If you look at the chart it's just crazy. The virus is spreading throughout the Country but some places are being hit very hard. Specifically New York and New Jersey. Places like Florida and Louisiana are having problems but not like New York. California is flattening the curve so the question is why New York?

This is a chart of New York and New Jersey vs. the other States.

When I saw this chart, I said wow. New York almost seems like it was targeted and it spilled over to New Jersey. If this was a biological weapon, of course they would target New York for the symbolism.

If it were the case, my guess would be North Korea.

Coronavirus: North Korea claims to be 'totally free' of virus

Oliver Hotham, managing editor of specialist news site NK News, agreed that North Korea has probably had cases.

"It's very unlikely that it has seen no cases because it borders China and South Korea. [Especially with China], given the amount of cross border trade and the economic relationship I really don't see how its possible they could have prevented it," he said.

However, he adds that it is "unlikely" there is a full scale outbreak.

"They really did take precautions early. I think it's possible they've prevented a full on outbreak."

First off, it would be smart to start the spread in China because nobody will be looking to see if any cases originated in New York. This would mean they sent a bunch of people to New York with the virus and that's why you're seeing this explosion of cases in New York/New Jersey. There would have been people walking around New York spreading the virus and nobody realized it.

If you think about it, it's genius. You act all friendly with Trump and the United States and nobody will bother to look. Did North Korea slide China some medicine to slow the virus? Russia too?

Look a Russia, China and North Korea. Look at America and Europe.

US now has more coronavirus cases than any other country

nypost.com...

This was March 26 with over 84,000 cases. Today, it's over 266,000.

Do I think this is all just nature doing it's thing? Probably but New York and New Jersey seems out of pocket. There's 6,985 total deaths in the United States(it's most likely more as some deaths aren't counted as Covid deaths). Over 3,500 come from New York and New Jersey.

NYC is a city of 8 million people crammed onto a small island that is 2.5 miles wide and about 13 miles long. It is the most dense city in the US. People pay $1 million to live in 600 sqft studio apartments. You have to take the subway everywhere as it is impractical to own a car regardless of how rich you may be.

NJ is basically just a suburb of New York City with a lot of people commuting.

Im sure it had nothing to do with the virus spreading around while people thought it wouldn't reach the U.S and or it was a hoax...

The population density also plays a role.

way to many people per sq foot in that ell hole, add in old buildings, old pipes, poor air quality, and a disregard for the shelter in place which helped speed the spread.

It's a timing thing. And NY is the major international travel hub. It's still early in this whole pandemic. Wait for about 4 weeks and the picture will change dramatically.

Let alone, people are still being ignorant to the idea, this virus, can mutate to something worse. Not suprised nyc is getting hit as hard as it is. The current strain of virus, may not concern people but if it mutates to something more deadly, maybe then that will get their attention.

I'm thinking it had more to do with the Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations in early February:

The Timeline of How Bill de Blasio Prepared New York City for the Coronavirus

The coronavirus had been circulating in Wuhan since at least early December. The last direct flight from Wuhan, China, to John F. Kennedy Airport had landed January 23....

Those “who had recently traveled from Wuhan were not being urged to self-quarantine or avoid large public gatherings”...

[February 2] Health Commissioner Barbot tweeted, “As we gear up to celebrate the Lunar New Year in NYC, I want to assure New Yorkers that there is no reason for anyone to change their holiday plans, avoid the subway, or certain parts of the city because of coronavirus”...

[February 4] During a radio interview, Mayor de Blasio [snip] noted that New York City has the largest Chinese population outside of Asia...

[February 5] Health Commissioner Barbot declared on Twitter, “Today our city is celebrating the Lunar New Year parade in Chinatown, a beautiful cultural tradition with a rich history in our city. I want to remind everyone to enjoy the parade and not change any plans due to misinformation spreading about coronavirus.”

That sounds like quite the germfest to me and explains it very well.

ETA: To put the size of the celebrations in perspective for previous years:

About 500,000 people attend New York's Chinese New Year parade each year to enjoy dragons, floats, and seas of red and gold

Despite Coronavirus Fears, Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade Goes On

I haven't been able to find attendance numbers for this years parade, but they were expected to be down. Even if only half as many attended this year, that's still 250,000 people. And it's probably safe to assume there were people infected at the celebrations, including people direct from China.

Huge population, densest population in the country, huge amounts of international travel, and a subway that a large part of population depends on that has them packed together like sardines. Why wouldn't everyone expect New York have the most cases in the country?

All of the above ignores crucial factors like population density of the area in question, the large number of international transport hubs (LaGuardia, JFK and Newark airports) method of travel in NYC particularly is largely public transit, subways and busses and then there’s the Lengthy asymptomatic Period where people are contagious. there are a lot of factors and we need to look at the whole picture, not just a microcosm of the picture.

Not to mention the state of New York, was not even close to being prepared for a medical emergency. DC literally had to try and save the state get them ready, Which they still are not

To be fair though, I don’t think any states are prepared for what’s coming. The Georgia Governor just claimed That he only found out 24 hours previously that asymptomatic carriers could infect others.

Well sadly, they may be next. It’s a catastrophe.. I just feel like I been saying this stuff over and over, when this is all over THE WHO, and China will have some questions that will need answers to. China, and The Who down played this virus until it was to late. Sadly, our governments were not as smart as I guess we hoped they shoulda been.

Or Occam and common sense would say the following, "sitting in NY and close proximity to North Jersey is this place called New York City. "

1. 8.6 million people
2. A little over 3 miles big
3. Massive, wide reaching public transport.
4. Massive international travel
5. That number from item 1 is densely packed within the 5 boroughs of NYC

Literally take item 1 and add it to any of the other 4 items listed and you can answer your question without any additional complexity or other variables.

Agreed. And people have to realize that todays data from New York will over time move into new regions and cities. The overview, as you point out, is not static. It changes from moment to moment due to many different variables.
