We are having the age old argument "in our house anyway" whether it's grilled cheese or toasted cheese sandwich.

Dammit! You grilled the bread on a flat surface, you didn't put it in the toaster....

It's also not a hot water heater....why would you heat hot water? It's a water heater....ugh...

Bare with me hear... I'm from northern Indiana,,, the place where green bell peppers were called "mango's"...
That's not a joke... True story....

Anyways..... Opinions?

Yeah I know... It's a slow day..

Chesse toastie if made in a toastie machine.

Grilled cheese sandwich if made under the grill.

Cheese on toast if bread done in toaster.

Also, it is neither a hot water heater or a water heater - it is an immersion heater. Having said that, water heater out of the 2 options you provided.

And yes, very slow day!

I'd say you have 2 differently prepared sandwiches.

Grilled cheese would be done in a frying pan or some other apparatus for that purpose. With butter on the outside of the bread and cheese in the middle.

Toasted cheese would be done in a toaster oven or oven. Open faced with the cheese being melted by the heat.

It’s a grilled cheese. What kind of blasphemy is a “toasted cheese sandwich”?

Do you call a cheeseburger a cheesy beef sandwich?

At home, growing up in south central Pennsylvania.... we called them 'toasted cheese', even though the ones we made were grilled.
However, a family that lived a few miles down the road made something that you could call toasted. There were 7 children in the family and the mother had an expedient method of making a 'toasted cheese' sandwich. She toasted bread and then smeared one piece with Kraft Cheese Whiz, then put another piece of toast on top of it.

I was working in Dunmore, PA once and stopped at a greasy spoon for lunch. They had a sign on the wall for a 'Steak and Cheese' sandwich.
I expected a 'cheesesteak'.
What I got was a boneless ribeye about 3/4'' thick with a slice of processed american cheese between two pieces of white bread.

Is it actually cooked on a grill?

Where I live, if the bread is buttered and cooked on the stove in a pan until both sides are crispy and the cheese is melted it's a grilled cheese sammich. If the bread is put in the toaster or the toaster over, it's toasted cheese bread or a toatsted cheese sammich if the cheese is between the bread.

Green bell pepper called a mango? Um, no. WTF you guys drinkin' up there? That # will get you shot with some of the people I know (not really, but just it's essentially blasphemous.

Lets convolute this thread some more. I grew up eating cheese on toast. Toast the bread, then put slice cheese on it and place it under the broiler to melt the cheese. Love it.

I pretty much agree with the OP tho. In a grill pan, grilled cheese. In a toaster oven, toasted cheese.

Calling a bell pepper a mango makes me want to punch a cat.

It's a grilled cheese sandwich.

If you're making a cheese sandwich using a toaster, you can call it whatever you want as long as you're not serving it to me.

Yes, in Indiana depending upon where you are, green peppers are still sometimes referred to as mangoes or mango peppers. It goes back over 100 years and seems to closely follow areas with Amish populations. So Indiana and parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Hot, water heater.

In my house my Mother grills her cheese sandwich. I use the toaster oven to melt the cheese on my cheese sandwich.

So, I guess it could go both ways?
