I don't disagree, but as Madmac says, we also have to get rid of the career politicians and enact term limits (of some kind).
The other thing is, we have to ask how something as you propose would come into being. Would there be a law passed which prohibited the two party
system, or would it just be a gentleman's agreement? And, what would stop a two party system from forming again immediately after this law? What
would be the penalty for its membership? What a draconian thought that is, right?
This is the great evil of the current two party system; it is nearly impossible to undo. But there is one way, and Donald Trump showed us what that
way is...IF people would just drop their axes long enough to step back for a second and look at it.
The way you get rid of a two party system is to dilute it into irrelevance. Trump was an outsider, neither democrat nor republican...or both. He
pinned the republican moniker on to get elected president because he knew (wisely) that he HAD to pick either red or blue. He realized blue was
corrupt and, well, Hillary. So, red it was. Trump, like Perrot, would never win as an independent 3rd party candidate, and he knew this. And, it's
true; it is mathematically impossible for a 3rd party candidate to win. And we all saw what happened. And, even more importantly, we saw proof in
what happened as we watched both democrats AND republicans attack him. He was an outsider, a Charlton, and he must GO!
It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out the two party system is hopelessly broken. Just look at the current democratic field of candidates for
2020 to see why. Every single one of them is so wildly different than the next that they don't represent any notion of unity as a "party". Their
ideas are too radically different from one another. How can you pick one of them and say the "democrats" won??? You can't.
The truth is, with the democrats right now, you've got about four different political parties running on the blue ticket, and not one of them is truly
a democrat (if one could even be defined anymore). You've got communists, socialists, independents and environmentalists (among others). Only the
environmentalists and/or possibly Biden align somewhat with democratic ideology. These are all 3rd parties who have branded themselves "democrat".
Why? Because they too realize you have to pick either red or blue to win.
So back to the question; how do you get rid of the two party system? Well, it seems to me you have to start a grass-roots upswelling of people who
openly cast aside the two party mantra as having been diluted into irrelevance. And to do this, you must force both parties to define exactly what
being in their party means. Then you have to kick out anyone who doesn't align with that ideology which will cause all hell to break loose
UNTIL...the low information folks finally understand what's going on. This will begin to fracture the two party system. And, the more fractured it
becomes the less relevant it becomes.
