To those of you who are considered far-left, I would like for you to let the ATS community know what it is exactly that you would like to see accomplished in terms of reshaping America? As a political atheist and squarely in the middle, I would also like to know what some of our more conservative members would like to see preserved? The reason I bring this up is because I have noticed a lot of infighting that appears, on the surface, to be pretty juvenile in nature. I honestly think that it is extremely important right now that we all talk, listen, and respect each others opinions in regards to the current societal issues plaguing America. Who knows, if we actually respect one another, perhaps we can make some minor progress here. At the end of the day, we all want happiness, which can certainly be accomplished through a compromise.

If we, the ATS community, were tasked with curing society’s ills, well, I’m curious what that might look like. So, here is an interesting concept, why don't we all come together and determine what would satisfy most of us? Who knows, maybe through some trial and error, we might collectively find something that works?

I would like to have Americans live under the rule of law.

I would really like the Constitution to be preserved.

If there are issues citizens have with the Constitution, then there is a way that it can be changed, as it has over the course of our history.

If we are no longer going to live under the rule of law (as it seems is happening right now) then my most fervent wish is that we can take this to its rational conclusion as soon as possible so that we as a nation can reset and rebuild.

If that includes a civil war, so be it.

Because we have gotten beyond crazy right now as a nation and it needs to stop.

One way or the other.

Thanks for the reply, I share a lot of the same sentiments. However, I don't think we are close to Civil War. In other words, what we are witnessing is an extremely small segment of the population either acting out or being directed to cause chaos. I don't think most people want war, only happiness, which is hard to come by at the moment. These protests are relieving a lot of pint up frustration for people for a variety of different reasons (talking about the peaceful ones). I wish, and I am not accusing you of this, that we wouldn't blame the left or right (only individuals) for their actions. Right now we all need to stand together and show the world that the overwhelming majority of us, no matter what political affiliation, are not the savages we are being made out to be. I honestly don't think we’re nearly as divided as we are being led to believe.

Actually, having just spent an hour trying to read a book while my wife was watching the riots on the TV in the background, I have a better idea.

I believe it was the comedian Sam Kinnison that came up with the original idea, the Purge movies sort of expanded on it but here is my "fix" for America.

For the month of July, there are no laws.

At all.

You can buy heroin at your local 7/11... you can shoot the cashier to get it.

You can do whatever you want.

That frees normally law-abiding citizens to fight back against the absolute lawlessness that is taking over our country that seems to have no repercussions.

Let's put everyone on an equal playing field for a month out of the year.

And see where we are in a few years.

I personally think that it would get rid of about 100 million useless eaters and balance the scales.

I'm all for this.

I think I will start a White House petition for this.

Haha, that’s basically happening now, but only the good are being victimized. I honestly think, under those circumstances, good people would band together and protect one another. The ones sewing chaos would be promptly eliminated, as you suggested, by both sides of the political equation.

Here is the problem.

It only took 2 posts to get to:
Civil war
Lawlessness, murder, violence, the purge of undesirables.

Oh yeah. And the protection of our constitution.

I can not speak for the other poster, but I am pretty sure that he was joking. As for me, I certainly was and would never want to actually participate in something like that. Also, if you read my response, I said that people would stand together in an awful event like that and protect each other, no matter their political affiliation, from those who are actively trying to harm people.

I can also see how now might not be the best time to joke like that, as well, even if what is going on slightly resembles the Purge.

One thing that I have noticed is that the constitution is often brought up in discussions. A lot of people have risked their very lives to migrate here and enjoy what it offers us. Once it is gone, which I highly doubt it ever will be, we would all be extremely sorry.

Progressivism has won the tug of war with conservatism and always will. Change is inevitable and no politics can stand still or go backwards. So being pulled in the direction of the socialism and big government seems to be the eternal fate of conservatism. We need to pull in another direction, a third direction. The political machinery is all there. We just need use it in its intended way. We need to assert the liberal tradition the United States was once founded upon, and to reject its modern perversion. We need to pull in the direction of liberty.

I suppose that I am progressive but I would say that we have lost. The movement has been hijacked by a bunch of dangerous lunatics. The problem is that common sense simply is not prevailing. Th great racial divide continues and that is not being bridged. What is needed is equality of opportunity without guaranteeing equality of outcome. American education is in the toilet so people get fancy degrees and do not find work easily.

I support the protests but do not support the looting. There are always good cops and bad cops. Some of which are black!

It only took an hour of listening to the news for me to get to that.

Have you woken up yet?

Or are you waiting for your house to get burnt down to realize the actual problem in America right now?

We are a nation of laws.

That no longer apply to certain people right now.

But we are supposed to abide by the laws...

While the lawless loot and pillage.

That's not a problem with you?

I respect your stance, Tiger 5, you seem like a rational and level headed person. What you wrote has me thinking though, I’m curious if there is any reason why the progressive moment has been allowed to be taken over by people with more extreme viewpoints? What I am getting at is if you think it is possible that this is being done deliberately to take power away from the progressive movement and invalidate the cause? If a large segment of the population stars to associate domestic terrorism with progressivism, which it is anything but, then we are in trouble. Classic liberalism is a beautiful thing, so is conservatism in numerous ways, a good mix of them both has historically done us well.

You do make a great point. What is going on now should be stopped by any means necessary. Four innocent officers were shot tonight along with various structures being burnt in St. Louis. Who ever did that should be taken off the streets and dealt with immediately. That is not protesting, that is murderous intent, all of this must be stopped before it gets even more out of control.

Of course there is also the ideological deadlock between two outmoded political theories. The whole issue is made worse by the lobbyists movement.

What a far leftist means by reshaping America to their liking.

Is what they been pushing for decades.

Free snip (which apparantely we no longer need government programs for).

And making white people pay for anything they can think of.

And if BET's founders latest comment is another indicator. Reparations for the oppressed.

What they want.

Is a chip off the old communist block in a nutshell.

As I read this, I was thinking the rule of law would be nice to be upheld. It was refreshing that it was in the first sentence of the first reply and then I saw it was you and it gave me a big stupid grin.
