Have to take a step back sometimes and think about things. People on a plane going down are worried about the plane crashing. The pilot is not worried about the plane crashing. The pilot is worried about the engine loss and going through procedures. She has serious cancer but, maybe that's not the most imminent threat to her life with a weakened immune system. If she gets the virus going to that appointment her problems just got switched around. If she goes to the appointment and dies of the virus in a week you would get it.

I see your point and it's a good one. They still could of called.

As Ignorant Ape said;

but it seems to me utter incompetence - that your mates clinic is closed - yet patients not informed

that's crazy Stoopid! In this "communications revolution" a simple message like that can't be conveyed. I went to my drs today at 11:30am. As I waited for the bus to go there, his secretary rang me to say that "due to Everything, IF I didn't feel like coming and seeing him, he would happily send my Rx's to my chemist and I didn't need to come, but I wanted to see him, so I went. They always text you a reminder the day before your appts or should the dr be unavailable - very professional, and Free. Socialist medicine, Australian style

Why couldn't they let her know. It's not like you can't send bulk texts to patients as soon as they know what's happening

I had an appt with a PM specialist at a major hospital next week - 24th to be precise. Today, on the 18th I got a txt message explaining that ALL OP (Out Patient) appointments had been cancelled until future notice.

NBD, It's not urgent

But ... sadly I think the 'logic' behind their decisions probably has a lot to do with her condition, Stage 4 pancreatic is at the "palliative care" stage . . . Unless a miracle occurs, she hasn't got too long.

She's too old for a transplant and TBH, even "pancreatitis" in the elderly is a Life threatening condition, let alone cancer!
And it's rare that chemotherapy will 'make her feel better' -- IMHO that sounds almost like the "placebo effect", which happens more than you know.

So today my friend was excited to get down to the City of Hope and get her treatment.

(because) She's been feeling quite ill the past week and bless her heart she couldn't wait to feel better.

I don't think I've met anyone who's had chemo who says "it makes them feel better"!
Maybe if they've got a good chance of recovery BUT Never just after the treatment.

People would rather die than go through more "treatment" ... Y'know maybe being the lovely lady she is and I imagine quite the 'social butterfly' and always busy, is both in denial about her impending death And lonely, yeah, even with lots of "not so close" people about, while the 'attention' she gets helps 'take her mind of her condition', maybe what she really needs is "someone to talk to, openly, honestly and sincerely about "what her future holds"

If I knew I was going to die "soon" ... more than anything else, I'd want to "be ok with it and be Able to accept it" . . which aint easy, esp for those who have much 'to live for' ... my grandma was like this, made it to 99yo!

I was super close with her from when she was 78 until she died ... the only things I didn't talk with her about were "intimate Details of my sex life - of which she knew more than enough! Nothing was unable to be discussed.

In Fact, I was only thinking about her a few hours ago -- yet she died 20yrs ago! Yet her memory lives on IN me. Her memory still influences my behavior as I know she would approve of some things I've recently done

I honestly think she was "ready to go" a few years earlier, she never became 'demented', just 'tired' (of the bull# in life, family crap etc) BUT she 'hung on for everyone else, not herself. I know she was "ok with dying" when she did,

In Fact I "gave her permission" a year or so earlier as I told her "I'll be fine, don't worry about me, I'll miss you but eh, c'est la vie includes mort!" and we'd laugh. Most people are scared of death. IMHO the very best thing you could do for her is see if you can engage her in some "deep and meaningful conversation about death" -- the docos about the people who choose to die via suicide are most enlightening, as they talk about all the 'reasons to stay' (loving family) and the 'reasons to go' (don't wish to be a Burden on the loving family OR don't want their Alzheimer's make them "forget their lives" etc etc

She needs to find Peace with herself and strongly believe that "it's ok" ... which is easier written than done - look up Sadguru's YouTube videos on death ... becoz "we don't die", we just 'leave our bodies' and move on.

Strangely, often extremely ill patients suddenly get a "new lease of Life" in the week or so before they die. They "feel great, not sick" and are suddenly able to do all sorts of things they couldn't "just last week" ... and then they drop dead, usually quickly.

When drs see this kind of behavior, they know that the patients time is almost up, it's quite bizarre to see and then one day they will rapidly decline and die OR die in their sleep. Could be worse.

One more thing, maybe the drs have decided that further treatment is futile, together with this CoVID 'crisis" have decided they 'can do without the money they'll make treating her as it won't help ... it's all in her mind at Stage 4,

What is stage IV cancer?

Stage IV cancer is sometimes referred to as metastatic cancer, because it often means the cancer has spread from its origin to distant parts of the body.

