Many who have watched the news lately have come to the conclusion that China is over reacting about Taiwan. They have recently stepped up threats of what will happen to the tiny island if they try to break off from the land of the Dragon. But this long term event that has been raging on for years affects more than just the Far East but also modern imperialism itself. Is it right to claim ownership and retaliate against a territory that wishes to succeed? This issue that has plagued not only the United States but nations since the creation of government is coming to the forefront as the heat continues to rise in the Red Sector of Asia:

The number of Chinese ballistic missiles targeting Taiwan is expected to reach at least 800 next year, the island’s defense minister Lee Jye said Wednesday. The People’s Liberation Army currently has 700 ballistic missiles deployed opposite Taiwan, Lee said in his first report to the new session of parliament.

“The number is estimated to increase to 800 next year,” Lee warned in a call for support of a new 480 billion Taiwan dollar (15.24 billion US) arms package aimed at deterring China. His report came one day after Taipei lodged what one senior Taiwanese official called “the strongest protest” against “threats resorting to violent means” by China, which on Tuesday outlined an anti-secession law aimed at Taiwan. Beijing reiterated it was prepared to use force to bring the island to heel but only after all other avenues are exhausted. The alternative to force was peaceful reunification using the one country, two systems model adopted by Hong Kong, according to Wang Zhaoguo, vice chairman of the National People’s Congress, or parliament. Beijing on Friday announced it would boost military spending 12.6 percent this year to 247.7 billion yuan (29.9 billion dollars).

What Americans have to realize that we would probably react the same way if a small part of our country wanted to break off. Forget the American Civil War (1861-1865). What about if Puerto Rico broke off? What about how long it took to release the Panama Canal or some of our Pacific Ocean Territories? Also, look at our main ally in the War on Terror, the United Kingdom: Gibraltar was ceded to Great Britain by Spain in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht; the British garrison was formally declared a colony in 1830. In referendums held in 1967 and 2002, Gibraltarians ignored Spanish pressure and voted overwhelmingly to remain a British dependency. But what is the big deal? Gibraltar is a rock that has angry monkeys (protected by law) and is the controling point of the Mediterrannian. We must remember that no matter how small a piece of land is it is still a piece of land that belongs to a soveriegn nation.

I think if a part of our country wanted to break off, they would be condemend as traitors and hunted down and killed mercilessly. Unless of course it was a group of right wing radicals then they would probably be considered national heroes.

Sadly we can't voluntarily elect for a group to say be sent to Texas and Secede. I nominate the NRP. lol.
