I have been in the military and seen quite a few (new) comrads getting tear (or worse) gas into their eyes, because their masks were not tight due to their beards. :-)

About public announcements, it is a matter of how to interpret them. Let's take, for example, the german RKI (a sort of german CDC) announcement from yesterday:
"Vom Robert Koch-Institut (RKI) hieß es, Ziel in Deutschland sei es, eine Erkrankungswelle hinauszuzögern, um zu vermeiden, dass die Covid-19- und die derzeitige Grippewelle zusammenfallen."

in english:

"The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) said that the goal in Germany was to delay a wave of illness in order to prevent the Covid-19 and the current flu waves from coinciding."

and in single-speak (the opposite to "double-speak"):

"The infection will spread and engulf Germany. We know it will, but we do not have the power to address this infection AND the seasonal flu at the same time. Therefore, we will do our best to delay the COVID-19 in order to have then the medical facilities for the infected clear from flu patients."

The best way to delay is to not test at all or only people with symptoms.
The german insurance will, for example pay for a COVIC-Test only when one has symptoms AND has been to China OR in contact with one already infected ... else one has to pay the test oneself at the rate 59.90€ per test (at least 2 will be needed), that is about 60 USD/UKP.
Another way is, for example, to close schools and public buildings and/or tell people to home-quarantine. But _not_ in order to save them from infection altogether, rather for a while until there are enough medical facilites free again.

Honestly, it is comparable to the flu in many ways. It only gets bad in larger outbreaks that overwhelm. As an isolated illness, it is comparable to flu.

But he doesn't have to be an expert himself so long as he's listening to them.

There are even numbers on CFR. It's roughly comparable for a novel strain.

Trumps giving his statement on Coronavirus, few things

1. he's reading from paper - you dont see that often
2. he doesnt look convinced in what he is saying
3. he said China has done a good job and the spread has stopped.

Trump has put Vice President Pence in charge of the Corona Virus issue and will report directly to Trump

makes me feel uneasy. judging from his skin tone today, it looks as if Orange has a resistance effect on the virus

This isn't Trump's area of expertise. He's a businessman. Pence has more experience in dealing with infectious agents as a governor who had MERS in his state on his watch, so even as little experience as that was, it's better than anything Trump has dealt directly with.

They should be speaking from the heart, not what is being read. Sounds so fake.
