This is the person who tells you there is no objective reality & as such no objective morality either. No "right and wrong" There are many of them. We call them Millennials and Gen Z. They have to think this way otherwise they can't justify their hypocritical actions & capricious demands. These are the people that vote for "Democratic Socialists".

They have no stake in the future. No posterity to answer to. They don't even believe there is a future and have sunk into nihilism:

Generation Hopeless

Forget lazy, self-centred or cocky — the truth about most millennials is they’re absolutely hopeless when it comes to basic life and workplace skills, experts say.

They are regularly advertised prepackaged excuses for continuing to not take the initiative, to let opportunity slip away, to refuse to grow the hell up! Watching life evaporate through Escapism:

Coping Through Escapism: New Study Reveals How Today's Youth Deals With Stress

A new study by PsychTests.com comparing coping styles of different generational groups reveals that younger people are more likely to resort to distraction to cope with difficulties in their life.

A massive generation who aren't having kids, are more obese than the last generation, & refuse to grow up, are now demanding socialism as if it would enable their laziness, escapism, & capriciousness. They are narcissistic and driven by impulsivity:

Millennials Are More 'Generation Me' Than 'Generation We,' Study Finds

Millennials, the generation of young Americans born after 1982, may not be the caring, socially conscious environmentalists some have portrayed them to be, according to a study described in the new issue of the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

They deride all tradition, think it their sworn duty to whine and complain about injustice they never lived & don't want to do anything about. But they can talk, make videos, & write tweets about what they "believe", what they are outraged by, or what they are fleetingly "inspired" by. It's a generation of hashtag activists demanding I accept destitution so corporations can afford to pollute more by forcing nonsense climate taxes & carbon credit schemes. They demand I accept twisted notions of gender, specifically with regard to children. They have the money for drag queen story hour where men flashing their genitals at children is considered ok but opposition to it is called bigotry:

Drag queen flashes young children at ‘Drag Queen Story Hour’

They demand I filter my worldview through the lens of postmodernism rather than the Enlightenment substrate that has led to the comfort they enjoy while dreaming up new ways to put the chains of servitude back on.

They cling to long-discredited political & economic ideologies. They flash the hammer & sickle proudly & demand the destruction of market economies from behind their Apple laptops on which they feed their porn addictions, engage in childish escapism, & make demands of society; those evil bourgeois people who want to raise families, contribute to their communities, & actually solve problems owe this defective generation something. When the good and honest acquiesce to this, is it over? No. The demands simply become ever more insatiable and irrational...Generation Mob always makes more demands.

The censoriousness of Generation Mob is another massive paradigm shift with which free-thinking people must now contend. This generation & the one after are driving forces in the degradation of free expression & speech...more unreasonable demands of reasonable people by unreasonable mobs.

The largest generation in American history. Among which the lowest of common denominators are leading the outrage mobs & representing districts in congress. A generation of know-nothing takers refusing responsibility for themselves or the messes they make. Zombies overwhelming us with sheer numbers. Nihilistic masturbators eating themselves to death, drowning the rest of us in their capricious & salty tears as revenge for having made sound choices of moral rectitude in our own lives. How dare we?

Society doesn't owe us anything, folks. Even that which is attained by the collective efforts or funds of society requires individual contribution & responsibility.

I believe in responsibility because it is the substrate by which our rights grow. I believe in accountability because it is the substrate by which our freedom grows. This generation. My generation...they don't believe in those things. Reality is a game of subjective interpretations to them & the means to any end are all treated equally regardless of who is trampled along the way to "progress".

This cannot continue or we will become a society of fat & lazy criminals allowing the eradication of whole groups to satiate our selfish desire to "have it my way". If you think we could never be that kind of society in the 21st century you are wrong. We are becoming that now. People are starting to thirst for radical change & the only way to get radical change is to kill your opposition. We may be seeing that dynamic playing out in Virginia.

It's time to take responsibility. There is no free nation without it.

