City council finance chairman Eric Mays said on April 27, “We’ve taken in over $647 million. This is where the money is at,” adding that Flint “broke records for giving black folks money.”

When replacing water lines, the city ignored maps that showed where lead pipes were, instead digging up the pipes in front of every house. The city paid engineering firm AECOM $6.1 million to supervise the digging of 12,000 sites, only 15% of which had lead pipes. Meanwhile, those who maps showed did have problematic pipes had to wait.

City officials also rescinded a contract from a company that was quickly making repairs and banned the use of “hydrovac” equipment, which digs up pipes cheaply and unobtrusively. That steered more work to a politically favored but inexperienced construction firm owned by an NBA player, which dug up yards using backhoes.

What a city.

Flint, got $390 million in state money to fix the lead in the water problem that the city has had for over 4 years. The data shows not all of the money went to make the drinking water safe.

The money was spent on economic and social development. free daycare, basketball and even giving residents $50 to apply for government benefits.

In other words, half of the money was used to buy votes!

Something needs to be done about our government.

And people want the government to run our healthcare.
They can’t even fix pipes.

money being misused by agencies overlooking it's dispersal happens a lot. This does seem excessive though, more than the usual ten to fifteen percent.

Mismanagement like this is why I don't believe it when government complain they need to raise taxes. They don't spend the money they do have efficiently.

In the first world I think the only thing that is taken more for granted than water is air.

Just turn the faucet on and there it is.

Truly depressing situation but par for the course with Democrat officials. They pull these stunts in every city. Mayor in my town, he would do much worse than this but thankfully there is still enough Republicans to reign him in. He's always trying to bankrupt the city with freebies and worthless pork projects. He really loves bonds and loans.

Always trying to get his hands on the credit card. Not sure how much longer it will last. City is being flooded with Democrat transplants from other failing cities. They are taking over slowly but surely and eventually run it into the ground.

Follow that money and you will find that it was more than just buying votes. That money goes to friends and pals of the politicians involved and then back to the politicians themselves.
Economic development.... a politicians friend gets some of the money to build a community center to benefit the community’. They use a small portion of the money to rehab a building that is already in place and most of the money gets kicked back in political donations and by hiring companies owned by politicians family members. It is all a big scam on the taxpayers.

I'm from Fling. A water line replacement before was about $2500

After the free money $22,000 for the same job.

No corruption there and they still have a new water line being built.

You can bet money that there were kickbacks involved when the pipe-replacement work was taken away from the first company and given to a less-experienced company with worse equipment, who spent most of their time digging up pipes that didn't need to be replaced.

Water expert Marc Edwards — who flagged the toxic water and helped gain national attention early on — has said that Flint’s water has been back to normal for years, but that “there’s people with agendas who want to make a perception that the crisis is ongoing.”

I find that the most remarkable part of that story. The water is fine now and yet they are still using it for a cash cow.
