Darker skin people bleach their skin and straighten their hair.... white people tan and try to get kinky hair / bigger lips.

You can't make this sh*t up sometimes.

Actually, some people are getting harmed by using harmful bleaching solutions which are already outlawed.

But I agree with your sentiment for the most part. I don't care about people trying to lighten or darken their skin. It's their skin, they can try and look however they like.

Skin whitening is apparently becoming a thing in parts of Africa, Asia and the United States. It appears to be a prevalent phenomenon amongst black people and East Asian people. This is a concern.

In what ways can society/the world discourage this phenomenon of skin whitening?

Yes, humans are free but interested in your take on this matter nonetheless..

Why is this a concern?

People scar themselves up every day with plastic surgery to get the "look" they want. As already mentioned, people suntan, use make-up, dye their hair, go to the gym, and many other things to get the "look" they want because they don't feel that they look their best for whatever reason.

I don't see this as a problem except maybe SJW's with nothing better to do but find new causes to champion.

If you want a real cause to champion, how about we get kids to stop scarring themselves up with tattoos and big holes in their faces, ears, and god knows wherever else they are creating holes in themselves.

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing, but why do you personally think it's a concern?

Well, it's simple. It's more common for lighter skin to be seen as beautiful than it is for darker skin to be seen as the same. It's all really just opinion since there is no universal standard of beauty.

Yah, well that "fat" thing hasn't lasted. No matter what feminists try and sell you people do not find fat women more attractive than fit women.

So people can try to turn from male to female or mutilate themselves to look like a cat or demon but you draw the line in the Sand at Skin Lightening?

People always want what they aren't. Curly hair people want straight. Brunettes want to be blond.

It is self hate. It is a little more nuanced than comparing to white folks tanning.

Because the lighter the skin, the better the canvas for all the tattoos.

The mental gymnastics people play to cry victim is astounding

Dark skin people lightening skin = tragic and the result of years of oppression

Light skin people wanting to darken their skin = no problem at all

Go look up brown paper bag test and get back to me...

In the black community it is very much rooted in past racism and classism.

Is skin whitening physically harmful?

Darker skinned white women here and some of us try and lighten our skin too.

Age spots/freckles/melasma are something most women try to get rid of.

It's not about being lighter skinned, it's about having a clear, even skin tone.

Which is why a lot of darker skinned women are trying to lighten their skin.

Darker woman have more melanin, which in turn leads to more skin discolorations due to sun damage, acne, hormones, etc...

First line of defense. Always wear sunscreen.

Yes, if you use the harsh chemical bleaches that were popular before they became outlawed.

Try educating yourself. Seriously, Google brown paper bag test and learn about the history of colorism within the black community.

Skin bleaching is far more insidious than trying to get a tan. Yes, I'm sure some white folks tried to be as pasty white as possible but it simply is not a direct comparison nor does it have the same cultural baggage.

Asian women are the ones who do this the most. It's a cultural standard of beauty in their countries. And if it is racism it's against their own race.
