Prophets of Deceit (A Study of the Techniques of the American Agitator) is a 1949 book co-written by the German sociologist Leo Löwenthal and the Polish-Jewish scholar Norbert Guterman. The authors analyze and define media appeals specific to American pro-fascist and anti-Semite agitators of the 1940s, such as the application of psychosocial manipulation for political ends. The book details psychological deceits that idealogues or authoritarians commonly used. The techniques are grouped under the headings "Discontent", "The Opponent", "The Movement" and "The Leader".

The authors demonstrate repetitive patterns commonly utilized, such as turning unfocused social discontent towards a targeted enemy. The agitator positions himself as a unifying presence: he is the ideal, the only leader capable of freeing his audience from the perceived enemy. Yet, as the authors demonstrate, he is a shallow person who creates social or racial disharmony, thereby reinforcing that his leadership is needed. The authors believed fascist tendencies in America were at an early stage in the 1940s, but warned a time might come when Americans could and would be "susceptible to ... [the] psychological manipulation" of a rabble rouser.

Contents
The first chapter, ("The Themes of Agitation"), presents samples of an agitator's diatribe, which might be mistaken as "simply ... the raving of a maniac". Generally agitators rely on core motifs, labeled as "Discontent", "The Opponent", "The Movement" and "The Leader".

"Social Malaise", the second chapter, examines how social malaise or discontent can be manipulated by converting perceived problems into grievances. The response to economic grievances is to say that "too much help is being extended to foreign nations”, that not only are "foreigners taking our money, they also threaten our jobs". Political grievances are addressed by the call to action against international "commitments by the United States government [that] jeopardize political liberties." Media outlets are the source of cultural grievances, and labeled "the enemies of the nation", while other enemies are depicted as morally lax, "a crowd of Marxists, refugees, [and] left-wing internationalists."

This is exactly what Trump is doing to a T and the authors of this books fears have come to fruition and half of our country fell for a con job so old there is a 70 year old playbook of its tactics. SAD!

That is the same playbook a majority of politicians use.

They teach stuff like that in politics at prestigious universities...how to control the people.

Even Doctors are taught how to control patients in their final years of medical school, if they did not learn how to control patients and make them believe they were helping them they would not have much business. Same goes for people who run big corporations and city managers, they are taught to get what they want to get accomplished.

I think Trump is using the government/econ highschool textbooks that we were taught with in the late sixties to early seventies.

Little information about both authors - not at all surprising, Frankfurt school and Marxist leanings. Of course they would see american Right wing political sensibilities in that way.

Looked up both in Wiki:

Leo Löwenthal (German: [ˈløːvn̩taːl]; 3 November 1900 – 21 January 1993) was a German sociologist and philosopher usually associated with the Frankfurt School.

Norbert Guterman (1900–1984) was a scholar, and translator of scholarly and literary works from French, Polish and Latin into English. His translations were remarkable for their range of subject matter and high quality.[citation needed]

Born in Warsaw, Guterman attended the University of Warsaw, where he studied psychology. He moved to Paris to study at the Sorbonne, where he continued his studies in psychology, receiving degrees in 1922 and 1923.[1]

In the 1930s, Guterman worked closely with French Marxist theorist Henri Lefebvre in popularizing the Marxist notions of alienation and mystification. He published translations of Marx's early works, which were often the first publications of these works in any language.[2]

Guterman, who was Jewish, moved to the United States in 1933, where he took on translation work for the Monthly Review, eventually becoming an editor. He later converted to Hassidic Judaism.[3] In 1936 he became an associate member of the Institute for Social Research on the recommendation of Max Horkheimer who held a great deal of respect for him.[1] In 1949 he co-published Prophets of Deceit with Leo Löwenthal.[4]

His papers are kept in the Butler Library of Columbia University.[3]

And that makes the book less true because...?

It's a copy of Trump's entire platform and persona. I don't care who wrote it. Thats undeniable.

"I'll take 'give me an example of liberal projectionism' for $500, Alex"

Here's a little bit of fun - close your eyes, put OBAMA in your head, then re-read your 'prophets of doom' - you fools are still brainwashed by what that viper spewed.

You ain't seen nothing yet.

And remember:

The major premise for tactics is the development of operations that will maintain a constant pressure upon the opposition
– Saul Alinsky, “Rules for Radicals”

Accuse your enemy of what you are doing, as you are doing it to create confusion.
– Marxist maxim

Trump IS America at this point so his fate is our fate. Trump and his cult followers cannot separate their identities from their fantasy view of what America is. Which is everything they are. White, Christian, Conservative Capitalist. Which is why anything that is not those things becomes a threat to America when it's really just a threat to their perceived superiority status in the social hierarchy. Their self worth was destroyed in childhood so they've attached who they are to this "American" identity that allows them to believe they are superior. Which is why 8 years of a black man in office felt like such torture to them. It was a daily reminder that they are not superior to anyone and they do not own America. Trump is psychological payback for that torture they suffered.

This quote from Lyndon B. Johnson sums it up quite nicely.

"If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." -LBJ

A con job? The USA is improving in everything the 3 years Trump has been in office. The people have noticed. Jobs, wages, economy, all booming.

Biden, Bernie, etc have been in elected office for decades and haven't fixed anything.

Bernie's only ever had 3 bills he introduced passed into law, and two of them are just to rename a POST OFFICE!!!! The dude is completely worthless.

S.893 Introduced 5/8/13. The Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2013 which became law in November 2013

S.885 Introduced 5/7/13. A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 35 Park Street in Danville, Vermont, as the “Thaddeus Stevens Post Office” became law in November 2014.

H.R.5245 Introduced 4/27/06. To designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 1 Marble Street in Fair Haven, Vermont, as the “Matthew Lyon Post Office Building” became law in August 2006.

I missed where Obama talked about the good old days, blamed foreigners, said the press was the enemy, claimed that he alone could fix our countries problems, claimed to be a defender of Christianity, stoked racial division, etc. Nice try though.
