It's a subsidy because the government is giving them money. iPhones are beneficial, the government should not be buying them for personal use. Steak is great, government should not be buying steaks for people.

This tells you nothing about where the public stands, it tells you what the MSM is pushing. Anyone who wants it is free to buy it.

If you know that the IC is legally allowed to meddle in "news" to create propaganda, why on Earth would you pay for a rag of lies?

It seems like the Country is in deeper turmoil than ever, with proven lies tying back directly to print media (paper and online). Why would anyone want to read that? Just because it confirms their own bias?

Sorry to hear about the rough times 2Billies, for whatever reason I feel the world loves giving us those right before the Holidays.

And I did mean the unique perspective as a compliment... I've read many of your threads and star plenty of your posts.

It was merely constructive criticism. The world is inherently filled with hyperbole and rhetoric, so I'm used to looking past it... But many get turned off by it, so when you load some phrases, you do your own point a disservice.

Speaking for myself though (I've had some bad news with very close family's health recently as well), I know how important it is to vent frustration and anger... Just make sure you're balancing it with positivity too. It's easy to let things snowball in times like this, so an active engagement in positive things is always key for me in trying times.

cheers ATS friend.

That's what dictators do, only positive press is allowed and I'm betting a good contingent of his followers are quite fine with this as they don't support freedom of press let alone freedom for the public.

I agree this is what dictators do. But I see no reason why the government should be wasting money on anything. People will just have to get their news online like everyone else. Newspapers are so 1800s.

Ummm...Somehow...I don't see President Trump...during his second term...reordering these piss yellow rags...

But if you want to make up for the lost revenue...then just send subscriptions to these yellow rags to all your fellow yellow rag consumers...I'm sure you could all have a wonderful time making piss yellow rag origami...

Providing you wring it out first...natch...

Again, I said if it's absolutely necessary vital for a report, and this would be one subscription (or two for print and one computer's access). Maybe some of these agencies have to play damage control, IDK, that's why I said if, purely for a compromise sake if there is some sort of unseen backlash that comes about.

That said, legal or not there has always been government fed propaganda. Anonymous sources are typically government employees, they can pass off bad info with zero ramifications from their employer or the publisher... They simply (might) get burned as a source.

It seems like the Country is in deeper turmoil than ever, with proven lies tying back directly to print media (paper and online). Why would anyone want to read that? Just because it confirms their own bias?

You and I read it (even if infrequently), or else how would we be aware it exists? I can't get myself to watch cable media, but I do read the MSM print articles online quite often. But I also compare that to local news, smaller independent outlets, foreign outlets ect. It's easier for me to be able to read between the lines that way through contrast.

First is trump talking about all subscriptions, or just those he dont like?
Second, not everyone owns cellphones. Some of us just dont like the idea that we should be available 24/7 and feel that people wont die if they have to wait till we get home to talk to us. I only got mine when I wanted to take advantage of wal mart's pick up grocery service.
And it's a cheap prepaid phone with limited data usage... so, I'm selfish with my data usage. Unless there is wifi available, I ain't using the internet on it. Contrary to what some want to believe not everyone of limited means is walking around with top of the line cellphones with unlimited service. Dont have any games on it either.. they seem to cause problems with the phone.
Three.. of course you have to bring in the "responsibilty" lecture.. the all purpose go to for conservatives.
Four, I was just trying to explain how those subscriptions might be considered beneficial and therefore not really subsidies.
Personally, my first thoughts went to the kids who end up sitting in waiting rooms with their parents. Have you ever been in a pediatricians waiting room? They have boring, out of date magazines because they spend a small fortune on interesting and fun toys to occupy the kids because being stuck in an office with a bunch of bored, fussy, unhappy kids is gonna drive everyone nuts and cause the parents to start complaining more often about wait times. If a few subscriptions of some children's magazine will occupy some of a kids time while waiting, it's worth it!

What does a hospital/office waiting room have to do with the White House?

You are acting like Trump is shutting them down and not letting anyone buy it. Anyone who wants to can buy it.

LOL, Trump is now "government"? No government exists outside of Trump? The CIA is what...just a pretty (and strange) office building full of people absolutely not paid by the government?

Smith-Mundt was repealed. You can find the ties and links falling out of literally every orifice on Bezos body.

The Republicans, the be all, end all of government. I never knew that. Thanks for the elucidation.

I seriously don't have time to. I post here in between tasks at work. When not at work, i try to focus on my family and playing Red Dead Redemption 2. Maybe cure some bacon, or make a killer batch of chili.

My awareness of news comes from reading commentary by people online in the moments when my family doesn't want my focus, and won't share the living room TV for my penchant of riding horses to a new mission.

