It would be unconstitutional for President Trump to be impeached on the current record. It would be an utter abuse of the power of Congress. The constitution sets out four criteria for impeaching a President; treason, bribery or other high crimes and misdemeanors. Unless one of those criteria is met, Congress does not have the authority to impeach, and if they do, their impeachment would be void.”

Alan Dershowitz

Nadler said on abuse of power: “It is an impeachable offense for the president to exercise the powers of his public office to obtain an improper personal benefit while ignoring or injuring the national interest. That is exactly what president trump did when he solicited and pressured Ukraine to interfere in our 2020 presidential election.”

Nadler explained obstruction of Congress: “A president who declares himself above accountability, above the American people and above congress’ power of impeachment — which is meant to protect against threats to our democratic institutions — is the President who sees himself as above the law.”

Schiff claimed that Trump continues to abuse his power as president, which left the Democrats “no choice” but to proceed with impeachment.

He insisted if the Democrats did nothing it would make them “complicit in the President’s abuse of his high office, the public trust and our national security.”

What a load of bull snip with some Schiff on top.

Why isn't he impeached yet then? Surely if he was guilty then he'd already be out and on his way to prison? That's the way it works according to you, correct?

At this point, I expect the House Dems will ultimately vote to censure Trump, as a way of making this go away, so perhaps there might be a chance they won't lose their House majority next year.

Exactly this. My hubby and I came to the same conclusion watching the hearings yesterday too. We fully expect that they will not really want the Senate to start publicly digging, especially before the coming election.

They will try to say they are forced to take the higher ground due to how partisan divided this is, especially within the GOP majority Senate and cry out to the voters to remove Trump for them in 2020.

It really has been such a farce. At the end of yesterday's hearing, we watched as Nadler and Jordan sat there and had a big hearty laugh together. My husband definitely trying to find a still image of them having that big laugh to make one of his memes.

The thing is, there's no actual definition for "other high crimes and misdemeanors." Up until now Congress has pretty much been given carte blanche to define it as they see fit.

If you agree with what Dershowitz says, then I guess that means you must also believe that Clinton's impeachment is void as he was charged with perjury.

as he was charged with perjury.

Perjury is a crime, right?

That's why the Democrats need to charge Trump with bribery, so they actually have a charge of criminality.
