Compare the numbers, the time scale and the mortality rate.

Then you'll see that this is just another political piece for ATS and the right wingers here.

Nothing more nothing less. All I've learned from this thread is that people have far too much time on their hands. Maybe the OP should get a job for the GOP.

Maybe they already have...

Democrat leaders (Chuck Schumer, Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, etc.) are complaining that the Trump administration is "not doing enough" to combat what they're calling the "rapidly spreading and deadly CoronaVirus disease."

If President Trump is "not doing enough", how did they feel when President Barack Obama waited until ONE THOUSAND Americans had died, before taking any action?

In April 2009, H1N1 (the swine flu) was first detected in the U.S. According to the CDC, this “virus was a unique combination of influenza virus genes never previously identified in either animals or people.” Sounds almost like the descriptions we’ve been hearing of the coronavirus.

It began to spread immediately and President Obama addressed Americans briefly (1:27) at the end of April. He called on Americans to take the same precautions they would to prevent any other flu. “Wash your hands, cover your mouth when you cough. Stay home from work if you’re sick.”

And he assured us the government would do whatever it takes to keep Americans safe.

By October, Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the CDC, declared: “Millions of people in the United States have been infected. At least 20,000 have been hospitalized. And more than 1,000 have died.”

President Obama finally declared H1N1 a public health emergency on October 24, 2009. He issued a statement: “The 2009 H1N1 pandemic continues to evolve. The rates of illness continue to rise rapidly within many communities across the nation, and the potential exists for the pandemic to overburden health care resources in some localities. Thus, in recognition of the continuing progression of the pandemic, and in further preparation as a nation, we are taking additional steps to facilitate our response.”

On November 12, 2009, the CDC reported an estimated 22 million Americans had been infected with H1N1 and 4,000 Americans had died.

FAST FORWARD TO 2020... with President Donald J. Trump in charge of taking care of Americans.

On December 30, 2019, scientists in China “a cluster of patients with pneumonia of unknown etiology was observed in Wuhan, China, and reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) China bureau in Beijing.

A week later,January 7, 2020, a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) was isolated from these patients.

On January 31, 2020, President Trump declared a public health emergency. USA Today reported that “quarantines of Americans who have recently been to certain parts of China” had been set up, “the first quarantine order issued by the federal government in over 50 years.”

Among the other steps taken:

The government began restricting U.S. access to non-citizens from China. Flights filled with U.S. citizens who were in Wuhan were brought to America and those people were quarantined on U.S. military bases for two weeks.

U.S. citizens who have been in China’s Hubei province during the past 14 days and are returning to the U.S. States will undergo health screenings and be monitored during mandatory quarantines of up to 14 days, officials said.

Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar also announced a temporary suspension of entry into the United States of foreign nationals who pose a risk for the transmission of the coronavirus.

All flights from China to the U.S. will be funneled to one of seven airports that are designated ports of entry: New York, San Francisco, Seattle, Honolulu, Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta.
More at: www.redstate.com... public-health-emergency

This is just another example of how Democrats and the Mainstream Media allowed President Barack Obama to do almost anything he wanted, without complaining about his lack of caring, or his lack of accomplishments.

And, because Democrats were 100% immersed and fixated on Impeaching President Trump in January, he and his Administration had to unilaterally take proactive measures to protect Americans.

Instead of waiting 6 months for thousands of Americans to die, like the Obama Administration did, the Trump Administration began taking action just 3 weeks after the Pandemic was declared in China. But Democrat leaders have the GALL to complain that Trump's "not doing enough".

I think this is one area that all leaders hate to be in.

If they act too fast they can do irreversible damage the economy and cause panic.
If they act too slow, people die & more people get sick.

Either way, people should not rely on others (esp the government) when determining safety for themselves and family.

Oh for chrissake, this OP is just total bull puckey and has already been debunked: Obama declared a public health emergency within 2 weeks of reporting of the first case in the US; that's what caused the declaration. At that point in time, there was one fatality from the disease in the US. Here is a pointer to a contemporaneous news story about it:

www.politico.com...

For anyone interested in what the Obama administration actually did to handle the H1N1 influenza outbreak in 2009, here is a pointer to a timeline of events, compiled by the CDC:

www.cdc.gov...

I have extracted some of the important dates:

April 15: First human infection with new influenza A H1N1 virus detected in California.

April 17: Second human infection with the new influenza A H1N1 virus detected in California about 130 miles away from first infection, with no known connection to previous patient.

April 18: First novel 2009 H1N1 flu infections were reported by CDC to the World Health Organization (WHO) through the U.S. International Health Regulations Program.

April 22: CDC activated the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

April 24: CDC uploaded complete gene sequences of new H1N1 2009 virus to a publically-accessible international influenza database.

April 26: The United States Government declared 2009 H1N1 a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and CDC began releasing 25% of antiviral drugs needed to treat this new influenza virus -oseltamivir and zanamivir–from the federal stockpile.

April 28: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new CDC test to detect 2009 H1N1 infections

May 1: Domestic and global shipments of new CDC test to detect 2009 H1N1 began.

July 22: Clinical trials testing the 2009 H1N1 flu vaccine began.

September 15: The FDA announced its approval of four 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines.

October 5: First doses of H1N1 vaccine were given in the U.S.

