The other day a large group stormed grand central station with the message , no more police, we want free subways.

Hard to make up, but people were getting pissed about the constant fare hikes and it turned out that a major loss in revenue were from people jumping the turnstiles

So they add a bunch of police to patrol the area and its getting the people who jump these turnstiles pissed off...they believe they dont have to pay.

One lady held the turnstile open for 30min letting people freely pass claiming taxes already pay for the trains, why do they need money from fares?

It's also racist since brown and black people are arrested for this more often then whites.

Are free trains something the citzens should be given or is this just newly arrived 3rd worlders demanding free socialist programs?

I hate the word free when it comes to government or life in general. It is basically a lie. Yet people keep using it. Taxes pay for a lot of things but it is never enough. You need a ride then you have to pay, otherwise you can hitchhike.

Well, that's a new one. I understand people getting annoyed with price hikes, but free transit? Do these people realize how much money it takes to build, operate and maintain these systems?

These people are completely out of touch with reality.

Not mentioned much any more is the gap between tax payers and non tax payers

Under Obama, in ny, we were seeing schools applying for extra federal grants that have never asked for assistance before.

You just dont go from never asking for federal grants to having more then half of schools in the area asking within 4 years.

So they did a study and the results were that tax payers could no longer afford what the school wants to offer through school tax alone.

So why for hundreds of years the communities school tax was efficient?
The study said that never before have schools, like never in the history of the schools have had more students to care, then what the community was giving in school tax.

It turned out something like 13 kids in a classroom of 25 had relatives contributing to school tax.
There was a huge spike in single resident homes that were housing 3 families.
And having a ratio of 1 residents school tax but with 3 large families of up to 9 children was impossible to fund.

Same goes for roads and many other infrastructures maintained with tax dollars.
More people use these things today then there are tax payers to keep up its maintenance or make advancements.

It's was a slow leaching of society

There is a school a few blocks from where I live. The entrance is all marble lined. It is about 20 feet wide by 25 feet tall. I know marble isn't cheap. I feel money like this could be better spent. Last time I checked marble isn't a good teacher.

How long ago was this school built?
I'll bet is wasn't in the last 10 years.

A lot of pretentious people wants to live in NYC for free. I worked in NYC years ago and that expensive city sucks, smell like pee every corner, rats all over and pushy people. But they love it.

I wouldn't live there even if they give me free rides.

They don't like police because they have a tendency to do bad things.

Free, deserve, should...
Words used by people that don't understand the meaning and value of hard work.

Cities are doomed, we are at 3 or 4 generations removed from times where just the acquisition of food and water was still an effort for most people.

There was a quantitative value for things based on understanding.

these people obviously have no concept of what public transit costs to operate. according to the wall street journal the MTA's operating budget is $16 BILLION, with just over 1/2 of that coming from fares and tolls. that means to fully tax fund the system would mean needing at least $8 BILLION more needing to be taxed out of the people of New York a year (and like everything else steadily climbing every year), to pay for it. so do these people want to see themselves having to pay even more tax? but then again, i suspect if you look at those protesting, they pay very little to no taxes in the first place. so it's no skin off their backs. and instead like the communist, democrats so many people are in New York (they gave us the idiot, communist AOC after all), they expect the "rich" to pay for it all. yet more FREE STUFF.

Just over half of the MTA’s $16 billion operating budget comes from fares and tolls. For the past decade, the MTA has instituted fare and toll increases every two years, subject to public hearings and an MTA board vote, with a target raise of 4%.
www.wsj.com...

the truth of the matter is that public transit is not anywhere near efficient. i know that when i was living in a big city even with the tax money spent on public transit, unless i was going a long distance (like across the entire city), it was cheaper to drive an old, fuel inefficient van, then to take public transit. and it is also very time inefficient taking far longer to take public transit than to drive. making driving even more worthwhile. and having lived in a big city where "public transit" like buses is all privately owned and operated, with no tax money involved. in order to keep operating within the fares they are allowed to collect, and keeping it affordable, creates interesting issues. things like proper maintenance are not done, because they don't make enough to do so. which of course means that most buses pour out clouds of black smoke, and may have things such as faulty brakes as well as being pretty much jury rigged to keep them running.

Imagine thousands protesting for clean drinking water and not 1 knowing how to produce it.

We might be getting into dangerous times where people will need basic items of survival and have no idea how to obtain it.

Yes I remember something like this happened in Baltimore after the riots.
The police shot some black guy and Baltimore rioted and said they didn’t trust the police and wanted less police. The cops caved and less cops patrolled the streets after to make arrests on anyone of color. Hilariously a year later they cried about the crime wave that resulted from the absence of the police.

Ps:I’m not saying the cop that shot the black guy was innocent or justified in the shooting. I’m not saying the riots after had been wrong. However be careful what you wish for you just might get it! Also some community awareness goes a long way

I grew up in NYC in the 1970's & 80's.. I remember what the subway was like when NYPD wasn't allowed down there (unless they were chasing someone) and the Transit Authority had their own police... who were as common as an alligator in the sewer..

If you used the subway during rush hour, it was a 50-50 chance you'd either see someone get robbed, or get robbed yourself.

If you used the subway when it wasn't rush hour.. you were taking your life in your own hands.

New York City would regularly have between 1000-2000 murders a year (capped out at just over 2000).. and each year between 250-500 of them happened on the subway. Hundreds of rapes happened on the subways every year.. tens of thousands of robberies.. gangs going around beating people at random.. For a time they were warning people of a gang whose initiation was for a kid to go on the subway and cut a piece of someone's ear off just before the train doors close... It was a literal nightmare. And I haven't even touched on all the fires that happened, both arsons and equipment failures, because fares were so cheap (fifty to 75 cents throughout the 1980's) the system was vastly underfunded and the didn't bother cleaning up garbage that would accumulate in the tunnels.

I left New York in November. If that's what these idiots want, let them have it. They'll deserve what they get.

What they're doing and asking is totally wrong. Asking for free stuff and no police is a recipe for disaster.

However that's one side of the story, the other side we need to look hard at, is how well the finances of the NYC subway are being managed, what's the level of the corruption of the city's subway officials, what's the role of the unions in all of these financial problems, etc?! And I have my doubts in all of the above.

I remember around 2003 the NYC subway's monthly pass was about $75, now about $130. Bridge/tunnel tolls into the city in 2003 were $4, now $16. And we're not seeing any changes! So first things first, investigate where all the city's subway money is going, while at same time preventing the abuses of the system.

My motto is "where's a will, there's a way!"

all this whining for nothing, two simple fixes. Either shut down the Subways and let them fare on the surface or remove the traditional turn stalll system and place a full wall with hydraulic doors that open to fee, cant hold them open. If your afraid of an idiot hurting them selves then they can do like whats at the southern border pedestrian crossing, a circular entrance. simple no problem.

Sure. Cut the fares and when the system runs out of operation funds, it shuts down.

Lesson learned.

A lot of subway stations have those circular turnstiles already.

Who cares what the want? Let the retards have it. Just as soon as NYC becomes it's own entity and the rest of the state of NY doesn't need to fund their bs. The entire rest of this state isn't represented accurately because our votes don't matter, we'll just be overridden by that hellhole voting in whoever promises more tax breaks and yep... Free crap.
