The American Press Is Destroying Itself

********
There is already a thread in the mud pit (link) relating to this article. However the angle covered in that thread is a only a partisan interpretation of a small part of what is being discussed in this article.
********

In his article titled "The American Press Is Destroying Itself" Matt Taibbi, contributing editor at Rolling Stone, sounds the alarm that the American News industry is becoming paralyzed by internally driven fear to the point where they can no longer cover the news objectively. That the journalists we all rely on to keep us informed no longer feel comfortable delivering us the news and instead fear for their jobs and future employment.

At a quick glance the bulk of this article reads as if it was written by a conservative conspiracy theorist trying to make the claim that the "News Media is the Enemy of the People" ... which is what the other ATS thread is about regarding Liberals losing their minds. But this is not a correct interpretation of what Matt Taibbi has written. He is no friend to people who think Liberals are losing their minds or the current President nor the conservative movement.

Our president, Donald Trump, is a clown who makes a great reality-show villain but is uniquely toolless as the leader of a superpower nation. Watching him try to think through two society-imperiling crises is like waiting for a gerbil to solve Fermat’s theorem. Calls to “dominate” marchers and ad-libbed speculations about Floyd’s “great day” looking down from heaven at Trump’s crisis management and new unemployment numbers (“only” 21 million out of work!) were pure gasoline at a tinderbox moment. The man seems determined to talk us into civil war.

Taibbi makes it very clear what side of the partisan devide he comes down on; I am confident he doesn't think Liberals have lost their minds ... due to the simple fact that he is one himself. However this fact only serves to bolster the warning he is heralding in his article. His warning isn't coming from a conservative displeased with unflattering coverage of a Republican President. His warning is meant for all people; especially his own friends and colleagues with in the News Industry.

He starts his warning by declaring who the culprit is:

It feels liberating to say after years of tiptoeing around the fact, but the American left has lost its mind. It’s become a cowardly mob of upper-class social media addicts, Twitter Robespierres who move from discipline to discipline torching reputations and jobs with breathtaking casualness.

This is the extent of his musings on who he blames for the dark chapter in American Jerusalem. And yes its not kind to Liberals in general but it is hardly the reason he wrote this article.

The rest of the article is Taibbi warning how the current political climate is devastating the objectiveness of the news media and how journalists are living in fear of telling the truth.

The leaders of this new movement are replacing traditional liberal beliefs about tolerance, free inquiry, and even racial harmony with ideas so toxic and unattractive that they eschew debate, moving straight to shaming, threats, and intimidation.

Now, this madness is coming for journalism. Beginning on Friday, June 5th, a series of controversies rocked the media. By my count, at least eight news organizations dealt with internal uprisings (it was likely more). Most involved groups of reporters and staffers demanding the firing or reprimand of colleagues who’d made politically “problematic” editorial or social media decisions.

The next lengthy part of his article sights example after example of where journalists have been threatened with or punished with the loss of their jobs and livelihoods for stepping outside of the current narrative surrounding the protests occurring current in the United States. I won't quote them here; but encourage you to read the article.

He then relates how this attack on journalism is affecting the news we are presented. After telling the story of how Times editorial page editor James Bennet was fired for running an article written by Senator Tom Cotton, Taibbi says this:

As Cotton points out in the piece, he was advancing a view arguably held by a majority of the country. A Morning Consult poll showed 58% of Americans either strongly or somewhat supported the idea of “calling in the U.S. military to supplement city police forces.” That survey included 40% of self-described “liberals” and 37% of African-Americans. To declare a point of view held by that many people not only not worthy of discussion, but so toxic that publication of it without even necessarily agreeing requires dismissal, is a dramatic reversal for a newspaper that long cast itself as the national paper of record.

And what is the impact of this attack on American journalism? Taibbi tells us:

The main thing accomplished by removing those types of editorials from newspapers — apart from scaring the hell out of editors — is to shield readers from knowledge of what a major segment of American society is thinking.

It also guarantees that opinion writers and editors alike will shape views to avoid upsetting colleagues, which means that instead of hearing what our differences are and how we might address those issues, newspaper readers will instead be presented with page after page of people professing to agree with one another. That’s not agitation, that’s misinformation.

He also tells us this is not a new post Covid phenomenon:

The instinct to shield audiences from views or facts deemed politically uncomfortable has been in evidence since Trump became a national phenomenon. We saw it when reporters told audiences Hillary Clinton’s small crowds were a “wholly intentional” campaign decision. I listened to colleagues that summer of 2016 talk about ignoring poll results, or anecdotes about Hillary’s troubled campaign, on the grounds that doing otherwise might “help Trump” (or, worse, be perceived that way).

And Taibbi sees the situation worsening. He tells us that after Times editorial page editor James Bennet was fired:

His replacement, Kathleen Kingsbury, issued a staff directive essentially telling employees they now had a veto over anything that made them uncomfortable: “Anyone who sees any piece of Opinion journalism, headlines, social posts, photos—you name it—that gives you the slightest pause, please call or text me immediately.”

And what does Taibbi see as a result of all these attacks on the integrity of journalism?

All these episodes sent a signal to everyone in a business already shedding jobs at an extraordinary rate that failure to toe certain editorial lines can and will result in the loss of your job. Perhaps additionally, you could face a public shaming campaign in which you will be denounced as a racist and rendered unemployable...

These tensions led to amazing contradictions in coverage... We are seeing headlines previously imaginable only in The Onion, e.g., “27 police officers injured during largely peaceful anti-racism protests in London.”...