Understandable... I'm in sales, and typically get big licks to fill my quotas, so I'm left with a lot of time I need to keep my brain active... But I like you, typically turn to ATS and reddit to balance each other out. The beauty of using those two as aggregates is I get to refrain from clicking the links (unless not enough tidpbits are in the OP) as I despise giving them my ad money.

Also, try smoking that pot of chili, it's truly dope.

I'm a lone wolf, so again, I have a luxury of time quite a bit. But even when I'm doing sales calls and on the road I opt for talk radio (minority of time) and a good range of different podcasts so I can knock out two birds with one stone. Also, mentally engaging listening material helps keep the mind more alert while driving than music does.

The phones they give to the poor, which I am assuming you are talking about are not the state of the art, top of the line cellphones and the service has restrictions. The program has been around since I was a kid and there was no cellphones and what you got was a party line. It's called lifeline and what its main purpose was was to ensure that people had a way to call 911 if there was an emergency. In today's world where you need that phone to land a job... as well as be available at the spur of the moment to come in and fill in for that sick coworker who failed to come in.... maybe making sure the poor has a phone isnt a bad idea? They still give an option between a landline or cellphone.
And, the cellphone company is providing a service, it's the poor that are getting the subsidy, and it's the danged employers who are demanding their employees have phones but are unwilling to pay them enough to even be able to obtain the basic necessities of life that are having their labor cost subsidized.
In the case of these subscriptions, I guess you are griping that the govt is subsidizing the the govt?

Why waste money and pay for it? Anyone in the White House can access it online for free or pay for their own subscription. I think the White House should cancel all print subscriptions, that is a giant waste of money in today's internet world.

Or do what public schools do....

Have one computer, and one print subscription people can share if it's absolutely vital they have to use ______ for a report or something.

A few dollhairs a month, and everyone is happy.

And why are federal employees who are much better paid than the average citizen incapable of paying to access any newspaper of their choice either online or in print? Why turn it into a giant socialist giveaway to people who earn more than average.

Ummmm. I offered a very cheap compromise with the caveat if it's absolutely needed for work.

Have one computer, and one print subscription people can share if it's absolutely vital they have to use ______ for a report or something.

One subscription per agency wouldn't be a "giant socialist giveaway" as you put it.

I'm going to be really honest, and please don't take this the wrong way. I often see you have some great points and offer insight that others do not by providing a unique angle... But sometimes that gets lost when you get overtly hyperbolic.

You are right, I do get carried away sometimes. Especially after a very stressful few weeks. Put Aunt in Hospice, cleaned and emptied her apartment, Mother taken in ambulance to ER, daughter's Mother-in-law died, husband found out he needs neurosurgery. (all in the last 2 weeks)

So you never know when people need an outlet and why they get carried away.

Thanks for saying I have a unique perspective, I think that is a compliment. This is my safe outlet, so yes sometimes I get overtly hyperbolic when I can't channel my energy elsewhere without hurting the feelings of those around me.

Ummm...I have to agree with some of what CriticalStinker said about your posting here on ATS...

I find your posts very refreshing...you argue from a perspective based in logic and intellect...IMO those qualities are sometimes rare to find here on ATS...

I'd been meaning to share this with you and thought this might be the proper time...

Some positivity your way...thank you for being a voice of reason...reasoned intelligently...

Respectfully...

Doesnt the va run hospitals? Doesnt the social security have widows with children applying for benefits?
I kind of sounds like at least some here think that this goes for all agencies and it's kind of hard for me to think that their isnt kids sitting in their waiting rooms.

One person said one thing about freedom of the press and this thread morphs into some discussion of that.
Its not freedom of speech or freedom of the press that is being squealched here.

Its donny boy pulling up the covers so he cant see the monster in the closet.

Its him trying to ignore the news. If he could he would take a long extended trip to someplace far away right now but he lost that option. So he seeks to control what he sees in his environment.
Kind of like those blackout curtains I had in my first apartment so I didn't have to look at the nasty house next door. The house was still there but I couldn't see it.

So becuase he doesn't want to pay for something that is irrelevant, he is hiding from the information??

So you are saying because the President was allowing the Government to pay for print he HAD to read it??

this is why your opinion is disregarded ms silly. Even if the Government was still paying print media, that does not mean

the President or anyone HAS to read it, nor does it mean the the information wont "get out" to the masses.

I do understand Your confusion, the previous President was so ill informed, he "claimed" that Hillary's server was

something he learned about in the NEWS, even though it was latter shown he sent Emails to that address.

So no, President Trump has access to information you can only dream of. (I do miss the DIA DIN's daily)

He does not need to read newspapaers to learn what is going on in the world today..