This stage may be diagnosed years after the initial cancer diagnosis and/or after the primary cancer has been treated or removed. When a cancer metastasizes to a different part of the body, it is still defined by its original location. For instance, if breast cancer metastasizes to the brain, it is still considered breast cancer, not brain cancer.

Check out the site below, it has all the information about pancreatic cancer you should be able to understand, but realize, your friend is only delaying the inevitable, and not by much. yet they say some people make extraordinary recoveries,

but people who give someone "false hope" Esp when "loved ones' LIE and tell her what she want to hear, NOT what they think, are being deceitful and the betrayal one feels when discovering this is as bad as your lover leaving 'for no reason'

www.webmd.com...

which means the "cancer" has spread to several other parts of the body and is basically no longer treatable -- the Best they can do is try to help her "feel comfortable" with drugs -- while you help her "get her Head straight"

Nobody lives forever . . . the greatest gift you could give her is Genuine friendship and support

Source; Me, having been on deaths door several times, half a life ago I played a game with myself, the "what IF I ONLY HAD 30mins left to live, I've just been bitten by a venomous something and the venom's working fast -- SO, "what would I DO?"

I KNOW I'm going to die, so how would I face it. It took me about 27 of those 30mins to finally decide what I'd do" -- I'd kick back and chillax, have a bong and wait to see 'what's next' - - and Be OK with it ... that was over 30yrs ago and I still feel the same way. I've asked other to "try this thought experiment on dying" and I've yet to have anyone come up with the same answers..

she's very fortunate to have a true friend like you

Yes, only be very careful not to use too much!

You’re a good friend!

Directions I would have no idea what to do?

Online vitamin suppliers. GNC etc. offer pill form supplements or drops.

Very sorry for your friend, best wishes and luck to her.

Sadly this is a prime example to the "its not going to hurt me" crowd, it will hit home at some point.

So sorry to hear this. Every human is valuable and she should have been treated better and yeah they could have called. I am sure she was on a list of cancellations that ended up at the bottom of a pile. Unfortunately these places are unable to handle the load they have now let alone the individuals with long-term conditions. I'd be cautious of suggesting supplements without knowing what drugs she's on now and how these supplement might interact with those drugs or her treatments. Everything happens for a reason and it's a good possibility that she might have walked in and contracted the virus. With her already compromised immune system just going there is a huge risk. As long as she is stable even tho it sucks I'd say to just hang tight until we know it's safe for her to head out into a public place, especially a medical facility.

Damn it Johnny my water bills gonna be high this month.

I don't think it was the chemo that made her feel better. But she'll
be on messenger soon answering all the texts I sent her. It would be
great if we could something that might actually fight for her as well
as bring her some relief.

Thank you for a great read brother

Exactly a few of the things there I managed to realize on my own.
Once I cooled off and got to talk'n to you fine people.

I'm fine now after a struggle with my anger. Still work'n on it.
Just want do what I can for her instead of just telling her,
" If there's anything I can do?"

My aunt saved her own life when she got some type of cancer, by using high doses of CBD. She was told she would die. I'd look into that if I were you.

She's is one of the sweetest ladies I've ever met. The type of
women who could calm a violent temper in the middle of an angry
fit. She commands respect with the slightest touch. And could stop
any man in his tracks if she slightly elevates her voice. She knows no
jealousy and no one she knows could be jealous of her. But she is
just a friend I've known since 94.

Another friend who over the years has developed cancer. Stage 4
pancreatic motha- effen, gawd damn cancer. So today my friend
was excited to get down to the City of Hope and get her treatment.
She's been feeling quite ill the past week and bless her heart she
couldn't wait to feel better.

This is what has me wanting to take hostages and become a TV star.
She drove all the way down there today a good 2 hours. She couldn't
get thru the door. They turned her away because of the virus. My friend
is dying of cancer and I'm so angry right now. What no one could even
call her and give her a heads up? I mean I'm fighting back angry tears
as I'm writing this. I told her WTF? You might as well try to heal yourself!

It's bad enough seeing her suffer but now she has to wait a whole
Friggen month? How brutal is that for the last person on earth who
should be going thru this? God this world is just so wrong! How do
those people even sleep working thru a system that treats people
people that way? Any way I had to vent some where so that's why
you're reading this ATS. If I could trade places with her? On my skin I
would.

Has someone stormed the citadel and told her cancer specialist that this happened and asked for an alternative? I realize the hospital IS a risky place for her (they're probably locked down with COVID-19 cases right and left, and if she came in contact with the virus she wouldn't survive). However, there may be alternate treatment centers or options around.

Note... this is apparently what they're doing for "non urgent" cancer treatments because cancer patients are so very very fragile. (www.mdedge.com... )

But if her doctor is pressed, there may be some other good options. She needs an ombudsman or a paladin to step in and smack the medical system around a bit and find the better option.
