I've enjoyed reading ATS for over a decade. I feel like I've gotten to know a lot of you through your posts. I've read every thread here that didn't appear political. I would actually get excited when I saw a new thread from a few of you.

What’s happening to ATS, and why?

I don't know why, but it looks like the owners feel it is time for them to move on. There was an official thread about it a few days ago.

a regular “.com” domain will usually cost you ~$10.
You’ll need to pay this ~$10 every year to maintain ownership.

Yes but to keep a site like this running requires significant money to keep it working properly - hosting which provides enough bandwith to cope with the number of visitors per day etc. The domain name to buy is cheap (in theory) but keeping it visible and functioning online may cost a lot of money if there are say 1 million visits a month etc. Also a site like this with a huge amount of content on it will cost much more to host than a 1 page website.
Then if anyone is paid to moderate/the time it takes to maintain the site etc etc.
No idea what that is in real terms but most likely thousands?
Trimming the site and closing unused forums could help.
Also the delisting from Google means less visitors and that in turn would mean less clicks/paid revenue from ads for the owners of the site, which I assume pays for the running costs of it rather than any actual salary. (could be wrong there?)
