On a serious note, I am pretty sure the US is pretty well prepared but if this spreads like in China, can we expect measures to be like in China? Whole cities on lockdown etc..

Peace

I worked in disaster planning for public health. I'd be less worried about quarantine in urban areas than I would about shortages of medical personnel and supplies, especially with something that has no vaccines. If the infection rate is as high as the leaks are saying a place like New York could explode in a month. Then, maybe quarantine. I think it's a very very long shot.

The more severe China is the better for us. This is the first time I've been thankful China has an iron fist.

I get the concern, but the quarantining of these people is to prevent an outbreak. If Fort Riley in Kansas had been quarantined at the start of the outbreak there it has been theorized that the Spanish Flu wouldn't have spread through out the US as quickly (if not the world). So while it seems draconian (because it kind of is) limiting exposure of possibly affected individuals also limits the possibility of the virus spreading past the core group.

Sadly this is the kind of law that can be used to control a population by either limiting movement, or by force restricting possible groups of people that the local governments don't like (imagine if this gets worse by election day). On the other hand if the possible affected people are not quarantined from the population, then fear and desire for governmental over control might be demanded by the vocal minority (again imagine election day if this isn't under control by then)

I would rather have a small group of people quarantined to protect the population, then allow fearmongers to use the public spread of the virus to force laws that will control the entirety of the population. It's times like this were we have to ask the question:
"which of the two evils better protects the lives and the freedoms better?"

At least having a small group of people under quarantine still allows for the majority of people to keep the power brokers in check.

lots of people would be cool with the whole quarantine detention thing, right up until the moment it affected them.

Whatever happened to those shadowy FEMA camps with signs in Arabic during the Obama administration that were going to be used to round up Americans for some kind of takeover?

I remember watching YouTube videos about it.

Glad to see someone else had the same thought. FEMA camps is something that crossed my mind this week.

I think that is one of the options the government might implement, but I also think it won't help. The symptoms don't show up during the early stages, so by the time they send a person to the camp, that person already infected others. It's unstoppable.

It still can be used as an excuse. Remember Agenda 21. If you didn't know about it, have a read :

Just want to add this video. Guess who was there speaking about Agenda 21 :

It was 2008 or somewhere around that time and somebody posted about a million buck worth of plastic coffin liners being stored by the government (this hoax would resurface in 2014 with Ebola) but it spun out of control and people were noticing military convoys and cryptical roadsigns that were for military use to direct troops etc..

like I said....good times

I believe it was concluded that a company named Vantage stored these "coffins" on leased land in Madison, Georgia because they simply could be stored outdoors...

Madison, GA (which I have not personally seen), and Covington, Ga, which are still there.

I live 20 mins from both.

Let's say you get infected. Then you go to the forest. Someone soon will ask where you are, police notified and your family in trouble. Then they find you and see you're infected. They'll take your family too and get them in quarantine. NOPE, bad idea.

Best to do is stay at home. Call sick and treat yourself.

Well, 'FEMA camps' is kind of a metaphor. Call them what you want. Forced detainment against one's will.

The minute military trucks come rolling down our road to round people up they're going to have hell of a lot more to worry about than novelvirus!

I don't think you are taking this nearly seriously enough.

Holding someone for two weeks to stop the spread of it to potentially thousands - which equates to hundreds of deaths, seems like a pretty reasonable response to me.

I do remember that!

I live in Cali, and when I heard the news that they were being brought here, I was a bit worried. If they were kept in comfortable safe quarantine, for a maximum of 3 weeks, I think I will be ok with that. If its much longer than that..... No way!

I did see that they some specialists do believe this was engineered now, after close inspection. Thats another concern, especially if it wasnt just to be made into a vaccine.

Self quarantine- might as well drop them off in the food court at the local mall.

Several hundred years ago, it wasn't wrong to take someone who was a detriment to your community and dump them into a nearby bog.
Now we've got some science telling us that these people are potentially infected with a modern plague- The kind of thing that could ruin a society.

All we're going to do is send them to their respective communities and ask them nicely to stay away from others for a bit.

Of course, even if they do, the people they live with are free to come and go as they please- potentially getting infected by this plague that we don't quite understand.... and they can go to bars. They can go to restaurants. They get to go to work- maybe as a line cook, a waitress, a bank teller.... Maybe they're the person that makes the bed at your local hotel.
As I've heard it, a person can be sick with this plague for several weeks before experiencing symptoms.

If this turns out to be an actual problem (It probably isn't the next big plague)... but IF- then what the hell are we doing?
Sure, stay at home. Or go to work and lie, I guess.
Infect a hundred people a day with your virus, in whatever town you happen to live in.

IMO, if you live in a big city, you deserve the next plague.
I don't think random strangers that happen to pass through your town deserve the same.
I've had jobs send me all over this country, and I'll never willingly leave my home state again- if California sank into the ocean I'd applaud the loss.
If our government brings the next black plague to my doorstep, I'll be quite irate.

Heres a new headline from Yahoo:

A coronavirus case has been confirmed in the San Francisco Bay Area near Silicon Valley — a man who recently returned from Wuhan and Shanghai

Im 80 miles away

If this virus was manufactured, it may not respond like a normal virus. It could be programmed to mutate and not be strictly a person to person contact, it could be spread by anything or just ride the winds of change.

Would you self quarantine? You might. I would. Many would. Not everyone would, and that's the worry. The worry are people like that dude from I think Japan, that got fined 10k for taking meds to reduce his fever, get by the flight checks, and then in Japan, that night.. went to a nightclub. He was tested positive. See, some people are like him.

If everyone actually were responsible and not a-hats, they wouldn't need to do it at all. We could go all Mayberry, and leave a coffee can on the fuel pump while you are out fishing.
