I grew up with him, we went to High School together. He was always the one among us who debunked rumors, and stayed out of trouble (unlike me). Yet he was always one of our best friends.

I asked him what he thought about this COVID-19 virus thing. His response? "Bob, the scariest part is...we just don't know."
Then he asked me a question...he said "How many times have you went to your doctor when you had the flu?".

I answered..."Practically none, almost never!"

He said, "alright, never mind; how many times have you gone to your PCP during flu season, for whatever reason???"

My answer: "Well, lots of times, for med checks and so many other things"

His response:....:...."EXACTLY...and did you ever see your doctors and nurses in full Hazmat ABC gear, like you do now???????

When my mother had her stroke it was determined that she had acquired a pseudomonas infection. Everyone who entered her room was required to don full protective gear. Your friend is full of crap

I'm well beyond 50.

My experience is different. Myself, my mother's doctor, and nurses did not enter her room without donning full protective gear. It was heartbreaking to not be able to actually make contact with her.

This in no way diminishes the level of health crisis caused by COVID19, but hyperbole does not help.

I personally feel like before, with the flu, most people tried to treat it at home and only went to the doctor as a last resort.

Whereas now, people are flooding the ER wanting to be tested to see if it's the flu or the dreaded COVID19

I have seen a time or two, doctors/nurses in full scrub due to a patient's health issue.

But not to the likes of what is being done now, donning it day in and day out for every patient.

I feel for the health care workers/doctors on the front lines.

I'm saying that the claim that full protective gear in hospitals is unheard of is crap.

Do you want me to repeat myself a few more times?

Yes. I did see that. I have seen that. Ever so much.

I have gone to see close relatives in the hospital critical care area. The nurses were fully masked and had to put their stuff on before coming in. Yet, we did not have to wear anything to visit the person. I guess it is protection for the nurses so they do not spread diseases to other patients, it is a rule they have to follow with certain illnesses like Pneumonia and unknown infections. I guess over the last four or five years it has changed and sometimes relatives need to wear masks. They had a real problem with certain bacteria and fungus infecting patients at the hospital here but now they built a new hospital and there are less problems with microbes being passed around, but they are also more strict now from what I have heard. I have not even gone into that new hospital.

I think what they meant was barring any special circumstances have you ever just walked into GP office or a first care clinic to be greeted by staff in full gear.

I can somewhat confirm this. A local doctors office a couple of blocks away is still accepting patients but first they are greeted outside their temperature is taken. If they are ok they can go in. The doctor still sees them but they are wearing protective masks, face shields and gowns. I can say I’ve never gone for a routine visit to be greeted by this. People are still going to doctors for the normal stuff never mind flu and covid19 symptoms.

A cardiac center is following similar protocol. No one is allowed in unless their temperature is taken. I’ve seen face masks on nurses and doctors but I’m not sure if they fully gear up when seeing patients. I haven’t been in personally. I know patients who go for routine heart examinations. I will try and confirm if they are or not. . I’ve also used the place for my stress tests. Passed with flying colors! Haven’t been there in a bit. I would assume other places are following similar procedures but I can’t say because I have no direct knowledge. It may be up to each place.

Also hospitals are being selective with who gets in. It’s not just scared people who have the sniffles over burdening them.

It’s not all grim. The death rate is still low and a lot of people seem to be doing fine. It’s the rate of spread. Too much at one time and well it’s still new and a little unpredictable . I’m not sure which side is worse the NWO take over crowd or the apocalypse crowd. We will get through just be smart and patient.

I also hope that the places that aren’t impacted stay that way and people there can emerge and say what was all this about. This was stupid.

Ya, we have 900 within 50 miles. 80+ in hospital, 52 of those in ICU, I think 19 dead, at least 8 emerg room docs out of commission, and dozens of other health care workers.

Since connecting with friends today via phone, I know of 5 infected now, people I know personally, and 5 others through friends, 2 dead in Japan.

So yo..you better get a grip.

Yeah, a lot of us know someone who has died, or is dying of this now. And I know a lot of nurses who are probably working themselves to death in the hot areas at the moment. It would be great if people would stop calling this a fake news media hoax.

I took this from FireByrds "reassuring and informative video" thread from yesterday:

vimeo.com...

Dr. David Price of Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City, ICU Specialist. He treats Covid-19 patients daily and looks like he hasn't been sleeping in the video (nice pair of eyebags). He says somewhere in the video that the only time the Doctors and nurses wear masks is if the patient is symptomaticly coughing and sneezing. Simply being positive in a test for Covid-19 isn't enough. Now, the family practices freaking out are exactly that, family practices. It's up to each office how they overreact.

It reminds me of the food service franchise I work for. I blow through 30 pairs of gloves easily on a full shift. Every 20mins a timer goes off and I have to stop what I'm doing, wash hands and change gloves. I could be standing in the same area for an hour, never moving, and have to do it 3 times.

Everytime I walk outside the door to give a customer an order, if they're in their car because drive-thru and management pulled them forward to keep the window timer low (so their stats look good for regional and district management), even though I never touch them, I have to do it afterward. That's more understandable because of the door handles I guess.

Everytime I take money from a customer and give change or swipe their card, I have to have gloves on and change them afterward of course.

A couple of the Grubhub delivery people who come to pick up orders walk in with surgical masks and gloves to pick up the bag. If I take it to their car, likewise. I've only noticed it with the same two ladies but still, it's absurd. The bus drivers wear surgical masks and you aren't allowed to sit in the front of the bus; you also have to exit through the rear door.

Yesterday there were 12 confirmed cases and the population of my city is 179,000. That's 0.006% of people diagnosed. The unknown number of carriers is undoubtably higher but it'd have to be astronomically small.

I think the key takeaway from what your trauma doctor friend was trying to convey is in the qualifying phrase

”like they do now?”

Undoubtedly, medical providers are familiar with, and at various times, for particular patients, have donned protective gear as they are currently.

But the point he was trying to get across was that he had never before known a situation were medical personnel were required by circumstances to depend as heavily and continuously on PPE’s?

No you haven't.

You have seen your mother's doctors dressed that way in a very specific circumstance.

I don't mean to be a prick but you are supporting the OP by showing 1 rare case where someone who wasn't your doctor wore it.

The idea that doctors are wearing hazmat suits and stuff more often than prior to COVID-19 isn't exactly profound.
