The entire thread premise is pointless. Do you really hate foreigners -that- much, that all tourism, students, business, family visits, weddings, foreign bands, on and on and on.. should be cut off from ever entering our country? Because you DO realize that a virus is not a major concern for immigration into this country.. right?
I don’t that anyone here hates foreigners, bands, students, etc. This should be an International quarantine at least till the epidemic is under control.
The OP is pointing out the obvious... that if Progressives care about national security they should be concerned about illegal immigration as well as infected people entering,

Quarantines must be done very early Before it spreads.

It's too late.

You cannot prevent it's spread when it's everywhere already!

How do y'all not get this?

Its not everywhere. There are five cases in the US. What would you have us do, throw open the borders and ignore it all? At least we can try to stop it from getting worse. One of the main reasons its not worse than it is now is because we can track the potential carriers and the people they had contact with.

You said it yourself - quarantines must be done very early before it spreads. Five US infections IS early and we are trying to control it but some brain dead liberals keep getting in the way...

The borders are wide open. They have been.

In the newspaper today at the gas station it said over 100 cases in over 26 states now.

That means 1000s are all around us. Perhaps millions are incubating it as we speak.

It's a month too late to quarantine.

Even in a worst-case scenario...if every country in the world stayed to itself and let no one out, or in (imagine that nonsense?)... It wouldn't matter. If a deadly virus hits a place and quickly spreads, people will flee. And people will do absolutely anything to get themselves and their families out.

It would take an act of God to keep people confined to just their country to die.

Not really since it appears that alcohol has killed more people than the corona virus

but still borders during pandemics , epidemics should be closed, regardless of how much it affects a countries GDP

we could kill the entire species with one person being selfish .

People who travel through countermeasures should be tried for attempted murder , as they could kill others with their carelessness if infected

As of January 27 there are 5 confirmed cases in the US. The rest are as I described - people that have been in contact with the 5 known cases that are being monitored for signs of infection or whom have travelled to China recently. There are 32 people that have been tested and ruled out, and 73 with test results pending for a total of 110 in 26 states.

This is America. Not a concentration camp.
your not wrong, but doing nothing helps no one. Another alternative I've heard is having a mandatory quarantine period for all international flights. Where all passengers and crew are subjected to a full battery of tests to ensure they are safe to be released into the general populace. If it was made mandatory for all, it would certainly help contain outbreaks like these.

I don't think viruses care about borders. They can enter our country inside an American returning home more easily than being brought in by an illegal crossing over from mexico and if there is an epidemic here it will most assuredly be started by an American host.

How many cases of Ebola were brought to the U.S. by illegals crossing the border?
How many by returning Americans or travelers that came here legally?
The answers are zero and all of them respectively.

Was there similar hysteria during the HIV/AIDs pandemic (which has killed over 75 million people worldwide to date)?

Vroomfondel...you make excellent points.

Enforcing one's borders and NOT letting large amounts of untested, unknown and unfettered masses of people travel from country to country across open borders...can make the difference between an uncontrolled viral crisis spreading in a country...and one which can be controlled.

It's a difference which could save thousands upon thousands of citizens' lives.

Illegal immigration has little to do with the virus outbreak. Or next to nothing really. A temporary travel ban on a country due to an outbreak also has nothing to do whatsoever with laws that might be in place regarding normal or illegal immigration.

I am not terribly worried about a horribly sick person somehow making an on-foot journey of hundreds of miles to then infect a town in Texas or New Mexico, no. Ridiculously low even on my list of worries regarding illegal immigration.

OP point is simply throwing stuff at the wall hoping it sticks. Unless he is advocating for literally -no- visitation, immigration, legal or otherwise, from people of other countries. At which I can only sadly shake my head, if that is the case.

Nonsense, that doesn't even make sense, you are just making crap up now based on nothing. Do you have facts to support your illegal immigrant to outbreak cases and death count theory?

If someone is already sick, they are not going to immigrate to your country. Has there been any major outbreaks of a virus in the U.S. due to Mexican immigrants that has cost us thousands of lives? No. As stated, most pandemics spread quickly by foreign travelers by PLANE or SHIP. Not by a lone Mexican wandering across the border.

Why don't you define open border for us - that would help. Are you suggesting that NO foreign travelers should be allowed.. ever? Or that even business travelers, students, tourists, have to get special authorization to book a flight into the United States? What are you suggesting that would actually impact an outbreak exactly like we are seeing now? Should we also not allow U.S. travelers to visit foreign countries (where they would pick up a virus)?

Need more context than 'open borders can cost thousands of lives due to virus outbreaks.'

Because hiv isn't airborne...

That was a poor argument.

Sorry, but that was one horse# response.

No one said anything about one illegal mexican. The concept is really very simple: either you can track the people entering your country in case of something like this viral outbreak, or you cant. There are only 5 cases right now in the US but there have been a total of 110 suspect. Why do you think that is? Its because we know who the travellers are and who they came in contact with. 5 confirmed cases, 32 who were tested and ruled out, and 73 with test results pending. Now, you tell me: how do propose we track and test unknown carriers who entered illegally? Are you suggesting that no illegal immigrants are Chinese? If so - prove it.

Honestly, its pretty moronic to suggest that an open border with so many unknown quantities is not potentially harmful. No one said these US cases are due to some illegal mexican as you put it. Its just a common sense dialogue on the subject of the thread - how open borders can be harmful.

You DO realise that illegal immigrants have already caused multiple cases of tuberculosis, measles, mumps, whooping cough, scabies, and have reintroduced polio to this nation. Many of these people have received few, if any, vaccinations. How can you possibly think letting them roam free with no way of tracking them is not a bad idea amidst a potential epidemic?

Really??? Come on...

Being made to pay your debt to China is probably more of a concern for the U.S than any virus.

But yep, let's focus on using a medical thing to push political agendas.

Never fail to deliver do you American ATS'ers.....

I'm not for open borders and agree when it comes to screening potential immigrants for any country. It's their right decide who lives there I feel.
But as for diseases I'll laugh when a legit visitor to your country or returning citizens brings along Ebola or similar.

Because diseases don't give a # if you have a stamped passport or not.
