I'm not including suicide on my list so leave Bland off of it.

Police kill people in their custody in more ways than gun fire.

Precisely why these stats are useless dross.

There are a lot of ways to interpret stats.

Excellent information, LSU2018. It really puts police shootings in proper perspective. What remains a mystery is the racial or ethnic identity of the other 399 who were killed by police.

I’ve noticed that racial/ethnic data of thousands of victims of murder arrestees is not recorded or provided for the FBI Uniform Crime Report. That’s odd, because apparently, race/ethnicity of the arrestees is always recorded.

Likewise, the race/ethnicity of an average of 16,200 victims per year of nonfatal gunshot wounds was not recorded from 2007-2016. We need that data to better address the problem.

The 2018 FBI Uniform Crime Report’s table 6 shows how many blacks were killed by whites, how many whites were killed by blacks and the same date for Hispanics and “other.” The total number of victims of all races and ethnicities in table 6 is 6,570. But the 2018 FBI UCR table 43 shows a total of 8,957 arrests for homicide and nonnegligent manslaughter. Table 43 shows the race/ethnicity of all arrestees.

For some unknown reason, the race/ethnicity of about 27 percent of the victims of murder arrestees was either not recorded or not provided to the FBI for its 2018 UCR. That’s almost the same percentage of nonfatal gunshot victims whose race/ethnicity was not recorded (162,000 out of 603,000 total).

It needs to become mandatory to record such information. If we don’t know who’s getting shot, who’s doing the killing and who’s getting murdered, we can’t make completely informed decisions on how to address these enormous problems.

Call me cynical, but I suspect the mainstream news media is completely uninterested because the stats prove that blacks are mostly murdered by other blacks, and whites are far more likely to be the victims of interracial murder.

It would be very interesting and useful to see stats re: the race/ethnicity of victims and offenders for other violent crimes, such as rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

We can continue to assume that blacks are being victimized by our criminal justice system, or we can make a good faith effort to learn the reality by careful recording, dissemination and analysis of arrest and victim data.

Perhaps it will be proven that blacks are more likely to be victims in many categories of interracial crimes. We won’t know until a serious nationwide study is done. The news media should never be afraid to seek and publish the truth, which is never racist.

Youre leaving out the MOST important part of your statistic..

The fact that it isnt adjusted for population percentage.

The country is 76% white and 13% African American

So in all actuality.. you just proved you oppositions point. PoC are disproportionately targeted, shot, and killed in comparison to their Caucasian counterparts

Thank you, Ill be here all night.. enjoy the veal

So you are using wrong data points here...Not all whites commit crime just as not all blacks commit crime, so you can't use total population and need to look at who is actually doing crime.

Looking at 2018 if we add up the major crime groups put out by the FBI we get this.

Whites 3,152,000 major crimes 59%
Blacks 1,417,000 major crimes 26%
Hispanics 734,000 major crimes 14%
Others 260,000 major crimes 1%
Total 5,363,000

So your 13% of the population does 26% of the heavy crimes and with the big one murder they are over 50% of all murders.

So looking at just whites/blacks we see that blacks are damn close to 50% of what white do in crime, so if we look at the death numbers they are pretty damn close too if we account that maybe people who murder have a higher chance of dying to the police.

The big take away is 49 unarmed whites were killed to the 9 blacks, so is it safe to say if you are doing a crime and unarmed you have a higher chance to be killed by the police if you are white than black?

I think looking at statistics the most direct point is that cops do not kill more blacks because they are black.

This may go some way to explain the way people react to these situations.

BLM to all, but in the 48 hours after Floyd was murdered over 80 blacks were shot and over 20 of them killed in Chicago alone, not by the police.

Where were the protests for Danny Shaver? Where were the cries from politicians and celebrities to curb police violence?

There weren't any. Danny Shaver was white. The media doesn't care when the police murder a white, middle class family man in cold blood on video.

Just imagine if Danny Shaver had been black.

This all goes down the path that many police forces need to be trained in how to deescalate the situations. This is the top problem in all this. It is not a race thing at all....

The truth behind this topic is it's only perpetuated by far right conservatives. Your "good" cops, don't do anything about your miniscule amount of police brutality. The police police themselves.

Blacks 2.5 times likely to be killed by cops than whites

That's not actually the point the OP was making. The statistics referenced show the number of black and white unarmed victims of lethal police force are proportionate.

I think looking at statistics the most direct point is that cops do not kill more blacks because they are black.

Also, only 60 percent of everyone living in America is a non-Hispanic white, not 76 percent. The FBI lumps Hispanic crime stats in with white arrests, because Hispanics are an ethnic group, not a separate race (tell that to La Raza Unida ...).

Almost 70 percent (69.777 percent) of all arrestees for murder and nonnegligent homicide in 2018 were black or Hispanic, even though blacks and Hispanics combined are only 31 percent of the population.

About 27.7 percent of homicide/nonnegligent manslaughter in 2018 were Non-Hispanic white, although whites are 60 percent of the population. Who was complaining about ratios and percentages of the population earlier?

Thank goodness the FBI UCR table 43 has a separate section for Hispanic/Latino arrests, or we’d still be thinking whites are arrested far more than in reality!

Finally, about 53.3 percent of homicide and nonnegligent manslaughter arrestees in 2018 were black. It’s all there in the FBI UCR.
