Proposed bill aims to take Apple to task over end to end encryption

Fresh off Attorney General Bill Barr losing his mind over Apple’s inability to break into the Pensacola NAS shooter’s iPhones, a new bill aimed at doing an end-run around CALEA is being floated by Lindsey Graham. In summary, under CALEA communications providers are required to disclose certain things to law enforcement (namely, learning their systems are being used for CP purposes) but are not required to provide law enforcement with a built in “back door access” point to their systems. Under the guise of combatting CP, Graham’s proposed bill would change that. End to end encryption would now be a problem for companies like Apple, but worry not: the bill would set up a commission to define “best practices” and decide how companies should give LE their back door access.

Bear in mind, folks, that agencies like the FBI have been chafing under CALEA since it was passed. They believe that the law gives too much weight to your privacy, and that they can of course be trusted to totally never ever abuse the incredible power that would come from inhibited encryption coupled with a means to easily bypass your personal privacy and security.

The bottom line is that rather than amending and enforcing CALEA Graham, and likely Barr, want to create a new law the circumvent the protections of CALEA, and are happy to use the “think of the children!” tactic to do so. Yes, CP peddlers and terrorists use iPhones. So do millions and millions of people who are neither of those things. If you trust the same government that allowed the NSA to hoover up your email metadata to not do the same thing with this bill....

They really do miss the good old days when everything the average person knew about the world they lived in was fed to them through the TV wire, huh?

Everything that can be used as a means to an end.

This is how the population is controlled, and tptb stay in control. It won't be long until people are afraid to speak out against wrongdoing due to this enabling authorities to find any little reason to discredit someone. It won't be long until they are remotely planting incriminating evidence just to throw opposition into holding cells. This in conjunction with deepfake videos will enable anyone to be falsely accused and locked up.

No one is going to know what truth is in the future. Hell, it can already be a challenge today.

Wait till they get an accurate system that can pull memories. They'll find laws that give them the right to get in there.

Some places they can get your DNA for alleged misdemeanors. This is what we've come to.

It's just a matter of time before someone gets the presidency, who's evecutive power keeps getting bumped up, and makes Obama look like a boyscout.

This is death by a thousand cuts. There is already a growing trend on how we're supposed to think and act. Offensive today is illegal tomorrow. But people keep letting it happen because they allow all those in power to scare them into thinking this is all for our good.

I think the big takeoff is the following.

Corporations are allowed to express emmenant domain with no recourse, and even police at state and local level using your tax dollars to tell you that you can't even protest. They can dodge paying taxes. They walk free when proved they have wrecked economies and almost brought it all down.

But the very few trying to protect your privacy aren't allowed to. That's where the free market stops.

Do they get in trouble for data breaches, even some they've gained through dodgy means? Nope.

This is what corruption looks like.

That'll be the day. He's been firmly lodged in one government position or another since the 90s. That's the main problem with these people. No term limits. There shouldn't be any such thing as a career politician. If we'd had the same president since the year 2003, people would pretty much see him as a dictator.

There is a view that the main aim of this is to give the spooks a way of producing data at court cases with some sort of legal paper trail.

The spooks probably can intercept and decode most things but when asked how they did it they start to get rather shy and thus the ability to produce a nice bit of court paper with a signature will make things easier.

Putting a backdoor would never work as people will look for it and it will be found and also the very people who you want to know what they're doing wont use the apps thus making it a waste of time for everyone as i'm sure theres spooks across the world banging their heads on desks wishing the politicians would stop making so much noise as it disturbs their peace.
