I have first hand experience with this, they are awful. Totally incompetent and always blaming someone else as their system turned out to be a joke over and over.

How do you lose money selling cannabis? It's easy, you just sell it for twice the price of the black market.

But, But ....what about my Big Daddy Government ???

/Sarc off

Government can't even make money selling DRUGS, and they find a way to run out of weed to boot !!

Perfect example of why government-run enterprises, socialism in particular, can never work.

Why tf are they even allowed to run a weed business?
Especially after jailing people in the past.

If it ever happens in the USA, I hope the government just becomes the "franchiser" and let mom-and-pops open their own pot stores. That way, you put people to work, government collects taxes and the expense of infrastructure is spread over thousands of people. The government just needs to set the guidelines. Sounds to me, Ontario is just greedy. They think this can make a few people rich. No free market when the government owns the distribution.

Is this the same government in charge of their healthcare?

No.. You know there are different governments for different things. For instance, you have the government that's in charge of the VA and the DMV, and then you have the government that would be in charge of medicare for all and paved roads. Two clearly different governments.

Is this like those two socialisms? The one that never works in the real world and the other one that's never been tried yet but produces perfect utopia every time?

Hey listen, Socialist governments have off days just like the rest of us. We have to be patient, like with a child..or a chia pet.

Its like a relationship. There's a give and take. You just gotta be willing to give and let government take. Its never been tried before!

I remember during October 2018 when the Ontario government started selling it online......complete disaster right off the bat. Immediate shortages, packaging issues, misleading labels, and other issues(There was an ongoing reddit post regarding it that was pretty damning). People were waiting weeks for something that was advertised as only taking a couple days. Add on to that the price as you mentioned and most people got fed up and bought it off the black market. Essentially anyone who regularly partook in cannabis was just going to keep getting it from their normal source anyways, but for some reason the government thought they'd get the business of these people ?

A kind of running joke up here is about how it is delivered when ordered online......Canada Post(National Postal Service) delivers it right to your front door, so our governmental postal workers now are glorified drug runners

That's funny! Our USPS only delivers junk mail these days. They could use something new to deliver. Unfortunately, I wouldn't count on them do deliver on time. Shipment tracking may show delivery today but if it's USPS, it could be in the next 3 days. I expect that if the package is labeled "pot", I probably won't get the package at all.

Amazon Prime is the only way these days.

And literally no private company has ever lost money...

Particularly in their first year of operation.

Probably not under those conditions. Selling a well known, high (get it????) in demand product with people literally lined up out the door. Seriously, they MADE $64,000,000. That's a s#tload of product. What company does those kinds of sales in it's first year?

Has the government EVER ran ANYTHING right? EVER????

That's what the OP's source says. I love an opportunity to point out how insufficient governments are, but this seems like a reasonable explanation.

A reasonable explanation isn't necessarily a GOOD explanation as to why so much mismanagement was allowed to occur. In Nevada and Colorado, the industry is regulated but not supplied by the government, nor is distribution, infrastructure, or any other aspect of the industry. Private enterprise is responsible for that and while I'm sure plenty of canna-businesses have collapsed, this level of failure is not justified, in my view.

While I am not a Canadian, I cannot imagine Canadian taxpayers will be pleased to watch their tax dollars burned up like this.

😂😂
When I read the headline, I immediately thought of our Cdn government selling weed, it was just the first thing that came to mind.

And sure enough!!

Also what seemed like the least likely province to go all in , Alberta has over 250 dispensaries and is planning on doubling that. Two years ago, you couldn’t even get medical pot here. Now there’s an abundance of pot, but they’ve got so much childproof plastic packaging, and the prices are atrocious.
So much plastic packaging.....while plastic packaging is slowly getting banned in grocery stores...the ones in charge - not totally sane up here.....

What conditions , first-year of business in a newly legal and regulated market. Circa 20% of start ups go out of business completely in their first year.

And yes. PLENTY of THINGS.

Considering the corruption of the LCBO, this system was designed to funnel money to people basically the most connected to politics, grafts and kickbacks. Some online digging will show you how this game plays out. I guarantee you, $ has not been lost, it's been redistributed. And

If you want weed, just grow your own, it's legal now and you can control the chemicals and grow nice clean product.

Many times I simply say, "never attribute to malice that which can be attributed to incompetence."

But not when it comes to government. You should always assume malice, or some permutation thereof, any time a government is involved.

Probably was more about funneling money to political appointees, cronies, and stooges. Donate to me, and I’ll get you a government job you can skim from.
