Check out this original headline from the Washington Post's obituary for Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi:

Wayback Link.

It now reads:

Changed headline.

Any doubt there are some crazies within the ranks of the Washington Post?

Some of my favorite passages:

...an austere religious scholar with wire-frame glasses and no known aptitude for fighting and killing...

... Mr. Baghdadi maintained a canny pragmatism as leader...

...“He was the guy who could build bridges between the foreign fighters and local Iraqis”...

...Mr. Baghdadi “proved himself to be a capable and cagey leader, politically”...

...Acquaintances would remember him as a shy, nearsighted youth who liked soccer but preferred to spend his free time at the local mosque...

...“He always had religious or other books attached on the back of his bike”...

...at age 31, he was well on his way to a doctorate and a shot at a full professorship...

...“Prepare your arms, and supply yourselves with piety. Persevere in reciting the Koran with comprehension of its meanings and practice of its teachings,” Mr. Baghdadi said. “This is my advice to you. If you hold to it, you will conquer Rome and own the world.”

Just a poor misunderstood religious scholar.

Personally I think they should have kept the original headline.

An obituary is supposed to say what a man was like and their work in life, and Al-Baghdadi was not a frothing at the mouth deranged lunatic, nor was Osama Bin Laden.

Nobody would ever have expected a man like Al-Baghdadi back in 2003 when he was first noticed to become the Caliph of a global-spanning terror state.

Tell that to Kayla.

And yes, he was a 'frothing at the mouth deranged lunatic'!

What the hell is wrong with you?

Deranged lunatics do not rise to positions of power and prominence.

Giving an accurate account of his personality and his life prior to the rise of the Islamic State does not detract from the many crimes he committed.

A man can be a monster without hysterically being turned into a caricature.

Hahaha what a bunch of Moderate Liberals.

The white liberal differs from the white conservative only in one way:

the liberal is more deceitful than the conservative. The liberal is more hypocritical than the conservative. Both want power, but the white liberal is the one who has perfected the art of posing as the Negro's friend and benefactor; and by winning the friendship, allegiance, and support of the Negro, the white liberal is able to use the Negro as a pawn or tool in this political "football game" that is constantly raging between the white liberals and white conservatives.

still apt.

No, I'm quite aware of him.

If you knew anything about him you would also know he was neither deranged nor a lunatic. Though he has been characterised that way by popular historiography which if anything serves to mitigate the horrendous acts of the Third Reich. No longer is it a cautionary tale of the dangers of a modern, civilised nation being misled by a demagogue.

This is why we cannot and must not trust the MSM. Certainly seemed like a sympathetic obit from a US paper. Scarily disgusting.

The one where people recognise the very real implications of a talented public speaker and gifted manipulator to win over the hearts and minds of a powerful, civilised country, very much like our own, using half truths, lies through omission and fabricated enemies to convince them. The very things I and many others here have decried the western mainstream media for.

But if you would prefer to think of him as some cackling maniac who through sheer luck ended up the undisputed, absolute ruler of Germany and not one person thought "hey, something isn't quite right with this chap", go ahead.

And to make all of that clear, a favorable headline is necessary?

Well you may read it as favourable, I do not. I think it merely portrays what he was like as a person beyond the Islamic State, that people may not have known.

Everybody knew he was an Islamic Extremist. The original headline implies a study of the man himself and how he became the monster he was.

The new one simply reinforces widespread common knowledge and isn't particularly interesting.

For some reason wayback links don't work ... but if you quote me and copy and paste the link it in fact true what the OP said. There are 4 edits on the obituary.