So, within about 2 weeks of hearing about the first US fatality, the virus genome had been sequenced and provided to all researchers capable of manufacturing vaccines, the CDC Emergency Operations Center had been activated, Obama declared a Public Health Emergency, and government stocks of antiviral drugs were already being distributed.

Within about 3 months, clinical trials of vaccines had begun, within about 5 months vaccines were approved, and within about 6 months the public was being vaccinated.

The declaration that Obama made on October 24, 2009 was a “national emergency” NOT a “public health emergency”. Declaration of a national emergency allowed local and state governments to set up large numbers of sites where people could be vaccinated, because by that time there were about 30 million doses of vaccine becoming available by the end of the year.

Ummmm... wow. Thanks for that. Unbelievable.

I guess some of you will ask where I was, but I actually don't know. All I know is, I've never even heard about this pandemic. Seriously. I had heard about H1N1, but not in the sense of a pandemic.

From the wiki page:

"The 2009 flu pandemic in the United States was a novel strain of the Influenza A/H1N1 virus, commonly referred to as "swine flu", that began in the spring of 2009. The virus had spread to the US from an outbreak in Mexico.[116]

As of mid-March 2010, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimated that about 59 million Americans contracted the H1N1 virus, 265,000 were hospitalized as a result, and 12,000 died."

Twelve thousand died within a years time.

Only 3 months into the H1N1, the stats were 25,000-27,000 infected/confirmed:

"The earliest reported cases in the US began appearing in late March 2009, in California,[118][119] then spread to infect people in Texas, New York, and assorted other states by mid-April. This spread continued across the country's population and by the end of May had infected citizens in all 50 states. The pattern continued through June of the same year. The total number of confirmed cases varied from 27,717[120] (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed and probable cases) and 25,453 (total of all state confirmed cases) as of June 26, 2009."

I couldn't find anything relating the progression of the number of deaths, just these two mentions:

"Toward the end of June 2009, the number of deaths related to the virus in the US surpassed those of all other countries as well. "

and

"Deaths relating to this new strain of influenza began appearing in the US in late April, and by early June 15, states had reported fatalities related to or directly occurring from the virus. These deaths totaled at 4,000 as of November 15, 2009. The CDC distributed a vaccine for the novel flu strain.[123] using mechanisms already in place for its Vaccines for Children (VFC) program."

And on June 25, the CDC estimated there were likely over one million (1,000,000) cases of the disease in the US, most of which had not been reported or diagnosed.

We're currently at 108 infected, and 11 dead, vs 25,000 infected and unknown dead in 2009 with H1N1. That really adds a huge chunk of perspective for me, and should for many others on here promoting doom-porn.

It should also silence the Trump bashers (based on Obama's abysmal failure with the H1N1 pandemic), but I'm sure it won't.

Anyway, let's see where we are in a month or two.

Also, the H1N1 targeted the young and healthy, especially small children. So, as bad as this may sound, I'd prefer to see the old/infirm/health compromised (yes, even my own parents) get taken by this bug than my 5 and twin 2 1/2 yr olds, and I'll guarantee you my parents would say the exact same thing.

936 Americans had died during the month of September, following a decrease in activity over the summer months. You're right, h1n1 was actually a lot worse than this over a shorter time span and had a much higher mortality rate at the onset.

If you want someone to blame for why swine flu and corona virus are such a problem, here is your answer.

A new survey has exposed the dirtiest surfaces that Americans touch and, unfortunately for the average person, they are some of the most frequent and most necessary things we touch on a daily basis. The top offenders on the list include gas pumps, handles on public mailboxes, escalator rails and ATM buttons.

71 percent of gas pump handles
68 percent of mailbox handles
43 percent of escalator rails
41 percent of ATM buttons
40 percent of parking meters/kiosks
35 percent of crosswalk buttons
35 percent of vending machine buttons

Domestic surfaces that people generally don't bother with:

cutting boards, coffee maker, refrigerator, kitchen sink and countertops, bathroom light switches, refrigerator handles, stove knobs, microwave handles, the shower tub, drains, faucets, floor area around the toilet, bath towels, toothbrushes

Your neighbors are dirty animals and if you haven't washed your hands in the last hour, so are you. Stop blaming the government because they don't clean your house or wash your hands for you. Take some responsibility!

Obama's government saved lives.

From your link:

"This relatively good news resulted not only from luck regarding the spread and virulence of the virus but also from sustained government efforts against it. A comprehensive review of the 2009 swine flu response in last Saturday’s New York Times concludes that “a series of rapid but conservative decisions by federal officials worked out better than many had dared hope.”

Despite fear and pressure, these officials avoided their more extreme options. They did not use the national Tamiflu stockpile as a preventive mechanism. They did not mandate vaccination or issue federal orders to close schools. They did not heed Congressman Eric Massa’s call to close the border with Mexico, the source of the epidemic.

They did, however, provide clear news and advice on cdc.gov and flu.gov."

So, Obama's government saved lives by... doing nothing? Oh, yeah, they 'provided clear news and advice on two government websites'.

Got it.

Trump did take action early! This is good. But it isn't just about the swiftness of the response, but also the quality and competence of the response... also, he has been way too slow on relaxing testing requirements. I wouldn't call his actions swift enough in this case.

How is he supposed to do that when there are no test kits available to use?

I'm sure once they are available, he will order them distributed for use.

That said, I would like to hear him or one of the talking heaqds actually just come out and say this.

"The test kits were faulty. We #ed up. We're fixing them, and will make them available in huge quantities asap."
