What the New York Times Outing a Whistleblower Tells Us About Trump's Smear Campaign

“I am more concerned about people in the government disclosing that information to potentially harass the whistleblower,” Colapinto said. “It’s obvious, given the president's other comments, given what was said earlier this week, that that's going to be the focus of the president's defense: to shoot the messenger.” President Donald Trump and his allies had already begun attacking the anonymous intelligence official as “a political hack job” when his complaint to Congress was released on Thursday morning. The document suggests that the White House attempted to cover up Trump’s July phone call with the Ukrainian president, in which Trump asked his foreign counterpart to dig up dirt on Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden.

www.vice.com...

Outing a whistleblower is illegal. Yet Trump has called for it on more than one occasion. More potential crimes for Trump, right from his mouth.

“Any decision to report any perceived identifying information of the whistle-blower is deeply concerning and reckless, as it can place the individual in harm’s way,” attorney Andrew Bakaj said. “The whistle-blower has a right to anonymity.” There are legal protections to shield federal employees from retaliation for speaking out, and whistleblowers who don’t see action on their complaints sometimes go to the press.

“The president is in charge of enforcing that, and now he's the one leading the charge trying to unmask the whistleblower, or making snide comments that his audience is laughing about,” said Colapinto, who’s also represented FBI whistleblowers. “It's shocking behavior. Where do you start?”

This is a constitutional crisis started by Trump, who has no understanding of laws or the constitution.

He has no grasps of how many crimes he is committing, and simply acts like a mob boss.

Thank god he will be gone by the end of the year.

Obama not only exposed and prosecuted whistleblowers but also targeted the journalists that reported it. But hey hypocrisy is the only thing consistent with the left so carry on.

Except the "whistleblower" may have breached protocol and thus is not protected by whistleblower laws.

Is this second whistleblower going to say that he also heard the phonecall which was released to the public and has nothing in it at all that is cause for impeachment?

I mean what is this second "whistleblower" blowing?

You people are so incoherent and cannot even see it.

According to you guys Trump is a complete idiot - but also he is a criminal mastermind. Sorry - mentally stable people have to pick one and stick too it, not alternate to whatever they feel best fits the situation at hand.

I find it hilarious when idiotic reporters think they are going to get Trump by asking him an obvious trap question. They get so angry when he doesn't fall for it. They can't deal with it - they are sure he is an idiot - but he makes them look stupid.

You leftists are down to just name calling and fabricating BS. You have no coherent arguments. The fact anyone is still pushing this Ukraine crap after the transcript is pathetic. Bring out 20,000 whistleblowers it changes nothing - the transcript is the truth, every additional whistleblower just shows how much a coup your side is trying to run.

I would think eventually you guys would get the hint. I keep thinking that, but you just get more and more unhinged.
