Yeah. They can't all be Gone With The Wind can they?

Really donny? No good movies since the thirties?

But if TV got academy awards he'd be a shoe in. Best comedy.
Except it's not all that funny either.

First off, I thought it was spelled, "Djingo" and it won awards in 2012.

Did South Korea already do a remake about a former slave as a bounty hunter?

Slavery... in Korea?

You know they aren't the 'free world'.

Trump loves America for the wrong reasons. A primitive idea of nationality fit for racists and Nazis.

America is loved for its principles of freedom, democracy, justice, and fair play... All the things he doesn’t practice, believe in or respect.

The Academy Awards has nominated foreign films numerous times since the 30's for best picture... recently Babel and Crouching Tiger. See link above.

Academy Awards have always been politically/ culturally immorally motivated.

Edit: Actually that link lists all categories, shows how stupid people are going off the President's tweet instead of knowing the actual TRUTH! 100's of nominations and awards to foreign films outside of the foreign film category for decades!

Is that how he chooses what to grip about?
I thought it was because Brad mentioned impeachment.
His skin is so thin it he had a soul it would be visible.

But the Academy isn't supposed to pick the most popular movie in America. If that were the case Endgame would've won. But it wasn't even nominated. Because the award is supposed to go to the best film. Period.

Also, Joker was mediocre at best. It felt like a film where they just tried to check boxes to make it artsy. It still came across as just another soulless, overproduced, piece of tripe that Hollywood has become known for. If it wasn't for the controversy I doubt it would even be in the running.

Uncut Gems or Knives Out were way more deserving for the nod.

Art is opinion, so there's that.

But that being said...you cannot be surprised that Americans (who are the big money purveyors of this art) aren't shocked that a film they'd never heard of, and is foreign language, won the award. Few can confirm or deny if its the best film period, because no one who viewed the awards had even seen it.

I saw all the films.

Didn't watch the awards.

Parasite and Jojo Rabbit were deserving.

I'm surprised to find out Joker was even nominated for something. I mean, another re-hash of a Batman villain backstory isn't sparklingly original (and Heath Ledger's Joker was more on character, insane and threatening).

Trump hates it when Hollywood weighs in on politics when it's against him. Now he's weighing in on Hollywood. Pot calling kettle black? To be fair everyone has an opinion and is free to express themselves. First amendment and all...

Just like his racist and misogynistic remarks, Trump's jingoistic comments shouldn't come as any surprise--even with something as goofy as the Oscars.

He'd likely be gushing with praises if the best picture award went to a flick about the 2-bit despots he admires so much:

We import more from Korea than we export to them by several billion dollars. So clearly we're getting quite a bit from them.

That means they are making more money from us than we are from them.

Another?

The Batman franchise may have focused their antagonist agenda on Joker...but this is his only "backstory" put on the big screen.

And it was a masterful performance.

'The Killing Joke (animated)' - 'The Clown Prince' and all the versions of Joker in all the DC universe Batman films. Even Leto's Joker was more in character.

Sorry, I thought that this Joker film was similar to so many 'guy on the edge of insanity' films and omitted many parts of the 'classic' Joker attributes. It was, except for a few cross references and dropped names, generic.

You’ll probably have to define jingoism in the OP if you want anyone around here to answer that part.

Sorry, so funny I just had to stick a big fat icon in!

For the OP, Just about everything thing that Trump says is unwarranted, none more so than the MAGA meme...remember that!

not at all the same
not surprised you would attempt to lump them all together tho, those who misunderstand the concept usually do

Let's review the choices:
Parasite - Already covered. Too foreign. No one likes subtitles. Not MAGA enough.

I agree, it was a really bad year for Hollywood, just about all those moves didn't interest me very much. I watched a few on cable and was not impressed. As to Parasite, all one needs to say is WHO? Personally I think it missed the mark of trying to portray the evils of a capitalistic world when they actually showed the rich Parks coming out as the generous nice group and the poor Kim's ended up being the villains.

This movie just fit in well with the rich socialist Hollywood while suggesting the Parks are nice because they are rich and being nice is a rich luxury and suggesting the Kim's horrible ethics are just a by product of a dog eat dog capitalist world.

Right time for the right story line, but this movie will go down as a clunker looking back on 2019.
