so i was thinking about drones and how much they rely on their EO to fly

instead of shooting super expencive missiles or fighters after them why not just blind them with a laser?

it would lower the power requirement to disable the aircraft and it would be a pretty small and cheep unit(other than the radar).

OR

you could make a wide beam in the air and use it as a fence of sorts.

you send high alt balloons up with a laser that would shine towards the ground towards a EO or PV sensor and if it the laser were proven you would have at least an idea of where it was coming from, and if you wanted to get fancy you could use a high powered IR ground based laser that would be shot towards some sort of reflectors in the air and if the beam was broken you know where to start looking.

also we have gotten very good at picked up emissions that a jet engine might put out using multi spectral sensors, if you could tune an imaging device for dense water vapor or other exhaust gasses you would be able to fund any aircraft pretty quickly

This is already being done with sensors that pick up dark spots in the ambient RF - if you are referring to finding stealthy aircraft.

Also, sparkling a drone with a laser is just setting the vehicle with that laser up to get nailed.

i guess that makes sense when it somes to the whole laser idea.''

i guess there is enough RF noise either induced or just background to find the holes missing

Might have to look at anti missile defences on Armoured vehicles for ideas...

i know about the RPG system in tanks that try to w= explode a bit to intercept the warhead but ill have to check out the missile defense and other and maybe new tank defenses

Active armour..Soviet Tanks use them a lot..Explosive bricks on turret disperse the shaped charge.....Apparently.....
Most modern anti armour missiles use a top down attack mode to hit the thinner top armour..
Anti radar, laser and optical defences are what people are after..The tricky things are that missiles now come in multiple sensor configurations...
Probably why Hypersonic missiles are a thang now..

well all your new missile would need would be a terahertz imager and maybe an IIR and a image outline database with the pop up maneuver would be devastating

the only way you could blind terahertz sensors would be to flood the battle field with it and im not sure how you would do that with out some sort of anti terahertz emitter missile taking them out.

the future battle field will be very very interesting with aircraft messing with sam systems electronically from a distance to microwave cruise missiles to kill power and other cyber attacks. then there is the actual; fighting field, its getting interesting
