With Russian and Iranian help, Assad has reclaimed control of most of the country from an array of rebel factions, some that were backed by foreign governments, and jihadist militants.

Apparently there is a sliver of hope for a sovereign Syria after nearly a decade of civil war, gas attacks by proxy, and hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths. Luckily he isn't an enemy of the people thus survived the near decade of turmoil, so far.

Still under attack, he can't waive the draft but will pardon those who report within 3-6 months. He also reduces the death penalty to life sentence of hard labor.

Over here most people seem to prefer die than do hard labor, but over there maybe its still different?

Will US give up and take on Iran instead??

The Assyrians were what is now Iraq minus Al-Anbar province which is the western half of the country. Thats where the Syrian like arabs live.

An Assyrian could be an Iranian too.

the 'Assyrian' ~ ~ would include any of the peoples which were included within the Seleucid Empire

see:

RE; wiki

Shrinkage continues

Antiochus IV Epiphanes (reigned 187-164 BCE) is famous for trying to impose the Greeks’ pagan religion on the Jews in Judaea, thus provoking them into rebellion. This led eventually to the setting up of an independent Jewish state centred on Jerusalem. This state would have an ambiguous relationship with the rest of the Hellenistic world; its ruling class was deeply influenced by Greek thought and culture, but strict Jews, who were numerous and influential, abhorred the pagan beliefs and practices of the Greeks.
Antiochus died on a campaign against the Parthians, who were raiding his eastern territories. This was a failure, and from the 140s the Parthians started expanding rapidly. They had soon conquered all the eastern satrapies of the Seleucid empire and in 141 BCE the eastern capital of Seleucia fell to them. Succeeding Seleucid kings attempted to restore their power in the East, but all failed: Demetrius II was taken captive by the Parthians (139) and Antiochus VII was killed in an ambush (129). '''
So ended all Seleucid ambitions in that region; the Seleucid kingdom was henceforth confined to Syria,
with Antioch as its single capital.

Assad is not from the Shia nor Sunni branches of Islam

I do not think Assad fits the role of the 'despicable' beast of end-times...the Above Antiochus is a fair precursor as to the traits of the one-eyed AC Beast person-of-AC

Good on Assad, Perhaps now the country can get back to normality and those who fled in their hundreds of thousands can go back home. Assad was never their enemy.

It just goes to show really.

We in the West have been told Al-Assad is a monster. An evil man who gasses his own people and wages war on them, while we support the "moderate opposition".

The Moderate Opposition, it turned out, were Al-Qaeda extremists, who would have Syria sent back into the dark ages. In the territory of the "moderate opposition" one could find such wonderful things such as homosexuals stoned to death, women and minorities enslaved and sold, openly, in the streets. Children as young as 4 beheaded for "crimes against Islam" and a whole host of atrocities that would be abhorrent in the 5th Century AD let alone in the 21st Century

Syria under Al-Assad is (or was, before the war) a modern state with many liberties that are simply not a fact of life elsewhere in the region. Such things as a secular state, full and universal rights and equalities for women, the protection of minority religious & ethnic groups and other things that are an Anathema to the Saudi-backed system of government. You can even drink alcohol, smoke, listen to music and other things that simply would not be possible for the people of Syria if we had our way.

What actually happened when the West incited war using extremists and foreign mercenaries against Syria and her Government? The people rallied in support for their President Bashar Al-Assad. In spite of overwhelming odds Syria and her people have emerged victorious.

Good on them I say. I have always been against the West's baseless war in Syria, and have always supported Syria and her rightful President. I hope soon the war will finally be formally over and Syria can rebuild her country and return to normality.

No doubt US is 'done' wasting white helmet gassing ops on Assad;

will likely just go the bioweapon or nuclear route when targetting the greater area especially Turkey & of course Iran.

Lets be honest, this is the same reason Bush I left Saddam in charge.

It would have been a bigger mess than Iraq (As Bush II and the neocons discovered) and any group we propped up would have been immediately de-legitimized after his death leaving us with Afghanistan at best or at worst a total Iranian proxy

But what happens now? Recent headlines claim that Turkey is prepared to engage in direct battle with Syrian troops in Northern Syria...

That's deeply unfair to the Syrian people that fought tooth and nail to hang onto their country, yea Iran and Russia took some pressure off but if the Syrian people had not fought so hard there would have been no one to help.
