Captain Bering Joy is about as man as man can be! Captain Joy makes today's leaders and politicians look like infants. Captain Joy makes John Wayne look like a teenager.

A bit of a slow start but the ending is worth every minute!

You can watch it free online off of archive.org:

Down To The Sea In Ships (1949 Film)

If you want to see something really amazing just watch the sequence where the crew harpoons a giant sperm whale at 59:00 mark. The scene is just amazing what happens next!

en.wikipedia.org...(1949_film)

Here's the 1922 silent version of the film kind of hard to watch. I think both versions harpoon real whales in the filming:

Many old rated g movies would be rated pg today.
Funny thing is that you can get away with so much more in films now than in the past.

I for one miss the feel of movies from the 40s and 50s.
Maybe it’s the innocence they seem to possess.

They don't make them like they used to, nowadays it's cardboard cutout actors, crap scripts and multi-million dollar special effects, and they have the audacity to call it a movie, not one of them matches up to the classics:

Metropolis (1927)

M (1931)

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920)

The Phantom Carriage (1921)

The Last Laugh (1924)

Faust(1926)

Nosferatu(1922)

Grand Illusion (1937)

BLOODY SMALL SPERM WHALE

59.00: - a sailor is on the bow where here harpoons a DOLPHIN.

They say fresh meat for all hands after weeks of salt horse.

I saw this film - Man of Arran - for the first time last week and thought it was stunning.

youtu.be...

The Arran Isles are off the West Coast of Ireland, no more land before America.

The film is a documentary from 1934, shot in black and white, and took 2 years to make.

Sounds super dull, but the photography is amazing and the story line riveting.

The scene where 5 or 6 men in a rowing boat sneak up on, and spear , a Basking Shark is my favourite.
