon long ago we took a detour
On a whim-- A lonely and unassuming exit
Unpaved, throwing up dust in a fine coat
And the sea of grass swallowed us up.
And all the cares binding us to earth
Were at once let loose
The wind and the sun reflections
Of whence we came
And where we're headed.

We took a drive down memory lane
And there our spirits soar still
Leaving behind the illusions and lies
Patched into a harlequin skin.
We took a trip down memory lane,
forgetting all that we knew,
Shedding identity, guilt, fear, and lies
And returned to the pavement with sharpened eyes.