Each passing day sees more scenes that recall something closer to cult religion than politics... white protesters in Floyd’s Houston hometown kneeling and praying to black residents ... Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer kneeling while dressed in “African kente cloth scarves” ... There is symbolism here that goes beyond frustration with police or even with racism: these are orgiastic, quasi-religious, and most of all, deeply weird scenes, and the press is too paralyzed to wonder at it. In a business where the first job requirement was once the willingness to ask tough questions, we’ve become afraid to ask obvious ones...

The media in the last four years has devolved into a succession of moral manias. We are told the Most Important Thing Ever is happening for days or weeks at a time, until subjects are abruptly dropped and forgotten, but the tone of warlike emergency remains...

It’s been learned in these episodes we may freely misreport reality, so long as the political goal is righteous...

And the bottom line for Taibbi is that journalism, once a proud, tough and honest profession, is turning into a shameful, fearful, and dishonest one.

For all our infamous failings, journalists once had some toughness to them. We were supposed to be willing to go to jail for sources we might not even like, and fly off to war zones or disaster areas without question when editors asked. It was also once considered a virtue to flout the disapproval of colleagues to fight for stories we believed in (Watergate, for instance).

Today no one with a salary will stand up for colleagues like Lee Fang. Our brave truth-tellers make great shows of shaking fists at our parody president, but not one of them will talk honestly about the fear running through their own newsrooms. People depend on us to tell them what we see, not what we think. What good are we if we’re afraid to do it?

If Taibbi is correct in his assessment of the current News Media we are entering a dangerous time in America.

Already a post on this.

Look for Matt to get fired and bend knee. That is all I can see from this. I mean maybe Glen Greenwald won't, but Matt will. He is a brave coward. Been reading his mash potato word salad for years now.

News hasn't been about informing anyone about anything for a long time. News, is just like reality shows...fake and just a platform to hang advertising on.

The networks have decided that profit is more important than being a public service. Doing business the American way!!

I disagree; the other thread is about how the left "lost its mind" and conservatives piling on with their agreement of the left losing its mind.

This thread is about the frightened state of the news industry and how that is tainting the information we receive.

After reading this article I don't know how any one could trust the News Media... that goes far beyond the left losing its mind.

It is in times like these, where journalists so openly and actively peddle in disinformation, that is more frightening than a bunch of leftists losing their mind.

Wait until you guys find out that the majority of the left doesn’t like the MSM either and that the MSM isn’t left wing just because it’s critical of Republicans.

Who is "you guys"?.These are the opions of Matt Taibbi.

He, a person who appears to be left leaning, most certainly has put forth an argument that MSM is being dominated by left wing ideologies and now to a point where differing points of view are intolerable.

So do you want government take over news programming, to make sure we get the truth?

Let the market place and the American people decide what News they want to watch. Isn't that how capitalism works?

btw, I see conservatives on MSM all the time.

Right wingers. Trump supporters. People who have drank the kool aid about the media being a part of the left when in reality they are corporatists.

You know, 99.9% of ATS.

According to Taibbi; market forces and the American people's opinions are not driving news content.

Here he gives an example of a news editor being fired for running an article that addressed an opinion held by 89% of the US population.

Incidentally, that same poll cited by Cotton showed that 73% of Americans described protecting property as “very important,” while an additional 16% considered it “somewhat important.” This means the Philadelphia Inquirer editor was fired for running a headline – “Buildings matter, too” – that the poll said expressed a view held by 89% of the population, including 64% of African-Americans.

"Part of the left" vs "Corporatists that cater to left extremists" is there really a difference? The outcome is the same.

However the information Taibbi provides to support his arguments would suggest you are incorrect. Corporatists wouldn't lightly seek to alienate over 89% of the population by pushing disinformation that does not align with their views.

There is no American Press right now....it has been compromised on all fronts and must be disenfranchised and then rebuilt better and stronger and Private ownership must be outlawed.

The American Press is a Pillar of Democracy, this is why Trillions were spent to buy it and weaponise it against ALL OF AMERICA .

Lots of top-tier media outlets and journalists participated in the coup attempt(s) against about-to-be and President, Donald Trump. They are scared to death that this will be revealed, and possible prosecutions will follow. Especially after AG William Barr said he'd have no problem arresting journalists, under certain circumstances.

Nah, I don't buy that, at least the long term. The news media seemed pretty stable until around the late 90s, early 2000s when a unnoticed transition took place.
It's like Hollywood took over when they realized News personalities are like mini celebrities and should be treated as such and so enter Rich, Opinionated and Emotionally drivin individuals with a diluted perspective of real world society.

Truth is, your Local Yokel could possibility be the last remnants of real world journalism, reporting in the usual happenings of the county, even though they still recieve their marching orders from larger News Corps on specific topics, like Hot buttons issues, via Politics, etc.

What do you want to blame "the media" for? Corporations want their money, morals and ethics be damned.

I cannot for the life of me understand how so many of you profess "the media's bad!" yet you people simply cannot stop consuming it.

You're addicted to the fake outrage. You're addicted to having a mouthpiece help confirm your world views.

Don't blame the media, blame yourself.

A fractional Pubilc Ownership dynamic managed by a Public Trust might do the trick.

The PEOPLE should own and operate the Free Press…. not the Government not Private Individuals or Groups....one share per Person.....lol..game over...100% Public Ownership run by a Public Trust .

Who will pay for the Trust?...lol...well the many Billions of dollars generated by MSM will be ever growing instead of being bled off to feed a global cabals needs...sooooo….it will pay for itself and if managed properly within a single generation will be providing free education for millions of American Kids.

Right, communal ownership. Socialism pure and simple. Leave the MSM alone, the American people can chose what they want to watch and consume without some sanctioned control freaks taking over for the god damn collective.