So it's not the Millennials' fault and you are apologizing instead of holding them accountable. THAT is how they got that way: People making excuses for them.

Speak for yourself. As an Xer, my lone contribution to the future is 9. He hasn't been in a position to do jack one way or the other for the future of the country yet.

I take no shame for anything.

What I see as a failure of a couple of generations I see as a great opportunity for my two boys....

When your competition is this crap you can shine quite brightly in their presence.

So what caused these young humans to be so absolutely hopeless when it comes to basic life and workplace skills? Was it something in the water?

I'm 1960, so either Boomer or gen X as how people might look at it. My two boys are gen Z and are shaping up nicely as one is all honors in an EE degree and the other wants to be a dentist. Gen Y seems to be the bad apple mostly 1980 -1999, they are the guys with neck beards that still live in their mothers basement and the women that look butch rough....

Disclaimer: If you are a gen Y and are not either of my examples then don't take offense to it...

Empty self-esteem

People love themselves too much. They sink into narcissism and self-centeredness looking for meaning in their lives instead of looking for ways to get outside themselves, live for others.

The piece at the link has some great points and parallels. Don't let the religious bits put you off and really think about it.

It was caused by the rich people holding them down, oh and a wall of participation trophies.

That is very interesting; I can certainly see the pitfalls of "loving one's self to much". But that really doesn't answer the question I had? What great calamity occurred that caused a whole generation of people to love themselves to much?

Thing is, that is how I learned. I certainly didn't know how to replace a starter on my car until my dad showed me. Emulation is how we learn.

Nothings really changed....youtube is chock full of videos that people emulate to learn stuff from. And its obviously a rather popular way of doing it. So i fail to see the point of your pseudo example here.

I told you:

We taught them to see themselves as special just for breathing, to self-examine. We taught them to love themselves to distraction without teaching them why (i.e. empty self-esteem - participation trophies being a symptom of this). We stopped asking them to strive to succeed because failure causes hurt feelings, so they don't really know themselves or what they're capable of, only that they they're great because we told them so.

No objective truths, no objective morals because it's all relative, so they have no standards by which to measure except whatever it is they make for themselves, inside themselves.

It's all internalized, and then we plug them in to social media where they never interact in any meaningful way, where all the knowledge is at their fingertips so they further never have to master anything because they can look it all up and they think it makes them experts.

Do you begin to see?

They'll be the first to die if society crumbles tomorrow because they've mostly never really had to do anything hardly ever for themselves. This is why they feel traumatized if they feel a negative emotion or run into something tough.

Who knows. One major difference is the internet. But i can't fix the blame there with any reason or logic, so who really knows.

Something is different. I have 2 kids. The older, 26, is a masters candidate funding his own life and education by working as a teacher. The 21 year old does as little as possible and has expressed a desire to live off the government if it were possible. Both raised by the same parents under the same rules. Maybe its personality? I don't know.

No.

This cannot be laid at the feet of previous generations. These are adults we're talking about here and we all have a choice. I'm in this generation. I was born in '84. I'm a 35-year-old man, are you really trying to absolve me of my own responsibility, my own sins like a personal Jesus?

I own my own modest home & live within my means, I have a wife with whom I have partnered for 15 years & two wonderful kids. I impart as much knowledge as I can because I don't want to raise a couple of know-nothings just because it is convenient to google things. I don't abdicate my responsibility for their development or MY continued development.

I accept that as long as the lights are on I have a responsibility to act in my life in a moral way, which is defined as a proven means of behavior by which individuals and society flourish with minimal friction to true progress; thus enabling human freedom through ethical governance, education, & economic liberty.

My generation stopped believing in this. Maybe your responsibility lies in forgetting about it too, but these are things adults are all supposed to know by now. By some means or another that knowledge impinges on us throughout our lives. This is the first generation where that has not been true & blaming yourself, while simple & intuitive, does not make for an effective root-cause-analysis.
