Hello,

I would like to share with you the info we have so far about habitable exomoons:

1. We have detected 9 exomoon candidates, but none of them are potentially habitable.

2. A habitable exomoon would have a mass between 0.25 and 2 Earth masses.

3. The mass of the host planet has to be at least 3 times the mass of Jupiter, and it should not be tidally locked to the star.

4. A study has identified more than 70 gas giant exoplanets that could host habitable exomoons, but all of them are located far away.

5. Within 100 light years, there could be around 33 habitable exomoons orbiting Sun-like stars, 109 around K-type stars, and 121 in red dwarf star systems.

It's a nice fantasy, but unless there's a radical paradigm shift in the way we go to space - basically Chinese fireworks - potential human habitation of space will likely end at Titan.

It would be cool for an earth like moon to actually exist, it's weather pattern would likely be far more intense than the gentle seasons of the earth though.

But it is entirely possible such world's can and do exist and in rare instances perhaps they are even more suitable for life than the earth.

Remember though such moon's would not only have possible impacting object's attracted by there own gravity but also by the gravity of the planet that they orbit, they may also have complication's depending on how there magnetosphere work's and how it combines with that of the planet they orbit and other moon's in orbit of that world, this may make them a less likely candidate for life but it most certainly does not rule either them or moon planets that could possibly be converted into earth like world's out and they remain quite likely to exist somewhere in the universe.

No sorry have to disagree (you most certainly do have a point if we still have idiot's like our current global leadership or worse in charge of the show though and perhaps humanity has to grow up a bit first so in truth I share an equally jaded view of the future, I mean we were supposed to have flying car's, hydroponic farm's and no homeless or starvation but if you fix the world you end the income for a very select group of the elite as well as threaten the ultra elite's hold on power), if we get to inhabit our solar system as far as Titan we will likely have developed a far more advanced and mature space based economy mining asteroid's etc, this in turn will make it more and more likely that we will end up sending multi generation or sleeper - or genetic seed bank - ship's to explore the universe, we will also by that time have likely compiled far more evidence of likely habitable systems beyond our own.

Method's other than chemical rocket's do exist, solar sail is not impossible but is very fragile so how long and how far would it work, of course we could beam massive laser array's at such to accelerate them faster and further.
Magnetic acceleration not only for take off but space rail gun like launch facility's could in theory rapidly accelerate long duration craft which could then switch to either solar sails or other method's to accelerate there journey.

Yes I am classing such exotic technology's as Ion drives etc as just a variation on firework's, the same principle also applies to mass driver technology - imagine hollowing out a huge asteroid, building a city within it were people could live, grow crop's and live out there lives while nuclear engines vaporise material from the non inhabited parts of that asteroid to turn into plasma for thrust and accelerate the mini world to distant location's, couple it with hibernation technology which Nasa is actually researching and just maybe even firecrackers like this will one day reach those distant world's - perhaps as ark's of a civilization long since vanished or changed beyond all recognition, who knows someone may yet even develop a far faster method of journeying over vast distances (which they may very well already have done but it is not for us as far as a bunch of mentally retarded so called elite whom sit on power under various excuses but mostly just to keep it for themselves, have no moral's and would kill you if they felt you were a threat to there power are concerned - or just for economic reason's like Salters Duck was not put into power production in the UK because some pencil necked clerk thought that it would cause the closure of the coal mines - happened just a few short years later anyway under Thatcher - or pose a threat to the oil industry, a truly green technology that is more revolutionary, simple and efficient than those wind farm's which are nothing but eye sores).

Meanwhile, back here on earth, we are still trying to figure out how to get one person to our closest neighboring planet and back alive. One light year is a big enough barrier to keep humans off your pristine planet forever with current tech. Introduce cost barriers and the fact that humans don't like to die and it is highly unlikely humans will ever leave this solar system in any meaningful way.

A better idea then generation ships which could also work NOW at our teck we have .
At this point teh ONLY thing stopping humans from going to other stars is Humans .

If all Humans put every thing we have into a genaration ship in 20 years teh first ship could be leaving our solar system .
Go out to the asteroid belt Pick a nice asteroid say half a mile round as possible . Hollow build lvs fill with every thing humans need have extra resources for lose and in 100000 years humans will be at other stars .

We need to get up there and learn how to swim around our own star system before venturing on to others.

That's where Casimir drives and plasma engines will come into play.

