Corona - Covid19 - General Discussion

Welcome Coronauts!

This thread exists to openly talk about and discuss all thoughts, insights, experiences, hopes and fears regarding the ongoing Corona / Covid19 virus that is making its way around the world. The Corona Virus Updates Megathreads are so popular that the purpose of them is being lost due to the heightened feelings surrounding the topic.
So hopefully, we can pull useful information from that thread, and bring it over here to rationally discuss (or have a major panic about).

Hopefully it will remain less panicy, and more rational, insightful and helpful for anyone who needs to vent.

As with all threads, I ask that you try to remain respectful and considerate of others. This virus is, and will be affecting many people in real ways... People are dying or are very ill from its affects, so it should be viewed with a certain seriousness. At the same time, some light hearted posts here and there don't hurt either, as it does help in dealing with it too.

I look forward to all conversations!

Good..We need this thread! I would like to ask my esteemed colleagues if CoronaV-19 is a "DISEASE"?

Reporters and Analysts on MSNBC today were referring to it as a disease.

Well, I just found this quote from the World Health Organisation... WHO

On this website you can find information and guidance from WHO regarding the current outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) that was first reported from Wuhan, China, on 31 December 2019. Please visit this page for daily updates

So I guess the answer is yes!

OK. If "Corona" is the name of the disease, what's the name of the virus?

Thank-you! Disease sounds really bad. I thought it was just the MSM trying to out-do each other in the maximum-hype game.

That means the FLU is a disease too. Every damn thing is a disease!

That's why these new threads are great. I'm sure answers to my questions are in the thread with 10,982 posts, but the ATS search engine isn't very robust. Thanks for replying so informatively and succinctly.

A pleasure! I've got some interesting things to talk about in the next few days. I'm currently deep in studying the growth trends for this virus and will be making some predictions based upon the growing figures and vectors using current data.

For example, future infection rates and when we're likely to hit certain milestones, and when it is likely that certain countries might see quarantine situations. It is all wildly speculative and will need to be taken with giant pinches of salt, but should be interesting non the less.

I'll be wanting to pick the brains of the peeps in here too to help with the effort. Anyway, more on this tomorrow. I'm still doing the ground work!

They changed it from nCov-19 to this for some reason, obfuscation and sowing confusion?

(COVID-19)

Virus
severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2
(SARS-CoV-2)

Thoughts? ..........

I think were within this week and into the next watching this thing explode on the west and east coast........

From what were seeing, its within the period that people actually are bad enough to go to the hospital, which means they have been spreading it for at least a week.......

IF you retro that.........were looking at thousands ..........

I know 8k are under observations in california alone , from what the documentaiton says........and the CDC

But my hunch is this has been in the US at least a month........

Yeah, that is my thinking with all countries. I kind of get the feeling that the super power of this virus is its ability to spread quite a bit before it manifests. If true, then this will become obvious in a couple of weeks time. We shall see!

(DISCLAIMER - THIS IS WILD SPECULATION AND NOT A FACT... lest I get in trouble for making things up!)

OK...now that you've verified it as a Disease, your explanation makes tons of sense. Thanks again!

Out of interest, it is sometimes worth checking out terms on Google Trends to see what and when things become viral (excuse the pun) ... here...

GOOGLE TRENDS CORONA & COVID19

You'll notice from the graph that barely anyone is using the Covid19 name.
