Sports "journalist" brings Amanda Anisimova to tears at Australian Open

In yet another example of why people despise the media, a sports "journalist" insisted on asking Amanda Anisimova about the recent death of her father in a press availability after she was eliminated from the Australian Open.

There are some people defending the journalist, since he immediately apologized and realized he "made a mistake." As if he didn't realize ahead of time that that was an insensitive question. In fact, it's likely that's precisely why he asked the question in the first place, hoping for the reaction he got. He apologized because of how immediate and sound the backlash was, because he realized it would affect him negatively. It's not like he didn't know what he was doing. They don't think up questions on the spot. He thought this out well ahead of time.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened and it happens in every sport. These people aren't real journalists and have to resort to sensationalist garbage like this to try to make a name for themselves. It's pathetic. Good to see fans and players alike rallying around Anisimova. A few years ago, after Venus Williams was involved in a car accident in which another motorist was killed, a reporter saw fit to ask her about it soon afterwards, again drawing the hoped-for tears. These people are vultures. They hide behind altruistic slogans like "the people have a right to know" and "democracy dies in darkness" as if their sole motivation is to perform some service to The People. Unfortunately, too many of them are simply out for themselves and don't care about the damage they do to the very institution they cloak themselves in, the Free Press.

To be clear, people like that don't represent the entire sports media, just like scum like Jim Acosta don't represent all of the American political press. But they sure do their part to destroy the reputation of the media, damaging the crucial role media plays in our society by degrading public trust.