As to how we manage to colonize and industrialize our low Earth orbit so we can get on with the rest.

I was always partial to the space elevator/tether notions, and whilst the material science is just about there or near about, the heavy industrialization required to mass-produce any sort of material for a cable/tether is probably beyond our ability to produce.

That could change all the same if we were ever to collectively get pour acts together and actually build something worthy of our skills before we stagnate on the vine neat the bottom of the gravity well. LoL

Such as NOT the sentiment of the first human's to sail over the ocean's to destinations they did not even know existed, such did not stop them from learning to sail those ocean's often in boat's that were literal death trap's BUT they did and they made it and humanity spread across this world.

Humanity can indeed reach the nearest planets it is not a technical problem so much as a costing problem, we have technology that is more than up to the match for this task now BUT it is hugely expensive and since the end of the shuttle development and parts production and with that most advanced of human piloted vehicles now out of service and before that the Saturn rocket program many of those technology's will literally have to be reinvented almost from scratch, most of the expert's that could have sent a man to mars have died of old age and it was not technology but government policy, cost cutting and pencil neck's quibbling over how they could blead off money into some black budget of classified project somewhere by hiding it under the umbrella of the space program so over inflating the real cost of the space program by at least more than two or three time's it's true expenditure.

Once again it is about cost - and politics but we can do it right now, we could even send UNMANNED vehicles to other star systems right now though there journey time would be in the ten's of thousands of years at the bare minimum so that would be pretty pointless, for interstellar travel to even our nearest neighbouring stars we need something with a bit more bang.

You know what though I am not a proponent of it we had that technology at least on the drawing board as far back as the 50's, nuclear powered rocket's, they are not REALLY rockets but use a truly huge vessel to contain literal nuclear bomb's being detonated and on top of that you put your space for living quarters or payload, it is not clean, it is extremely dangerous not least to people on the ground but the old Orion rocket would have worked.

This would still likely not get our astronaut's to another solar system in a human lifetime BUT the principle would cut the time of space travel between star systems from thousands to hundreds of years assuming you had enough nuclear bomb's to maintain a good long (and very shaky) acceleration and enough to slow down again - assuming we don't also go and irradiate any habitable planets in the process.


But My point is moot because you are correct as far as our nature as a species is concerned, we have small minded idiot's running the show in our government's, sceptic's in charge of our world when to get this off the ground you actually need believers, non of the great work's of the past would have existed had they ruled and indeed we would likely still be living in caves so let's dream a little shall we.

We already have a nice spot to set up camp. It's called Earth, with only about 25 percent of the surface explored. I know some people have the mentality of moving whenever a place accumulates too much garbage, but there's an alternative. Clean it up.

What do we do when we find our new dumping ground, we are humans we create a lot of waste and pollution, fine at first plenty of room to dilute all that thrash and smog. but where would that take us in the future, right back to where we are now, living in a dump heap, forget it, besides the speed of light is way too slow in space to get anywhere in reasonable human time with our pretty short lifespans..... its a no go, dead in the water just accept it... do our time on this planet and move to the next lever without the drag of carting around a body container.....

Oh my goodness! we need to find a way to get along together on this planet first and wait until everyone develops or evolves proper respect...before we go running off leaving a big mess behind us, (a very common human trait) let someone else clear the mess while we go and make another and soon find out when we get to our new planet that in time we again need yet another new planet and another and another until we have the whole universe looking like one giant trash can, the of course we can go to another galaxy and start to search for another planet, to mess up....thats humans for ya, way too much baggage..........forget it. its just not worth all the false hope and failure ahead.......reply to: Alfa015015

Even if we believe there are around 3 dozen planets we could live on, the first option we must look at is which is the closest, not the best but the closest, and that means it could be the worse of the 3 dozen available. course it could be the best too... Anyway good or bad how do we propose to reach it, if we believe the governments that they are not responsible for UFO's in our skies, and we can't travel at light speed either, then those bog standard rockets they use to launch all kinds of rubbish out into space are never going to set us on our journey to a futuristic oasis some 1000 light years from earth...we are all here and here is where we all stay for the foreseeable future, I doubt there is anyone on this planet at this very moment who will ever see images of any far off habitable planet we could populate with the dreaded human lifeform.... we should really look at things we can actually achieve here and now while we actually exist. yes we probably should do some long term stuff too, but it shouldn't take center stage...keep it ticking in the background and let it progress in silence until its feasible....
