We had a family of Flickers living in a big old hollow tree in our backyard. I spent a lot of time watching the parents teach the youngsters. One thing that I noticed. Flickers always made perfect horizontal lines of holes in the trees. Four or five holes. So perfect of a straight line, that you could probably line up a ruler on it exactly! I always wondered if woodpeckers did the same thing? Or if each type of bird had it's own distinctive pattern?

Does anyone know?

I love flickers, there are such a cool color, and so large. And they have a cool call.
I didn't know at first they were woodpeckers.
We lived at our house for like 15 years before we saw them visit our feeders.
They love suet...and we had an old branch, with half-dollar size round inch or so depressions in it...we put suet in them and woodpeckers loved the meal.

In the spring, when the ants swarm, they hunt for ants on the ground.
