The first cases were in mid-late december. Unless it's super stealthy and undetectable after the symptoms are gone, then this scenario is not happening. Just doom porn imo.

The unexpected death of a person who recently travelled to China is being investigated for coronavirus, but the Bay of Plentys district health board says virus is unlikely to be the cause.

So we returned to work after a long weekend.

I had a bit of a general chat with people asking if they were watching the news.

they practically laughed atm.. said its just the flu - only the sick and elderly were at risk and they hadn't really heard much about it.

I cant believe it...

Things are going quite here in the UK, the media has reported hardly anything. All my updates have come from this (so thank you all for that!!).

Even the BBC haven’t updated their live coverage feed in almost 5 hours and even then it’s just been about the financial implications. It’s highly frustrating now, I always take the media with a pinch of salt but the rest of the country need to be aware. It’s not even trending online in the UK. I feel like we’re sitting ducks now waiting for the # to hit the fan.

Had the same experience. Actually got a "briefing" this morning and the info was old (from Friday). Lots of talk about how we should be more worried about the seasonal flu. Got reprimanded for correcting the "expert" (who had attended a CDC webinar last Friday) and told to "stay off Twitter."

I work in a job that places the safety of others (students) in my hands and no one wanted to take their heads out of the sand long enough to even consider how serious this could become.

Madness is like gravity, all it takes is a little push.

Once there is a case reported in London for a passenger who arrived at Heathrow, BBC and Sky lose their sh!t.

God that sounds like it'd have been so frustrating/infuriating... people like that are the ones you really don't want to be around if/when this thing really does hit close to home

That's basically true. It's very similar to the flu. According to this there are 3-5 million severe cases of the flu each year, worldwide, and 250k to 500k people die from it. That's nearly a 10% mortality rate. Of course this is "severe" cases of the flu, but isn't that basically what this wu flu is? Yet wu flu is killing 2-3%.

IF wu flu is more contagious (which it seems to be) then the deaths could get really high and that would be tragic. But playing the odds, non-elderly or not at-risk individuals have little to fear.

I'm doing my due diligence to make sure I'm prepared at home and that my responsibilities in our pandemic crisis plan are covered. Not much more I can do other than monitor things and wash my hands (literally and figuratively).

Exactly!! I live in out in the countryside but I work 3 days a week in London. 70 miles on a train plus using the underground. If it is as contagious as we suspect / fear, then it’s putting millions of lives at risk.

It’s situation like this that disgust me, this is a world wide crisis right now and we need to be given the facts, not diluted reports and cover ups.

No, it sounds like a communist government trying to be responsible in ham fisted way. I'm not going to base my response to something on how a communist regime is responding. I will base my reaction on the facts and an objective interpretation of them

From the post below mine:

"976 cases of severe cases, 106 cases of deaths"

10.8% mortality rate. Yep it's almost identical to the flu. Symptoms are similar, mortality rate is similar, the people it's killing are aged or sick or really young.

By the end of the week we'll know just how deadly this thing is. If it's far worse than it has been so far, I'll hop on the fearmongering band wagon. Same goes for if china is lying about the numbers. Until then the only thing you should really worry about is being prepared for the worst and hoping for the best.
