If Trump is able to avoid war, will he get any credit?

It's disgusting how much these people were hoping for a war because it would help them win in November.

I've been asking this in several threads but have yet to get an answer:

The media and Democrats like Elizabeth Warren were obviously lying when they told their followers Trump was doing this to start a war to distract from impeachment.

How do our left wing members feel about being blatantly lied to? You have been all over parroting these lies for the past week and made complete fools of yourselves. Any animosity toward the media and Democrats for playing you like that, or no?

Credit?

Sorry, but you don't get credit for avoiding a war that you almost started. That's like asking for credit not giving somebody a concussion after you've walked up behind them and slugged them with a baseball bat.

Pretty much,

Why people seek confirmation bias like this thread, is much more of a mystery...or perhaps not, maybe just someone being crafty!

it's just pointing out that nothing Trump does will ever be OK with those of you who hate him. Be it waging war, or saving lives, hate must hate, as it's not smart enough to do anything else.

Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions. I'm no fan of Trump but being anti-war I was a huge fan of his promises to end the 'Team America World Police' and constant meddling in foreign affairs that all Presidents have conducted since WW2. I was far more critical of Obama for his warmongering ways as I openly admit I fell for his bull# of hope and change until he started beating the war drum and ramping up international tensions six months into his Presidency.

Believe it or not most people in the world base their opinions on their own ethics and morals, not who the US president is.

I can see where you're coming from though as the US media portrayal of politics is like a sports team where people have sides they support. Foreign affairs in the US are treated like a TV soap opera where all the context of events and geopolitical change is removed and countries and the inner workings of governments are only mentioned when there's a war or something that can be painted as a drama going on.

If only he had done this from the start. His actions took a moderate general off the board, replaced him with a hardline extremist, gave the Iranian populace (that were on the verge of getting rid of their current regime) a clear, foreign, enemy, and injured our reputation on the global stage.

We have got rid of a horrible person, but in the end it looks like Iran may actually come out for the better.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad this isn't going to war. I just think Trump went about this in the completely wrong way and I hope the soldiers that were deployed with no notice get to go home ASAP.

as is just about every reasonable american citizen

I hope the soldiers that were deployed with no notice get to go home ASAP.

that is their job
it is what soldiers do

lacking the mobilization, and demonstration of the ability and will to do so, do you think the outcome would be the same?

No one in my family avoided the draft.
Both my father, my brother and now my son served.

President Trump the merciful!
The consummate deal maker, MAGA and making the middle east a safer place at the same time.
Maybe he will win the next Nobel Peace Prize?

I'm of the belief that no matter what he does, those who hate him will contort, twist, and flop their way into finding a negative and some way to bash him. They hate, for the sake of hating. But at this time, EVERYONE is saying the same thing. Iran doesn't want war. Trump doesn't want war. The haters claim to not want war, but knowing that Trump's stance is that, it's likely to change completely.

War is idiotic. People die, regular people, us. Buildings are destroyed, sometimes amazing structures that should be preserved for future generations to marvel at. Lives are disrupted. And in the end, the side who lost the lest, wins. Yay! I have seen what war can do. No, I have never been engaged in war, I have never fired a weapon at a person for any reason. But while I was in the USAF, we flew into Sarajevo to drop supplies. On the approach, we flew over the city, or what was left of it. Mostly destroyed homes. People moving around pushing their last worldly possessions in a shopping cart. And from the looks of them, they weren't aggressors in any way. More like the remnants of a town decimated by a stupid war. We flew into Croatia, and saw what I thought was the most beautiful landscape I had ever seen. A winery overlooking huge cliffs and massive waves crashing far below. Not long after my visit, I was told that too, was decimated and erased. Was that considered a win, or a loss?

The point is, war isn't the way to progress. I believe Trump knows that, and his opposition to it has to do with the human cost. Ruling a nation with that kind of conscience must be hell. I wish those who flippantly throw armchair comments would try to put themselves in that place for a moment, before the jaws flap.

If you are spiritual, please pray for peace not war. Hope and Pray that the leaders of other nations also understand and fear the human cost of war. And try to remember your stance on all this, so when you decide to guzzle that hatoraid once more, you realize it's what causes that ugly look on your face, not the President. And don't be afraid to offer that rare praise for someone doing the right thing.

Well said OP.

As an independent, I don't care for Trump or Trumpism, but I certainly don't hate him or his supporters.
I personally think it's wrong to truly hate anything.

As with Syria, if Trump can show restraint with Iran, I'll absolutely give credit where it's due.

Hossein Salami (MajGen) is Chief Commander of IRGC. Esmail Ghaani (Brig Gen) is new Quds Commander replacing Soleimani.

So what did killing him really accomplish?

Revenge?
To intimidate iran?

Should we now kill esmail? Because if we knew that soleimani was planing attacks aren't those attacks still on the table? Killing one man wouldn't stop them.
In fact I would expect quds to ramp up there attacks over this. So why not kill esmail?
Do we just think he isn't as bad as soleimani and wait or him to maybe prove us wrong?

You're, 'pointing out' your opinion of what others think, that's a pretty presumptuous affair on your part, and says more about you rather than those you speak of.

Of course they will, but don't let the presence of a (literal or figurative) microphone in front of such people fool you into thinking they're anything more than an extremely tiny minority.

Whatever polls, internet posts and "news" clips show, remember they're not only not representative of the population as a whole, they're probably actually a good indicator of what/how most people DON'T think.

I think we (collectively) here at ATS and elsewhere are doing a bang-up job of giving WAY too much recognition to this small minority of "haters" and too little to acknowledge that most of the US population is more or less on the same page.

It is the way to profit. For a lot of companies and individuals who pay the people in government a lot of money.

So, like it or not. War is on its way. Maybe not tomorrow, maybe not a month from now, but it is on the horizon. Because the bottom line of a lot of powerful companies is built on it.

Trump could have avoided a war simply by going golfing instead. Or sleeping in, or literally anything else.

War with Iran isn't inevitable, it's an artificially created situation caused by hawks in Washington demanding that nobody have greater regional influence than America.

So do you think he should order a stand-down when our embassies are attacked?
