A mixed day.
One of the most useful things I've learned in life so far is discerning when it is appropriate to give general (versus specific) detail. So here, in
regard to the beginning of the day, it will suffice to generally say I was incredibly miserable.
Happily the situation improved. Not least because I uncased the guitar for the first time in maybe months. Started out rough but as always, it grew on
me...fast. We're old friends, me and that guitar. I strummed chords and sang for baby while wife cooked; baby smiled at the music, which made me feel
great. Got a big ol' blister on my thumb and shredded my fretting hand fingers. (For someone like me, this is proof of "real man's work"...a source of
pride akin to the everlasting sheen of oil on the hands of a mechanic.)
Played a game with the eldest daughter. We are BIG on games around here - board games, dice games, cards, word games, puzzles, dominoes...you name it.
I like rolling dice best (Yahtzee, Farkle, etc.) but I let the girl have her pick. Sequence Junior it was. Let her win best 2 of 3 and really pulled
off a convincing "I'm flabbergasted you beat me!" act. (Other dads do this, right?) She's a good kid; if I'm lucky, she'll be rebellious by not being
a screw-up like me.
In spite of a rough start, had a good day. Merry Christmas everybody.
