Was this by any chance Jeremy Corbyn, the leader of the Labour party?

I agree this was a driver, but Brexit was probably the main driver.

Not up here mate.
Corbyn is truly despised.
He is viewed a supporter of Islamic terrorists and even worse a defender of the I.R.A.
And there's a feeling that he and Momentum take the North East for granted and don't care one little iota about the cares and concerns of ordinary everyday people.
Corbyn and his cronies pander to every minority and the snowflake agenda whilst treating their core voters with disregard and disdain.

Yes, Labour's stance on Brexit and their insistence on 'we know better' was an important factor. But it was yet another example of the arrogance and contempt which the champagne socialists and middle-class Marxists have for us.

Added to that there's the complete lacking of the most basic economic realities.

Personally, and it's a viewpoint that's becoming increasingly common, I feel our whole political model is morally defunct and thoroughly unfit for purpose.
Party politics has had its day.
It's time for radical reform of our electoral and parliamentary processes.....but of course NONE of the major political party's would agree with me as they wish to maintain the status quo and their place at the trough, all at our expense.

I am a realist and I accept that Boris was by far the popular choice.
I hope he proves me wrong and he moves this country forward and he manages to unite what is a seriously fractured and divided country and Union.
I suspect not.....but we shall see.

I was simply trying to help someone obviously unfamiliar with British politcs to identify the person he had been reading about. Unless the man you have in mind is "some really old guy, an opposition candidate", his existence doesn't affect my answer.

I hope the brexit brings what you hope, and that your health system doesn’t come to resemble ours. I don’t expect this will be the case, but I truly hope so.

US big pharma and medicare are already circling. The Tories have been underfunding the NHS for a decade to the point it's buckling under the pressure, all the while pointing to migrants as the cause. They have already sold off large parts to private firms, The rest will fall now.

In a very short time people will be turning up and queueing for services in the NHS wondering why some people get to jump the queue. waiting time for the poor will be beyond life expectancy.

There will be a queue for those who can't afford private health insurance and no queue for those who can and most of the idiots in this thread and others actually voted for it.

Conservatism just wins all the way around. People in every civilized country are starting to take notice.

And once again, Trump was right... The media is the enemy of the people.

What's crazy is that the media constantly lies to democrats and members of the labour party but these people still rely on the media for all of their information. I'd be pissed at the media if I were them, for being let down over and over and over.

Right, and the Trump victory was an anti-Hillary vote. Yet she had more votes than any democrat in history other than 2008 obama.

First of all, the councillor you referred to left the IRA in 1972, and didn't become a Conservative councillor until 30 years after this. She was suspended when her former links was discovered and she was only reinstated once she had been investigated and it was confirmed that her former ties were cut. So no, they didn't have an active IRA member as a councillor, they had someone who had defected 3 decades earlier.

Second, there is a difference between a single member of your party being a member of the IRA 30 years ago and the leader of your party, (and potentially the country) publically voicing support for them.

What media are you refering to, The Sun backed Boris, the BBC stated he had a lead, not sure which media you are depicting as lying, could you clarify? or is it just another 'fake news' stab in the dark type post. If you mean social media, hell thats never been news worthy or reliable and IMO never will be.

I voted conservative twice before and once green, never voted labour in my life, but i abstained this time as both party leaders IMO are as bad as each other.

Momentum is effectively a party within a party.
All members of Momentum must a member of be willing to become a member of The Labour Party.

They have been likened to Militant Tendency a Trotskyist group who infiltrated The Labour Party and had undue influence over them back in the 70's and 80's.

en.wikipedia.org...(Trotskyist_group)

Momentum are considered Marxist and very pro-Corbyn.
They have control over the selection of Labour Party candidates and anyone deemed not following the party line can be de-selected and replaced by a suitable left-wing candidate.
Standing MP's who vote with their own conviction or in accordance with their electorate's wishes face the threat of having their whip removed and being de-selected.

en.wikipedia.org...(organisation)

Momentum will do their very best to ensure that Corbyn's successor will be equally left-wing and have the same principles.
I suspect that any re-branding will merely be glossing over the same PC driven, snowflake sensitive, minority pandering claptrap that they were peddling at this election.
They arrogantly assume that they know better than us mere mortals and that we need to be protected from ourselves.

But Momentum are not unique, The Conservative Party has started de-selecting candidates and withdrawing the whip of independent minded Tory MP's.

Further evidence that the party political system is no longer fit for purpose.

Are you able to be specific? Most payment to private providers to the NHS are GPs, who have never been part of the NHS because they were not included in 1948.

Then there's pharmacies and dentists, followed by companies who provide pathology and diagnostic services more efficiently than in-house services. Then private treatment centres who specialise in routine stuff (like cataract operations), and do the “churn” more efficiently than the NHS ever did, so are good for the patient. Oh, not forgetting cleaning services and such, who are also usually best outsourced as this provides competitive pressures to maintain quality.
All of the above have been privately sourced for decades in one form or another and by all political parties.

The biggest scandal in privatisation was Labours slavish adoption of PFI.

Is there any evidence (i.e. real evidence) that the Conservatives are going to sell the NHS, or start paying colossal sums to the US pharmaceutical companies?

You are being a drama queen and being drip-fed tat.

The people of the UK have sent a STRONG mandate for Brexit and for FREEDOM from the utterly undemocratic, corrupt and failing EU.

What Britain has done is elect a party of the rich who will look after the rich and deliver the worst case scenario for Brexit , Johnson is selling the deal as Brexit but it isn't Brexit , we will still be tied to the EU we just won't have a say over the direction of the EU.

like the 2016 US election we had a choice between bad and worse , we chose bad (I say we but I did not vote) , we elected a lying lightweight because the alternative was so unpalatable , it's for Johnson to prove me wrong

I see no reason to rejoice other than celebrating the undemocratic scumbags who lost their seats and in Swinson's case the leadership of her party.
