So this should be an interesting thread.

Earlier this month at the Academy Awards the prestigious Best Picture award was given to a foreign film for the first time in history. The film in question was Parasite, a South Korean dark comedy. On top of taking the top award, Parasite also brought home Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature.

Fast forward to earlier this week when Trump made these comments at a rally in Colorado:

“By the way, how bad were the Academy Awards this year?”

“The winner is a movie from South Korea. What the hell was that all about? We’ve got enough problems with South Korea, with trade. And after all that, they give them best movie of the year?”

While the Academy has done a lot of dumb things in the past, I feel like they actually got things right this year. Parasite was hands down the best movie of the year. The fact that Trump tries to discredit it because of its country of origin screams of Jingoism.

The studio behind Parasite has not let Trump have the last word. In response to his comments they have stated:

Understandable, he can't read.

Were Trump's comments warranted? If so, why? What your thoughts on the clap back?

You’ll probably have to define jingoism in the OP if you want anyone around here to answer that part.

Or ... American movies sucked so bad we had to go to foreign films to find our winner. And let's get real, the US made some real turkeys this year. Hollywood is more concerned with being woke than it is with telling good stories.

A foreign film has to win when our own can't do more than make their movies diverse and woke schlock that forgot it needs a plot in order to be a film. It would have been a travesty to award an American film like that as the best.

So ... what is up with that? An American Awards show with a category for foreign films especially awarded a foreign film as best because all the American films sucked *that* badly. To me it looks like Hollywood has lost their way when they can't even make good art films.

Let's review the choices:
Parasite - Already covered. Too foreign. No one likes subtitles. Not MAGA enough.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood - Brad Pitt is awful. Really terrible. Hate him. Hollyweird is terrible, really terrible.
The Irishman - Pacino and De Niro are both Libs, really big Libs. Hated it.
JoJo Rabbit - Kid was mean to one of the greatest leaders of all time. Awful, awful film.
Joker - I don't like people who have more clownish skin than me. Really bad. So bad.
Ford v Ferrari - Ford moved their plants to Mexico. I rooted for Ferrari. Truly bad film.
Little Women - Okay film, I wanted to grab them all.
Marriage Story - Totally unrealistic. The husband wasn't cheating with porn stars. So fake.
1917 - Fake news. We won the war. This wasn't shown. Biased history.

To be fair, I would argue that there have been many years that a foreign film deserved to win and weren't even nominated.

I do believe that Parasite's win is a condemnation of Hollywood. But not because of politics. I mean Joker was probably the least deserving movie to be nominated and that was a film embraced by the alt-Right.

The problem with Hollywood is that they put all their money behind flashy blockbusters that lack substance. The studios don't take risks anymore. And while it makes sense from a business view, it's sad from an artistic view.

The fact that the President is slamming the hands down best movie because it's foreign makes things even worse.

Trump doesn't understand art because it's not about winning. It's about appreciating someone else's work and vision. It's awesome that a foreign film won. Why do things have to be this country vs that country?

Definitely jingoist!

If anything, Hollywood sucks due to unfettered capitalism. As a studio is makes more sense to put all your money behind a shallow movie that will make you $1 billion than it does to an arthouse masterpiece.

Countries like South Korea, China, India, France, Sweden, Japan, etc have been killing it for a long time. While it's great that a foreign film finally won Best Picture, I'm honestly amazed it was the only foreign film nominated.

"jingoist" is a bit of an overstatement. I think that the majority of people were left scratching their heads over the Parasite thing. I mean, the Joker was fantastic. A crowning moment in Phoenix's career. It was seen very widely in the US. Parasite was not.

The reality is that it indicates that the Academy may be out of step with what Americans want. This selection seems to indicate it. Another reality may be that Hollywood is making terrible films...but like i said, the Joker was in the field and is as good a movie as I have ever seen.

Trump wondering what is going on there, that isn't extreme. Its a ridiculous assertion.

Lol. Who would have thought that the President of the United States would be pro America. Hollywood is not good enough to win it.

Foolish comment made by the best choice for President. I can live with it.
All the best movies I’ve seen lately have been subtitles. Foreign Films don’t seem to follow the same regurgitated crap Hollywood puts out. Although Joker and Once upon were great.

Hang on.

British films have won a fair few Oscars over the years, and they are " foreign "

I think what you actually mean is a " foreign language film "

In saying that, British films could be classed as " foreign language " as some Americans say they can't understand what we are saying.

We import more from Korea than we export to them by several billion dollars. So clearly we're getting quite a bit from them.

First off, I thought it was spelled, "Djingo" and it won awards in 2012.

Did South Korea already do a remake about a former slave as a bounty hunter?

Yes, it starred PSY.

But the Academy isn't supposed to pick the most popular movie in America. If that were the case Endgame would've won. But it wasn't even nominated. Because the award is supposed to go to the best film. Period.

Also, Joker was mediocre at best. It felt like a film where they just tried to check boxes to make it artsy. It still came across as just another soulless, overproduced, piece of tripe that Hollywood has become known for. If it wasn't for the controversy I doubt it would even be in the running.

Uncut Gems or Knives Out were way more deserving for the nod.
