Unable to get into Canada legally because of a robbery conviction, Charles Gonsoulin of Los Angeles attempted to sneak across the border to meet an Internet lover. Police found him dehydrated, babbling and severely frostbitten on a golf course in Manitoba. He will lose all his fingers and half his toes, and will be deported once he recovers from his amputations. In all, he managed to travel about seven kilometers.

winnipeg.cbc.ca
A court in Manitoba has given a suspended sentence to an American man who will lose all his fingers and half his toes after sneaking across the border in the dead of winter to visit an internet flame.

Police found Gonsoulin on a golf course in southern Manitoba on Feb. 23, after he had spent about 100 hours in the cold. He was dehydrated, babbling and severely frostbitten. Temperatures during the four days ranged from a high of around –10 C to a low of almost –30 C.

The 41-year-old Los Angeles man had developed an online relationship with a woman in Quebec, but wasn't able to enter Canada legally to meet her because of a past robbery conviction. He set out from Pembina, North Dakota with a plan to walk across the border and make his way to Winnipeg, where he intended to board a bus to meet his sweetheart. In the end, he managed to travel only about seven kilometres.

Canadian winters are unforgiving and unlike the Internet, potentially deadly. This man is lucky to be alive.

Most Canadians are aware of the dangers; such severe frostbite is a plight generally reserved for drunks and the mentally challenged. Still, the Canadian reputation for toughness is not undeserved.

One hopes this story will serve as a warning to all eager lovers, soldiers and ardent admirers contemplating mid-winter cross-country border jumping.

What a silly man for not postponing his love rendezvous until warmer spring weather arrived.. If he had waited another 30 days, he'd still have his fingers 'n toes!

Too bad he wasn't an Arab terrorist or Chinese human trafficker, he'd be gettin' some good lovin' right about now. At least Canada has socialized medicine, or will they bill him for medical expenses. That would serve him right.

When I read this I could not stop laughing, as sad as it seems I will have to said that love can turn some into fools.

Whoa, I am glad that is still some romantics out there that, rain, tornados, hurricanes, thunderstorms, freezing rain or fros bite will not stop them for pursuing their object of their unconditional love.

I am a helpless romantic.

Lots of good but no lovin Grady. Those who use and abuse our generous system to fight against our system tick us off as much as it does the Americans.

So far as I know, Grady, he will be billed as he's not a citizen or a permanent resident.

I have no sympathy for the guy. He broke the immigration policies of Canada and deserves what he gets. It would have been cheaper, I'm sure, to send the woman a plane ticket.

On a similar note, I am rabidly against Americans going to Canada to buy prescription drugs. The price of drugs in Canada is the function of public subsidy and when Americans buy their drugs from Canadian pharmacies, they are stealing from working Canadians.

It's a practice that should stopped and Canadian pharmacies should also be held accountable by the Canadians.

Absolutely
The big pharmaceutical companies defer to Canadian legislation because market wise we really don't matter. When Canadian entrepeneurs take advantage of the legislated price difference they are killing the golden goose for all Canadians.

Would that be a blanket insult directed at Americans? Perhaps a few paragraphs of explanation would be in order.

This is an old story - I saw it on Fark like a week ago.

Hell, I lose an arm and a leg every time I go to Canada.

Liquor tax, casinos, and strip clubs that former Miss Universes dance at? Are you kiddin' me? And now the Dollar sucks.

Ya, he's better off than I've been after a weekend up there.

I hope he got to at least see his girl in the hospital or jail.

She probably didn't know he was coming.

The most ironic thing and it just hit me: dude was having an online relationship and just lost all his fingers. That relationship is over.

This one wasn't in the stars was it?
