Skin whitening is apparently becoming a thing in parts of Africa, Asia and the United States. It appears to be a prevalent phenomenon amongst black people and East Asian people. This is a concern.

In what ways can society/the world discourage this phenomenon of skin whitening?

Yes, humans are free but interested in your take on this matter nonetheless..

Skin lightening has been a thing for as long as racism has been a thing.

It's very prevalent in India, where the beauty industry constantly barrages girls with advertisements for skin lightening treatments, and the older generation fills girls heads with stories about darker skinned girls never marrying, etc.

It's cultural, and it will never stop unfortunately.

ETA: It's not really just a racism thing, but that's a modern spurce of the trend. It's been a thing forever.

People can't control what they find attractive.
No matter how much the big is beautiful movement tries it can make fatties more attractive than healthier folk.
Same goes for skin and facial features.

Finding the root cause and addressing it usually the best way to solve any problem.

Why is it a concern? Why do you think it needs to stop?

Don't get me wrong... I certainly don't encourage skin whitening. But then I don't really think about it at all...

Light skinned people go so far as to risk skin cancer to darken their skin all of the time

This is very common among white people in the USA for example

Strange no one considers this a problem involving race

In Canada they had to make laws regarding age and tanning beds. Soon it will be illegal to pay for tanning at all.

It is a form of self-hate from being directly and subliminally told you aren't attractive. It is a cultural thing.

I'm not really sure what can be done about it. It took hundreds of years of oppression to get to this point and won't change over night.

I don't see why people shouldn't be able to darken or lighten their skin...change their hair color, wear tinted contact lenses...or even use elevator shoes.

Who really cares?

Not many people seem to be satisfied with what they inherited from nature

and skin whitening was also practiced many years ago by whites apparently

they could never be white enough and the paint and powder they used

contained lead which made them ill.

Skin lightening is just an extension of colouring/relaxing/perming/straightening

hair..........botox, fillers, breast and bum implants......

Time people learned to love themselves the way they are

When are they going to pass a law to prevent nosey people from trying to control trivial aspects of other people's lives?

So there is this phenomenon in which people expose themselves to the sun in order to darken their skin......
It appears to be prevalent amongst the lighter people in the world.
There are even concoctions that when applied to skin assist in this phenomenon of skin darkening.
You have equal concern for such?
