I still wonder why Chloroquine is not mentioned anywhere , i mean it dont have to be 100% effective....even 20% is something which to me could be helpfull in global pandemic..

Some updates as the suns setting on the 26th and the US comes online. Tomorrow in China (Monday) is the 'Day of the Rat'. The tradition is:

People will leave some grains and crackers in corners to share their harvest with the rats. They will then go to sleep early in order to not disturb the “wedding.” This way, the rats will not disturb them during the year either.

It looks like there's around 16 cities in quarantine, but its difficult finding an official source on that.

Ok, what in the world is going on? I have been off doing my own thing and come back and suddenly there is mass panic about something called corona virus. A virus, that based on a quick check has a mortality rate of about 2-4% and only really in susceptible populations. For reference the flu averaged about a 6% mortality rate over the years. So why the panic?

China are not panicking for nothing. They aren’t significantly impacting their economy for no reason. They are scared. Why is the question? They are acting like this could wipe them out. Could it? Is it more serious or more dangerous than we know. Certainly China’s actions would suggest such. I imagine we will see in the next 7-10 days, by which time Pandora’s box may be wide open.

This is so wrong. We have been exposed to coronaviruses before. Maybe not this particular one, but plenty of coronaviruses have passed through the population, this is just a new one.

This is pretty lethal. Imagine the worse flu you had x2.

Nah x0.5. It's way overblown. Just like SARS and MERS were (which were also coronaviruses).

I'm not saying take it lightly, I'm just saying don't panic people. It's not uncharted territory and it's not massively deadly.

The govt's reaction to lock down/ quarantine so many cities is what caused so much panic, I believe. Why do that? They closed down theaters, their trains/busses, casinos, Disney World, etc...Videos have leaked out that the death toll is so much higher than they're officially reporting, showing bodies left alone in crowded hospitals, sick people being turned away, hospital staff crying and falling ill themselves, people collapsing in the streets...It's pretty frightening to see.

Also, the only BSL-4 biolab in all of China,that contains some of the most dangerous pathogens, just happens to reside in Wuhan, ground zero of the coronavirus. There's speculation that is accidentally escaped the lab and that's why the govt is suddenly locking down all the cities. The official story is that someone contracted it from a meat market, but all kinds of rumors are swirling about what really happened. Doctors in Wuhan claim it's mutated into a much more dangerous virus.

Now our govt is evacuating US residents and flying them out. Why do that? It makes everyone suspicious.

Cases are popping up all over the United States, 4 in my state alone. It's very concerning that there's going to be many more.

They just signed a very unfavorable trade deal to china. Diversion, distraction, etc.

The video of the hospital had 3 bodies. That hardly constitutes mass casualties. The hospital didn't look all that packed if you ask me. Imagine the government pretending the flu is new. The line at the hospital would be 10x what I've seen.

I mean, if the mortality rate gets to 10% or so, yeah we'll have a real problem on our hands. But having survived mers, sars, bird flu, swine flu, and every other epidemic of the last 20 years I just find it tough to get too invested in believing this is the next spanish flu.

Precautions. What does it hurt to yank our people out for a few weeks while we get a better idea of what's going on?

I don't know, honestly. I'd read through all the threads if you can. It's concerning to me.

The Chinese reaction is either off the charts overkill or they know something we don’t. Latest I’ve heard from my sons Chinese friend is that there are rumours circulating in Wuhan that the Coronavirus is just the entry vehicle for something worse. Personally I think that is BS as the virus has been sequenced and anything odd, additional, altered would likely have shown up in said sequencing. Likely just the scared musings of a frightened populous.

However his friend, a nurse, has said the death toll is a lot higher than reported and that the military are removing the bodies. Again she couldn’t say just how many more are dead than is being reported, just that it is a lot more. a reply to: Dfairlite

It's certainly something to watch, I just don't get the panic. I mean, unless the numbers of deaths are vastly underreported it's hard to see this as anything really big. I mean, SARS was a big deal because it had a mortality rate of almost 30%. There were only around 3k cases of sars and almost 800 died. Compare that to this coronavirus, it's already infected 2,000 but only 56 have died.

This is much more like the flu than like sars. It spreads easily but is far less deadly than sars and maybe even the flu if the current numbers are correct.

Yeah, they either are hiding deaths (why though, there's already panic as if they are) or they're trying to induce panic for some reason or another. However, haven't they allowed WHO in this time (which would make hiding deaths pretty tough)? I know when SARS started they wouldn't let WHO in to survey and help, but this time I've seen no such criticism. In fact WHO was praising the chinese response just the other day.

The flu virus mortality rate is not 6%.

The flu virus record a standardised death rate of 3.9 per 100,000 persons.

In the US the flu virus in year 2017-2018 infected about 45 million people.
21 million medical visits. 810,000 hospitalizations.
61,000 of them died.

Thats an infection to death ratio of 0.01355% for the flu virus.
That's an infected to dead ratio of 3.125% (possibly 2.73% with new information above of 2,045 confirmed cases
- 56 fatalities) for the Wuhan Coronavirus.

- 324 in serious/critical condition (15.8% of people who get infected end up in serious/critical condition)
- 633 new cases yesterday (30.95% growth rate per day of new cases compared to total confirmed cases within a 24 hour period)

Though honestly from what I can tell from social media and pictures taken.... This is worse than what is being stated.

And honestly the Coronavirus being issues with schools in south america region a month or two prior before this outbreak in China... Well...

I feel a conspiracy theory coming on or at least something bigger than what is being reported happening.

I have no idea. It’s just an oddly massive response to something which, on the face of it, isn’t THAT serious. With the potential for economic damage, loss of face to the world - just seems, off.

As I said my son’s friend says those in Wuhan and Hubei suspected something far worse is going on. By the time we know it may well be too late. We will see soon I think.

I also do think that the virus is actually quite serious and deadly and if not contained many will die.

Imagine people contracting a very contagious virus and 15.8% of them being in serious/critical condition. 2.73 % of them dying. Imagine the lines at the hospitals. Imagine the disruption to the work-force. Imagine the hospitals overflowing. tremendously. And not being able to take care of 15.8% of the population in critical/serious condition thus causing more deaths than at this very early stage of the virus catching hold.

I mean what if you were in serious/critical condition due to this virus but were unable to receive treatment due to a massive overflow of petients attending the hospitals in such condition, such an overflow that the hospitals could not deal or help with those in said condition. How large would the death rate spiral up then?

I completely agree. The Chinese, though, must KNOW it’s potential to be reacting so vigorously. I believe it is bad enough as is. But I have a bad feeling it’s worse. a reply to: DaRAGE
