The Wuhan Coronavirus is in its infancy, tens of millions are quarantined, and hospitals are currently being built specifically for it. Even the (probably vastly under-) reported cases continue to expand. It may not turn into a massive global pandemic, but it sure has planted some firm roots.

They don't need to. Concurrent pandemic illnesses could mean over-burdened healthcare systems, reduced supplies (of all kinds), crashing economies (with all the problems related to such), and people dying of illnesses which would be imminently treatable if only they could be treated.

We already know 2019 Novel Coronavirus is happening concurrent with "flu season" - adding a massively lethal H5N1 into a struggling populace / healthcare system could be tragic. Hopefully transmission of both is stemmed by behaviors (staying home, masks, careful sanitization & contact reduction, etc.)

Eventually, masks will wear out their effectiveness and people will need to venture out for supplies anyway. In many parts of China, masks have long sold out.

I was thinking the same thing actually. Look at it this way, you have a highly contagious virus, with a low mortality rate, that weakens the immune system(Wuflu). Then you have a low contagious virus, with a High Mortality, H5N1. Both have the same initial symptoms. What do you think sick people do, when their really sick. (Go to the Hospital.) You have massive populations going to hospitals because Wuflu, while at the same time, you have people with H5N1 going to the same hospital. The H5N1 has a controlled population to breed in, in the hospitals, as it takes several days for you to come back positive for H1N5. That means H5N1 is spreading to the Patients, Nurses, Doctors, staff, etc, killing 60% while the government is forced to send in ill trained military to care for the population. Military gets sick with one or the other, eventually leading to H5N1 infecting them due to weakened immune response. People start dropping like flies, stop going to hospitals, flee the area spreading both in their wake. Nobody knows who has H5N1 or Wuflu, so military goes nuts enforcing the quarantines. Commerce comes to a stand still, food doesn't get delivered, people are forced to fight military, military shoots on sight. Social order breaks down, economy breaks down, trade breaks down. The world sends help, however they get sick too. China quarantined, troops moved to their borders (Russua, etc.) China sends troops to borders to counter. Troops start getting sick their, and try to get out. Russians, etc shoot troops, hot war develops, next thing you know they are lobbing nukes at each other. China, NK, and Russia destroyed. A vaccine miraculous comes out, saves Europe and the west. America maintains dominance, Russia needs help rebuilding, leans to EU. China leans to the USA. EU engulfs Russia, China becomes USA B&*(tch. American dominance is maintained, and Western control is maintained. Its even better if the virus spreads to SE Asia, and into the middle east. This forces Africa to lean toward EU. American Dominance in Middle East is increased, and it gives India ammo to assert control in SE Asia forming a new block. India in SE Asia, EU in Africa and Russia. USA in China and the middle east. India gets land to feed their population. EU gets resources from Africa and Russia. America gets decent population centers (China) and Resources (Rare Earth- China and Oil in the middle east) mmm. I wonder if it was orchastrated. Sounds like a good plan, only leaves the USA to deal with Iran which by then has no allies and should be weakened by the flu's.

(All this would make for a good story I was thinking about.)

Viral mutation 101....two different viruses (H5N1 and 2019 nCoV) infect the same cell and swap a bit of RNA- and you wind up with a viral mutation. The nCoV2019 has already mutated once. Just a matter of time until it infects a host with a different viral illness and mutates again.

I was concerned about the five 2019nCoV cases in the UAE because MERS (a coronavirus with a much higher mortality rate) still exists in that region. The thought of MERS (deadly but not easily transmitted) and 2019 nCoV ( lower mortality - easily transmitted) which are both coronaviruses co-mingling in the same host is terrifying.

Hopefully the H5N1 and 2019 nCoV are structurally different enough to where the risk of RNA swapping is a bit lower.

This is a terrible virus to control world populations though considering plagues of the past might've wiped out up to 60% of populations they came in contact with. Minor setbacks in the grand scheme of things, we kept on growing. Today we're growing at about 1% per year. We could probably double the deaths of Spanish flu after WWI and still have worldwide population growth.

If you want to control numbers fast the best way is to starve em out, probably with a nuclear winter scenario. It's kinda hard to have and keep children when everyone's malnourished and life/food is becoming rarer and rarer.

It seems from history though that massive losses of population tended to create good scenarios for those left to prosper. You can charge whatever the hell you want if you're the only one plowing the field... Or atleast demand a bit more salt, a man's worth a lot more now you see?

Nah. There's a lot more to population control than the ethics of it, then again we are slowly being replaced by machines so who knows? Maybe we are more than just replaceable.
